SUMMARY:An Afternoon as an Ecologist
DESCRIPTION:Step into the shoes of an ecologist and explore the urban forest up close. This hands-on workshop in Mundy Park gives you the opportunity to experience how ecologists study forest ecosystems. Using real field tools like DBH tapes and plant guides\, you’ll measure trees\, shrubs\, and understorey plants\, and get a closer look at the structure and diversity of the forest. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of forest ecology and the methods scientists use to monitor and study natural environments. \nAbout the Instructor\nPriya is the Forest Conservation Program Coordinator at Raincoast Conservation Foundation. She completed her Master of Science in Forestry at UBC in 2024\, where she specialized in forest pathology and tree breeding. Priya also completed her Bachelor of Science Honours in 2020\, also at UBC Forestry\, where she focused on plant/forest physiology\, genomics\, and ecology. Priya studied the decline of native Arbutus menziesii – a unique tree species characteristic of Coastal Douglas-fir ecosystems. \nAbout Raincoast Conservation Foundation\nRaincoast is a team of scientists and conservationists empowered by research to safeguard the land\, waters\, and wildlife of coastal British Columbia. The organization investigates coastal species and ecological processes to deepen understanding\, informs decision-makers and communities by translating science into action\, and inspires efforts to protect wildlife and wildlife habitats. \nRegister here. \nWHAT:\n• Hands-on experience using real field tools to measure trees\, shrubs\, and understorey plants.\n• Explore forest structure and diversity in an urban forest setting.\n• Gain a deeper understanding of forest ecology and how ecologists study ecosystems.\n• Registration cost includes an entry pass for the Fraser River Discovery Centre. \nWHO: This workshop is intended for participants 16 years of age and older. \nWHEN: March 28th\, 2:00pm – 4:00pm \nWHERE: Mundy Park \nCOST: Pre-registration is required.\n– Early Bird (until Feb 28th) – $18\n– Regular (starting Mar 1st) – $20\n– Student (Student ID Required)\, Senior (65 and older)\, or Member – $18 \n\n\n	Related
