DESCRIPTION:On June 29th\, the Chinatown Storytelling Centre will open “Our Journey Continues: 100 Years After the Chinese Immigration Act”\, a new special exhibit dedicated to honouring the multigenerational families who pursued their dreams and turned grievances into success. \nThe exhibit shares the lesser-known stories of families with ancestors who lived through the period of exclusion (1923-1947) and the living descendants making their mark in diverse professions. In selecting the stories\, the CSC spotlights ordinary people who are making an important impact in our community today\, including teachers\, doctors\, athletes\, artists\, and community organizers. The majority of the families have a connection to Vancouver’s Chinatown\, the vibrant intersection point of their extraordinary stories reflecting diverse occupations and backgrounds.

DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents From Slander’s Brand from Nov. 10\, 2023–Feb. 4\, 2024\, an exhibition bringing together three monumental works by Hannah Darabi\, Rachel Khedoori\, and Ron Terada. In response to transformational historical periods — the 1979 Iranian Revolution\, the Iraq War of 2003\, and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic — each artist asks how art acts as a witness\, interlocutor\, and critical reflector on pivotal moments of historical trauma and transformation. Skip the line to see your favourite Santa by booking ahead on the Metropolis at Metrotown website. Partial proceeds from all Santa photos will be donated to the Burnaby Christmas Bureau\, which supports families and individuals in need within the Burnaby community. \nVisitors of all ages can get into the spirit of giving at Metropolis at Metrotown through a range of activities and experiences\, including a toy drive in support of Burnaby Christmas Bureau hosted by the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society on December 9; charity gift wrapping while supporting Burnaby Neighbourhood House from Dec 1-24; and admiring bright\, festive décor throughout the mall while shopping for gifts for your loved ones at over 330 stores. \nThe shopping centre is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m.–9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m.–7 p.m. Special holiday hours apply November 24 (8am – 10pm); December 24 (10am – 6pm); December 26 (8am – 10pm); and December 31 (10am – 6pm). DESCRIPTION:Pi Theatre\, as part of its Provocateurs Series\, is pleased to present Deafy from Friday\, November 24 to Sunday\, November 26\, 2023 at the VIFF Studio Theatre (1181 Seymour Street\, Vancouver). \nDeaf public speaker\, ‘Nathan Jesper’\, has arrived at his venue desperately late. As he launches into his speech\, he soon realizes that things are not what they seem. \nA new play by Deaf artist Chris Dodd\, Deafy skillfully combines ASL\, surtitles\, and the spoken word to weave together a tragicomedy that takes the audience on an unexpected journey of discovering what it really means to belong. \nChris Dodd is a Treaty 6 (Edmonton)-based award-winning Deaf actor\, playwright\, accessibility advocate\, and Governor General Innovation Award finalist. He is the founder and artistic director of SOUND OFF\, Canada’s national festival devoted to Deaf performance. Chris holds a degree from the University of Alberta’s Drama program and has been working within Edmonton’s theatre community\, and across Canada\, for over 25 years. \nDeafy recently toured Ontario and was presented as part of Highwire Series at Citadel Theatre’s 2022/23 season. The play was recently published by Playwrights Canada Press as part of the anthology\, “Interdependent Magic: Disability Performance in Canada”. In 2019\, Chris received the Guy Laliberté Prize for innovation and creative leadership by the Canada Council for the Arts.
