Vancouver Arts Festival for self-identified “Outsiders”

On Oct. 11–13, 2024, the 8th annual Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival (VOAF) will return to the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre, presented by the Community Arts Council of Vancouver (CACV).

This unique festival features visual and performing artists from all over Metro Vancouver who self-identify as “outsiders”—those who often face physical, social, or economic barriers to showing their work in mainstream spaces or came to art via non-traditional means.

A new curatorial committee made up of VOAF alumni and respected community members chose this year’s 56 artists, fostering a robust and supportive network of outsider artists.

Some highlights this year include:

  • The exhibition Gift of Madness, curated by Kagan Goh, highlights how creative expressions of madness contribute to both personal healing and the healing of others, celebrating the power of art.
  • Poems from the Kitchen, a workshop presented by BC Culture Days, blends food and storytelling from different cultures via cooking demonstrations, spoken word presentations, and artist dialogues.
  • Workshops where participants can try their hand at sketching and cyanotypes, and participate in a photo walk.
