Groundbreaking Roles and the Largest Global Cast in Goh Ballet’s 13th Nutcracker Season

Prepare to embark on a magical journey like never before as Goh Ballet proudly stages its 13th annual production of The Nutcracker, presented by RBC. The cherished holiday tradition returns to Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre from December 14 to 17, for three evening performances and two matinees each accompanied by the Vancouver Opera Orchestra.

But even Vancouver’s most anticipated Nutcracker production – which this year features 312
dancers in roles ranging from ballerinas to gymnasts, magicians, and more – has a few new
tricks up its sleeve. The city’s only professional Nutcracker to cast performers of all ages, from
mice aged 6 to ballroom dancers aged 73, is diversifying yet again: the 2023 show is set to
feature the ballet’s largest international cast to date.

Visiting principal dancers from renowned companies worldwide – including Stephanie Chen
Gundorph and Sebastian Pico Haynes of the Royal Danish Ballet, dancers from the
National Ballet of China, and Cecilia Iliesiu and Dammiel Cruz-Garrido of the Pacific
Northwest Ballet – will be joined by dancers from 11 countries (including the UK, Australia,
Brazil, Japan and Georgia). It’s a milestone for Vancouver’s iconic Nutcracker production, and
for the international ballet community as a whole.

Taking the Queen Elizabeth stage alongside the world’s prima ballerinas are seasoned dancers
from overseas and local ballet hopefuls. Many, like this year’s 18-year-old Nutcracker Prince
Vitor Moreira from Brazil, train here in Vancouver and relish stepping into a role next to their global ballet idols. Goh Ballet’s Nutcracker breaks down those barriers – allowing young
dancers to share the stage and enable mentorship opportunities with international stars.

  1. At the age of 82 I have seen innumerable productions of the Nutcracker, not only here in Canada but outside as well. The GOH production truly excelled, and it was so great to see such super great dancers like Sebastian Pico Haynes, from the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen…
