SUMMARY:Vitality: Iconic Images\, Hidden Stories
DESCRIPTION:Step into the streets of Vancouver’s Chinatown through the lens of Fred Herzog. A new exhibit reopening the Chinatown Storytelling Center\, Vitality brings together a striking selection of Herzog’s photographs\, capturing daily life in Chinatown\, Strathcona\, and along historic Hastings St. from the 1950s to 1970s. Scan QR codes throughout the exhibition to hear firsthand reflections that bring these moments to life. \nBlending photography with storytelling\, Vitality uncovers the hidden stories behind Herzog’s iconic images\, offering a richer\, more nuanced view of these historic neighbourhoods. By capturing the vitality\, creativity\, and resilience of the community during its heyday\, this exhibition serves as a powerful reminder of what these neighbourhoods once were—and what they can become again. \nVitality\, the companion publication to the exhibition\, is a striking\, full-colour book featuring Fred Herzog’s iconic photographs of Chinatown and its surrounding neighbourhoods from the 1950s\, ’60s\, and ’70s is available for purchase at Foo Hung Curios.

SUMMARY:Restless by Nature: Mary Sui Yee Wong\, 1990s to the present
DESCRIPTION:Richmond Art Gallery presents Restless by Nature\, the first retrospective of multidisciplinary artist Mary Sui Yee Wong’s work\, on view from April 12 to June 8\, 2025. Wong’s artistic practice over three decades spans sculpture\, installation\, photography\, video\, and costume\, and works in this exhibition have been specially updated for this new context–reflecting the site-specificity that Wong is known for. A newly commissioned performance-based work\, Gold Mountain\, draws from the rising levels of anti-Asian violence seen in recent years\, and will use an act of destruction to explore systemic racism as driven by the neoliberal economy. Born in Hong Kong to Cantonese opera master Toa Wong and raised in Vancouver\, the artist frequently addresses themes of personal memory\, familial legacy\, and cultural history in her work. Based in Montréal\, Wong is a professor in Concordia University’s Fine Arts department\, an advocate for the Chinese Canadian community\, and a celebrated mentor of younger generations of Asian diaspora artists. A collaboration between the Gallery\, City of Richmond Public Art\, and Capture Photography Festival\, her work TREASURE II\, which honours her Chinese cultural and artistic heritage\, will be featured at Lansdowne Station. \nThis exhibition is part of the 2025 Capture Photography Festival Selected Exhibition Program. \nAdmission to the Richmond Art Gallery is free. Donations are appreciated.

SUMMARY:Pacific Theatre Presents: Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Co-Dependents and Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous. In an empty church activity room\, five people share their stories and try to connect in the face of stigma\, intersecting trauma\, and wildly disparate experiences. When a participant expresses an unanticipated desire\, the group must evaluate the limits of their tolerance\, trust\, and acceptance. \nThe audience joins the Meeting in real time\, staged in the Chalmers activity room at Pacific Theatre. \nThis up-close exploration of community care surprises at every turn\, revealing vulnerable people grasping for meaning in their lives and relationships. Is restorative justice possible? \nEvery performance includes a Talk Forward discussion with a facilitator and invited guest speaker. \nAudience Advisory: This production contains explicit discussions about sex\, sexual behaviour\, childhood sexual abuse and trauma\, and pedophilia. It is recommended for ages 19+. \nContact info@pacifictheatre.org for more detailed content guidance.
