DESCRIPTION:On June 29th\, the Chinatown Storytelling Centre will open “Our Journey Continues: 100 Years After the Chinese Immigration Act”\, a new special exhibit dedicated to honouring the multigenerational families who pursued their dreams and turned grievances into success. \nThe exhibit shares the lesser-known stories of families with ancestors who lived through the period of exclusion (1923-1947) and the living descendants making their mark in diverse professions. In selecting the stories\, the CSC spotlights ordinary people who are making an important impact in our community today\, including teachers\, doctors\, athletes\, artists\, and community organizers. The majority of the families have a connection to Vancouver’s Chinatown\, the vibrant intersection point of their extraordinary stories reflecting diverse occupations and backgrounds.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Café Daughter\, followed by a conversation with director Shelley Niro and a special guest. \nAbout the Film \nTrailblazing Kanien’kehaka (Mohawk) filmmaker and artist Shelley Niro (The Incredible 25th Year of Mitzi Bearclaw)\, whose international retrospective exhibition Shelley Niro: 500 Year Itch is currently touring\, directed and co-produced the film\, which she adapted from Kenneth T. Williams’ play of the same name. \nCafé Daughter features an all-star cast\, including Violah Beauvais (Beans)\, Star Slade (Diggstown)\, Tom Lim (Ditched)\, Sera-Lys McArthur (Broken Angel)\, and Billy Merasty (Frontier)\, as a family facing extreme obstacles with love and strength. \nFrom the Director’s Statement \n“Café Daughter is an inspiring story of an Indigenous Chinese girl who succeeds against all the unfair obstacles in front of her\, in a world that doesn’t see her power. This is a story that is not often told and one that we don’t see enough on screen. It comes from a time in Canada when people from minority groups were seen as inferior\, and when segregation and hate crimes were rampant. \nThe story of survival and what a mother does to protect her children is close to my heart. The issues that were depicted still happen in today’s world. Racism and exclusion are a part of Canadian society.” \nStory (Synopsis) \nCafé Daughter follows Yvette Wong\, a young Chinese-Cree girl determined to find her place in a small Saskatchewan community in the 1960s. In an effort to protect her children from discrimination\, Yvette’s mother Katherine\, a residential school survivor\, has charged her with a secret—to never reveal that she is part Cree. DESCRIPTION:The Firehall is pleased to present Fujiwara Dance Inventions’ Eunoia from Wednesday\, May 8 to Saturday\, May 11\, 2024. \nEunoia is a dance-theatre production and adaptation of Christian Bök’s award-winning book of poetry of the same name. It is a conceptual book written in the form of a lipogram where each of its five chapters is constrained to the use of one vowel. It is much lauded as a work\, won the 2002 Griffin Poetry Prize\, and became a bestseller in Canada and the UK. \nEunoia means ‘beautiful thinking’ and is the shortest word in the English language to contain all five vowels. In the book\, the author imposed the severe constraint of working with only one vowel in each chapter. Remarkably\, and despite the severe limitations to the usable vocabulary\, Bök was able to create oddly narrative poems with characters\, scenes\, and coherent action. \n“The choreography has imposed constraints as well\,” says Fujiwara. “For example\, in Chapter E\, we use the neck\, spleen\, knees\, etc. Rather than limit the choreography\, we’ve found that these constraints have allowed us to create a delightful parallel world that is separate and yet\, still relates to the poem in odd and unexpected ways.” \nThroughout the production\, poetry is used as text – spoken live\, as a kind of score for the dance\, in multimedia expressions and as the basis for movement invention. The work is rigorous\, surprising\, and frequently droll.
