SUMMARY:Our Journey Continues: 100 Years After the Chinese Immigration Act
DESCRIPTION:On June 29th\, the Chinatown Storytelling Centre will open “Our Journey Continues: 100 Years After the Chinese Immigration Act”\, a new special exhibit dedicated to honouring the multigenerational families who pursued their dreams and turned grievances into success. \nThe exhibit shares the lesser-known stories of families with ancestors who lived through the period of exclusion (1923-1947) and the living descendants making their mark in diverse professions. In selecting the stories\, the CSC spotlights ordinary people who are making an important impact in our community today\, including teachers\, doctors\, athletes\, artists\, and community organizers. The majority of the families have a connection to Vancouver’s Chinatown\, the vibrant intersection point of their extraordinary stories reflecting diverse occupations and backgrounds.

SUMMARY:From Slander’s Brand
DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents From Slander’s Brand from Nov. 10\, 2023–Feb. 4\, 2024\, an exhibition bringing together three monumental works by Hannah Darabi\, Rachel Khedoori\, and Ron Terada. In response to transformational historical periods — the 1979 Iranian Revolution\, the Iraq War of 2003\, and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic — each artist asks how art acts as a witness\, interlocutor\, and critical reflector on pivotal moments of historical trauma and transformation. The artworks employ language found in books\, newspapers\, and websites to create a new kind of “picture” of each of these momentous periods. \nAdmission is by donation\, courtesy of BMO Financial Group. \nPhoto credit: Ron Terada\, TL;DR\, 2020–2022. Installation view: WE DID THIS TO OURSELVES\, The Power Plant\, Toronto\, 2023. Photo: Toni Hafkenscheid. Courtesy the artist and Catriona Jeffries\, Vancouver.

SUMMARY:Returns: Nellie Gossen
DESCRIPTION:The Dance Centre presents interdisciplinary artist Nellie Gossen’s Returns\, an imaginative convergence of dance\, labour and garment fabrication: an innovative installation performance\, and a month-long artistic enquiry into the standard 30-day retail return policy. \nGarments are purchased and brought to the studio where they are carefully disassembled\, and reimagined into new forms. Gossen works alongside dance artist Erika Mitsuhashi\, clothing artist Jaewoo Kang and visual artist tone puorro to construct an ever-shifting landscape of garment constellations\, sculptural configurations\, and unfolding movement scores. At the end of the 30-day period\, all garments are meticulously reconstructed back into their original forms and returned to stores for a full refund. \nJanuary 7-February 3\, 2024: visit The Dance Centre website for the full schedule of dates and times.\nAdmission is free\, drop in and stay as long as you wish. \nPresented with PuSh International Performing Arts Festival.
