DESCRIPTION:On June 29th\, the Chinatown Storytelling Centre will open “Our Journey Continues: 100 Years After the Chinese Immigration Act”\, a new special exhibit dedicated to honouring the multigenerational families who pursued their dreams and turned grievances into success. \nThe exhibit shares the lesser-known stories of families with ancestors who lived through the period of exclusion (1923-1947) and the living descendants making their mark in diverse professions. In selecting the stories\, the CSC spotlights ordinary people who are making an important impact in our community today\, including teachers\, doctors\, athletes\, artists\, and community organizers. The majority of the families have a connection to Vancouver’s Chinatown\, the vibrant intersection point of their extraordinary stories reflecting diverse occupations and backgrounds.

DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents From Slander’s Brand from Nov. 10\, 2023–Feb. 4\, 2024\, an exhibition bringing together three monumental works by Hannah Darabi\, Rachel Khedoori\, and Ron Terada. In response to transformational historical periods — the 1979 Iranian Revolution\, the Iraq War of 2003\, and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic — each artist asks how art acts as a witness\, interlocutor\, and critical reflector on pivotal moments of historical trauma and transformation. DESCRIPTION:From November 13 – December 30\, Metropolis at Metrotown – B.C.’s largest shopping centre – welcomes locals and visitors alike to celebrate the holidays through a series of unique and diverse Santa experiences\, festive displays\, charitable initiatives and unparalleled shopping. \nStarting November 13th\, visitors to Metropolis at Metrotown can meet an assorted version of Santas throughout the mall\, including Father Christmas\, the classic Santa of children’s storybooks\, Global Santa\, who represents many versions of Christmas that exist among families\, Kris Kringle\, whose energy and charm is matched by a boundless enthusiasm for the holidays\, and even Tropical Santa who plans to pop by during his post-holiday travels between December 27 and 30. \nFor those who wish to take a memento from their time with one of Metropolis at Metrotown’s Santas\, photo sessions are available for all four on select dates with a variety of packages available (including print and digital options). Skip the line to see your favourite Santa by booking ahead on the Metropolis at Metrotown website. Festival fall displays will adorn the centre until October 31. \nFrom October 2-8\, follow @metropolisatmet on Instagram and share a snap of a fall display\, tag a friend\, and comment about your favourite fall happening at the centre. One lucky winner will receive a $100 gift card to use at select retailers. \nWatch a featured artist showcase their impressive pumpkin carving skills with a live demo on October 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Grand Court. \nVisit the Grand Court on October 21 to watch a live pie-eating contest sponsored by The Pie Hole\, one of the Lower Mainland’s best pie shops. The Pie Hole will also be hosting a pop-up\, where visitors can purchase fresh\, handmade pies to-go. \nVisitors of all ages can celebrate Halloween at Metropolis at Metrotown through a range of activities and experiences\, including a balloon twister and mascot on October 31 from 2–6 p.m.\, or go trick-or-treating at select retailers throughout the day. \nFall fun at Metropolis at Metrotown runs now through October 31\, 2023. The shopping centre is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m.–9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m.–7 p.m.

SUMMARY:Bannock Bake Sale
DESCRIPTION:Jillian\, founder of The Métis Bannock Queen\, grew up in Fort McMurray\, Treaty 8\, a First Nation territory in northwestern Canada. Till today\, she reminisces about eating her grandfather’s bannock straight out of the oven\, covered with jam\, butter and honey. \nWhen Jillian first moved to Vancouver eighteen years ago\, her mother gave her a recipe book. Inside it were notes and recipes handwritten by her grandfather. Amongst the pages was his personal recipe for bannock. While her grandfather passed away in 2019\, Jillian still uses his recipes to carry on that legacy. Today\, she experiments with a variety of flavour combinations\, with many seasonal options such as fresh berries in the summer and cinnamon and apples in the fall. \nJillian initially started making bannocks during the pandemic as a way of fundraising for the not-for-profits in the lower mainland. It was her way of giving back to the community and sharing a piece of her Métis culture through her grandfather’s legacy.
