DESCRIPTION:On June 29th\, the Chinatown Storytelling Centre will open “Our Journey Continues: 100 Years After the Chinese Immigration Act”\, a new special exhibit dedicated to honouring the multigenerational families who pursued their dreams and turned grievances into success. \nThe exhibit shares the lesser-known stories of families with ancestors who lived through the period of exclusion (1923-1947) and the living descendants making their mark in diverse professions. In selecting the stories\, the CSC spotlights ordinary people who are making an important impact in our community today\, including teachers\, doctors\, athletes\, artists\, and community organizers. The majority of the families have a connection to Vancouver’s Chinatown\, the vibrant intersection point of their extraordinary stories reflecting diverse occupations and backgrounds.

DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents From Slander’s Brand from Nov. 10\, 2023–Feb. 4\, 2024\, an exhibition bringing together three monumental works by Hannah Darabi\, Rachel Khedoori\, and Ron Terada. In response to transformational historical periods — the 1979 Iranian Revolution\, the Iraq War of 2003\, and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic — each artist asks how art acts as a witness\, interlocutor\, and critical reflector on pivotal moments of historical trauma and transformation. Skip the line to see your favourite Santa by booking ahead on the Metropolis at Metrotown website. Partial proceeds from all Santa photos will be donated to the Burnaby Christmas Bureau\, which supports families and individuals in need within the Burnaby community. \nVisitors of all ages can get into the spirit of giving at Metropolis at Metrotown through a range of activities and experiences\, including a toy drive in support of Burnaby Christmas Bureau hosted by the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society on December 9; charity gift wrapping while supporting Burnaby Neighbourhood House from Dec 1-24; and admiring bright\, festive décor throughout the mall while shopping for gifts for your loved ones at over 330 stores. \nThe shopping centre is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m.–9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m.–7 p.m. Special holiday hours apply November 24 (8am – 10pm); December 24 (10am – 6pm); December 26 (8am – 10pm); and December 31 (10am – 6pm). DESCRIPTION:After two successful editions\, #VIBFF2023 is back with a hybrid version (in-person and online) to amplify the voices of Afro-descendants in British Columbia. The third annual VIBFF\, created by the Fabienne Colas Foundation and co-presented by Global BC\, is thrilled to announce its official hybrid program and events lineup\, running December 1 – 4\, 2023. The In-Person screenings and events will take place at the VIFF Vancity Theatre and Studio Theatre. \nThe #VIBFF23 All Access Online Pass gives access to the entire ONLINE programming is $45 (+ tx/fees). All Access In-person Pass is $39 (+ tx/fees) IN-PERSON\, single tickets for films are available for $12\, and $20 for the Opening Night film. Passes & tickets can be purchased on the Festival’s website. \nSPECIAL EVENTS \nFabienne Colas Foundation’s BEING BLACK IN CANADA\nDecember 2 |Vancity Theatre | 5:00 pm – 11 pm \nPresented by NETFLIX\, in collaboration with the National Bank\, and supported by Telefilm Canada\, the Canada Council for the Arts and various partners. \nCanadian short films from the 35 filmmakers of the 2022 cohort\, will be presented at #VIBFF23. The FCF’s Being Black in Canada supported 35 Black Canadian Filmmakers\, 18 to 30 years old\, in Montreal\, Toronto\, Halifax\, Ottawa\, Calgary\, and Vancouver in the creation of their first documentary short films (8 to 10 minutes). The filmmakers received professional coaching for each stage of the audiovisual production process and then made a short documentary film under the tutelage of industry professionals.
