Vancouver’s Annual Latin American Heritage Month Returns

Latincouver is proud to announce the fifth annual Latin American Heritage Month Festival, October 6 to November 2. This year’s vibrant lineup of cultural events includes 4 exhibitions, 167 artists, 38 shows, 17 events, and 5 workshops, plus, a show-stopping performance by Grammy Award-winning Colombian rock band, Aterciopelados. 

In 2018, the Parliament of Canada proclaimed October to be Latin American Heritage Month in Canada in recognition of the Latin American community’s tremendous contribution to Canadian society. This year’s 28-day celebration invites visitors of all ages to honour and experience the dynamic cultures, cuisine, music, art, and dance that comprise this rich heritage.

Festival highlights include:

  • Oct 6: Opening Ceremony – Brazilian Night: Let the festivities begin! This colourful community kickoff event features live performances by Brazilian musicians and dancers, plus traditional Brazilian cuisine sold by local food vendors. Registration is free.
  • Oct 10 – 24: Art & Exhibition ft. Ángeles Agrela: Admire the recent works of Spanish Artist, Ángeles Agrela at the Centre of Contemporary Art during this 14-day art exhibition. Her art famously uses hair to reconceptualize the role of women within the history of art. Centre of Contemporary Art, Vancouver. Registration is free.
     
  • Oct 13: Aterciopelados in Concert: Grammy Award-winning musical duo, Aterciopelados take the stage with a fusion of rock and Latin American sounds. This iconic Colombian band will perform over two decades of hits with legendary musicians such as Macaco, León Larregui (vocals for the Mexican group Zoé), Goyo (Chocquibtown) and Catalina García (Monsieur Periné).   • Oct 15: Kids Connecting our Roots Workshop: Artist Carmen Keitsch will lead this workshop to teach children how to craft their own papel picado (traditional Mexican folk art) using a unique paper-cutting technique. Kids will display their works of art at the fest’s altar of the dead. Registration is free.
     
  • Oct 18: How to Make Your Own Ceviche Peruano Online Workshop: Learn the secrets to mastering Peruvian Ceviche during this interactive culinary workshop hosted on Zoom by Private Chef, Cecilia Torres. Registration is free.
  • Oct 19: Mesoamerican Pottery Workshop: Explore the history of clay and its vital role in pre-Columbian civilizations during this fascinating workshop where participants can design, create, and decorate a ceramic piece of their own. Tickets are $35
     
  • Oct 28 – 29: Latin Market ft. Day of the Dead: Don your best catrin or catrina costume and enjoy the sights, sounds, and tastes of Latin America during this two-day family-friendly exhibition that features over 30 vendors, a marketplace, and live music. Registration is free.
     
  • Nov 1: Todos Los Santos, Guatemalan Barrilete Exhibition: Join the Consulate of Guatemala in observing the traditions of Todos los Santos (Day of the Dead) with a ceremony that features traditional barrilete (kites) that help to honour the dearly departed. Live music, Guatemalan cuisine and cash bar available. Registration is free
