DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents the Canadian premiere of ANTI-ICON: APOKALYPSIS\, Martine Gutierrez’s first major solo show in Canada. The exhibition features 17 self-portraits in which Gutierrez transforms herself into a pantheon of influential heroines who have become legendary through depictions in art history\, pop culture\, and religion. Her exquisite transformations into Ardhanarishvara\, Cleopatra\, the Virgin Mary\, and Joan of Arc among others\, are photographed with the style and glamour of luxury fashion magazines. Using simple sets and minimal props\, Gutierrez subverts class\, gender\, celebrity\, and other notions that give images “iconic” status. Originally commissioned by Public Art Fund in 2021 and circulated on bus shelters in New York\, Chicago\, and Boston\, the series was last on view in three separate parts across New York\, San Francisco\, and London galleries in 2023. Metropolis at Metrotown has upped the ante for Fall Fun with exciting\, new activities for the season! \nFrom September 16 til October 31\, Metropolis at Metrotown will feature a plethora of fun activities for all ages to enjoy\, including a partnership with Tourism Burnaby to amplify the spooky spirit. The partnership sees the Burnaby Halloween Festival’s return to the Met fall experience\, with an exciting haunted house escape room\, pie eating contest\, and pumpkin carving show\, along with other Fall Fun at the Met activities. \nThroughout the month of October\, Ghost Hunt: Hauntington Manor\, an escape room produced by Bamboozled Escape Games\, invites groups of two to eight players to enter a dimly lit mansion\, armed with a ghostbustin’ laser\, to solve puzzles and complete action-based tasks to save the manor’s lost souls. This 25-minute experience is designed for adults and while there is no gore\, the startling and spooky atmosphere requires that children 7 to 12 must be accompanied by an adult (ages 19+); youth ages 13 and older can participate on their own. Reservations can be booked online at www.bamboozledeg.ca/ghost-hunt. \nAttend a pumpkin-carving palooza on October 12 from 11am – 5pm. Witness a parade of expertly carved jack-o-lanterns by master pumpkin carver Michael Valeroso in the Grand Court – a perfect backdrop for Halloween photos. \nOn October 19\, don your stretchy pants and head over to the Met’s Grand Court for a good old-fashioned pie-eating contest. The Pie Hole will host a pop-up shop from 11am-3pm (or until pies sell out) with pie-eating contests at 1pm and 2pm. Two contests will determine who can scarf down the most pies\, with the winners earning a $300 Metropolis at Metrotown gift card. \nGlam up for Halloween. Guests are encouraged to bring their own gear; however\, skates and protective gear will be available to rent.

This documentary profiles a hopeful and uplifting movement of farmers using alternative “regenerative” models of agriculture that could balance the climate and save our health\, in the face of a dark web of money\, power\, and politics behind our broken food system. \nGrab your blanket\, chair and a warm tea because we are turning our gardens into an open-air theatre\, a cozy atmosphere with twinkling lights and the sounds of nature!* Popcorn and beverages will be available for purchase (this is an alcohol-free event.) Free-range geese may make a guest appearance! \n*in the event of bad weather we will be hosting the showing in our heated indoor art gallery \nWe invite you to arrive at 6:30pm to give yourself time to wander the gardens\, grab a drink and save a good spot.
