So many pies, so little time. Lucky for us, we get to pay tribute to this classic flaky favourite twice a year (National Pie Day is January 23, Pi Day is March 14.) Sweet, savoury, flaky, fluffy, double baked, cream-filled, old-fashioned; with so many variations available, it would be unfortunate for one to have only ever known apple or pumpkin pie. Here’s our top 10 pie shops in Vancouver to branch out and try a different slice; so the next time you’re called upon to bring a pie for dessert, you’re not just scrambling to the local supermarket or Costco. PS. Happy Pi(e) Day! Leave a comment if you know of other Pi Day specials happening this week.

Peaked Pies

Nothing like a hot and steamy Aussie pie. Don’t let their diminutive 5-inch size deceive you; these are stuffed with hearty goodness. Most popular: Traditional Aussie and Steak, Bacon & Cheese. Feeling wild? Go for the Hopper, made with ground free-range kangaroo meat. Yes, for reals. (from $6.95/pie)

Aphrodite’s Organic Cafe & Pie Shop
3605 W 4th Ave, Vancouver, BC | @aphroditesorganiccafe
These organic pies are so good, Ryan Reynolds smuggles them down to the States. They have savoury and sweet options, but we’re happiest with their tried and true classic apple. ($8/slice or $35/pie)
Savary Island Pie Company
533 Marine Drive, West Vancouver, BC | @savaryislandpiecompany
A West Van institution since 1989, this rustic shop has perfected a superb flaky crust. The raspberry pie is a hot seller ($32), but we rarely leave without a serving of warm tourtière or chicken pot pie.
Black Rook Bakehouse
2474 E Hastings, Vancouver, BC | @blackrookbakehouse
These pies (and other baked goods while you’re at it) are a staple over in Hastings-Sunrise. Heavenly cakes with farmhouse feel, like they came straight from your grandmother’s everything-from-scratch kitchen. Don’t leave without an old-fashioned apple cinnamon or coconut cream pie. (from $4.50/slice)
Sweet and Savoury Pie
2261 East Hastings Street | @sweetandsavourypie
Shepherds, Mac & Cheese, Steak & Guinness, Curried Lamb, Pumpkin, Chocolate Pecan, Rhubarb – the list goes on. A diverse menu that appeals to all palates, just like their name promises. Love the 3-inch tiny pie option for just a taste. (from $4.50)
Tartine Bread & Pies
770 Beach Ave, Vancouver, BC | @tartinebreadandpies
Their current spring menu is chock-full of fresh flavours: Shoo-Fly Pie, Lavender Raspberry, Banana Cream, Salted Caramel Apple, and on and on. Perfect for a sunny day seawall date.
Lime & Moon Pie Company
1066 Mainland, Vancouver, BC | Bowen Island | @limeandmoonpieco
Lots of enticing options at this organic, small-batch bakeshop. Insider favourites: Peach Raspberry Pie and Strawberry-Rhubarb Fields Forever. Their savoury pies make for a nice picnic meal or on-the-go lunch, especially from their cute Bowen Island shop along the pier, open seasonally.
