SUMMARY:A Doll's House
DESCRIPTION:A seemingly perfect life unravels as Nora\, a charming wife and mother\, grapples with a shocking secret. Hidden debts and societal expectations force her to confront a harsh truth—she’s been living in a carefully crafted dollhouse\, yearning for freedom. In a daring move that shakes the very foundation of her world\, Nora makes a choice that will change everything. \nUpon its debut in 1879\, Ibsen’s play quickly generated both acclaim and controversy as one of the first dramatic works to meaningfully address several taboo subjects. Nearly 150 years later\, acclaimed playwright Amy Herzog brings relevance to a story that astonished audiences and brought forth a new era of theatre with a thrilling and compact contemporary adaptation.

SUMMARY:Chan Centre Presents: Carminho
DESCRIPTION:Portuguese singer recognized as a standout voice in contemporary and traditional fado\, blending Brazilian bossa nova and pop. \nCarminho was born to sing. The daughter of the renowned fado singer Teresa Siqueira\, listened to her mother while she was still in her pregnant belly. Though Carminho tried to avoid her destiny as a singer\, initially pursuing a career in marketing\, she ultimately embraced her calling and chose music as her life’s work. \nSix albums and one EP later\, Carminho has become one of this generation’s greatest fado singers. Singing in both traditional and contemporary styles\, she is leading a revival of the centuries-old genre at home in her native Portugal and beyond\, sharing this deeply affecting music with the world. In 2023\, she appeared in a pivotal scene in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-nominated film Poor Things\, singing “O Quarto (Fado Menor)\,” captivating Emma Stone’s character and audiences everywhere\, and garnering her a Golden Globe nomination. That same year\, she performed for Pope Francis at World Youth Day\, singing live before a crowd of 1.5 million\, and received her first Latin Grammy nomination for her critically acclaimed album\, Portuguesa. In 2024\, she released her first EP\, Carminho at Electrical Audio\, recorded in collaboration with renowned producer Steve Albini in Chicago\, shortly before his untimely passing. Carminho is currently working on her new album\, scheduled for release this fall. \nCarminho’s singing is breathtaking to witness and her music is full of raw power\, haunting beauty\, and longing. Join us for a soul-stirring night\, exploring the depths of joy and melancholy in Carminho’s fado house.
