Has it been awhile since you’ve been up to Whistler? Or are you amongst the ranks of locals and tourists who come from all over the world to ski or snowboard down those renowned slopes season after season? Whistler regular or not, there is always a new experience awaiting atop the scenic 1.5 hour drive from Vancouver.
For this #DLdaytrip, we booked ourselves in for a full Saturday itinerary, starting with SuperFly Ziplines. As first timers, the cold weather and thoughts of flying through the air at 100 km/hr on the highest zipline in North America was a little nerve-wracking, but our expert guides were quick to put us at ease with clear instructions and buckets of energy and info on hand. And it was every bit as incredible as it looks. (Need to know: $129/pp, weight restriction 60-250 lbs, approx 3 hours from check-in to return.)
Here’s a short video of our bird’s eye view experience:
After an exhilarating morning, it was time to refuel for lunch. While we always love the mainstays in the village, we took a reco from local staff for something just off the beaten path enough to not deal with lineups. Gone Eatery has a simple, fresh local menu (burgers, soups, salads) and plenty of casual seating tucked into the Rainbow Building (yes, they’re licenced.)
After lunch, we headed to Moguls Coffee House for coffee, nestled right along the Village stroll. They are known for their giant cookies, but we managed to resist and stick to our flat whites.
Then, onto the newest attraction in the Village: the freshly (one-week-old) unveiled Audain Art Museum. Designed by internationally-acclaimed Patkau Architects, the Audain Art Museum was created to house the BC art collection owned by Vancouver developer and philanthropist Michael Audain. The 56,000 square foot gallery features an outstanding permanent boutique collection of historical and contemporary Northwest Coast art, complemented with changing world-class temporary exhibitions.
Fast forward through some end-of-season deal hunting and drooling over the overwhelmingly amazing display of baked delectables at Purebread, and it was time to head back down the Sea to Sky as afternoon daylight began to wane.
And on the way down? Mag’s 99 has become a bit of a must-do when passing through or heading to Squamish. Taking over a former Taco Bell space along the freeway, it appears the operators kept virtually all of the bones of the former tenants intact, and focused their attention towards decking out the insides with funky Mexican-inspired art and other fun ornamental accoutrements. You’ll also find their walls lined with accolades from the Squamish Chief for best chicken, best fast food and best meal under $10.
There’s never enough time to do it all. Leaving you this list of other places we wish we’d had time for:
- Araxi Restaurant + Bar – their après menu sounds amazing – charcuterie, fondue, oysters.
- Camp Lifestyle & Coffee Co – brand new shop that combines our favourite things.
- Peaked Pies – traditional Aussie pies.
- The Mexican Corner – authentic tacos, quesadillas, margaritas.
- Splitz Grill – this is the original one.
- Zog’s – poutine is just one of those post-mountain musts.
- Scandinave Spa Whistler – this is a whole other trip.
Already looking forward to our next #DLdaytrip. Be sure to follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook for more local goodness.
