SUMMARY:An Evening with Zadie Smith
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a captivating conversation with Zadie Smith\, one of the most prolific writers of her generation\, whose work has helped shape the literary landscape for over two decades. \nTwo of Smith’s novels\, White Teeth and NW\, have been named among the best books of the 21st century by the New York Times and Kirkus\, the former published when she was just 24. Her latest novel\, The Fraud\, was named Best Book of 2023 by both the New Yorker and Publishers Weekly\, while Dead and Alive\, her most recent collection of essays\, was included on TIME’s list of must-read books of 2025. Whether writing on class\, race\, culture\, art\, or politics\, Smith captivates readers around the world with her singular voice. \nSmith’s novels have won major awards including the Commonwealth Writers Prize\, Jewish Quarterly Wingate Prize\, and Orange Prize\, among others\, while her play The Wife of Willesden won a Critics’ Circle Theatre Award. She has been honoured with the Langston Hughes Medal\, the St. Louis Literary Award\, and the Bodley Medal. \nPraised for her “boisterous narrative intelligence; ear for dialogue; [and] chronic absence of boring sentences\,” (The Guardian) few writers are as consistently dazzling as Smith. Don’t miss this intimate evening with one of the most celebrated voices in contemporary literature.

SUMMARY:Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor: End Times Fascism and The Fight for the Living World
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an essential conversation with Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor as they discuss their forthcoming book\, END TIMES FASCISM – And the Fight for the Living World. \nAcross politics\, technology\, and culture\, a powerful narrative is taking hold: that ecological collapse\, social breakdown\, and mass instability are inevitable. Klein and Taylor examine how this fatalism is shaping a worldview in which elites prepare for survival while abandoning collective responsibility. From fortified enclaves to fantasies of off-world escape\, they trace how fear of the future is being harnessed to justify inequality\, exclusion\, and authoritarianism. \nBut this apocalyptic thinking\, despite tech-bro billionaire and Christian fundamentalist insistence\, can be rejected. Klein and Taylor offer a sharp and necessary framework for understanding this moment and how to fight it. With clarity and urgency\, they challenge us to deny the pervasive belief in impending doom\, defend human dignity\, and imagine futures rooted in collective care\, solidarity\, and hope that change is possible. \nNaomi Klein is an award-winning journalist\, bestselling author of Doppelganger\, No Logo\, and The Shock Doctrine. At the University of British Columbia\, she is founding Co-Director of the Centre for Climate Justice and Associate Professor in the Department of Geography. \nAstra Taylor is an award-winning writer\, activist\, and documentarian\, and a cofounder of the Debt Collective. She is the author of The People’s Platform\, which won the American Book Award; Democracy May Not Exist\, but We’ll Miss It When It’s Gone; and The Age of Insecurity. \nCo-presented with the UBC Centre for Climate Justice and Knopf Canada

SUMMARY:Eating Globally: Chinese Cuisine
DESCRIPTION:Authors Cheuk Kwan (Have you Eaten Yet?) and Linda Lau Anusasananan (The Hakka Cookbook: Chinese Soul Food from around the World) reunite to share tales of scouring the world for good eats – and just a taste of home – as they recount stories from the Amazon to the Arctic including Peru\, Malaysia\, Madagascar and Iceland. Kwan and Lau Anusasananan will be in conversation with comedian and actor Ali Hassan (Is There Bacon in Heaven?). His fifteen-part Chinese Restaurants (2005) documentary braids his personal experiences with his love of travel and appreciation for Chinese culture worldwide. Kwan’s personal memoir\, Have You Eaten Yet? (2002)\, draws out a global narrative of the Chinese diaspora by linking together personal stories of chefs\, entrepreneurs\, laborers and dreamers who populate Chinese kitchens world-wide. The book is the 2023 Gold Winner of Taste Canada Awards (Culinary Narrative). \nLinda Lau Anusasananan wrote The Hakka Cookbook: Chinese Soul Food from around the World (University of California Press\, 2012). The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards named it “Best Chinese Cuisine Cookbook of the World 2012.” The book weaves together history\, personal stories\, and recipes of the Hakka\, China’s “guest people.” For 34 years\, she served as a recipe editor and food writer at Sunset Magazine. She also presents Chinese cooking videos and recipes on the subscription site Grokker.com. \nAli Hassan is a stand-up comedian\, author and former chef. He is the host of Laugh Out Loud on CBC Radio\, as well as Canada Reads – CBC’s “battle of the books”. In 2023\, Ali began touring his latest one man show based on his decade in the food industry\, entitled Does This Taste Funny? His comedic memoir Is There Bacon in Heaven? was described by Rick Mercer as “perhaps the funniest and most heartfelt Canadian memoir yet.” \nJudy Lam Maxwell is a culinary-heritage tourism entrepreneur based in Vancouver. She is the owner of Historical Chinatown Tours which offers guided walking tours and traditional dumpling classes. Ms. Lam Maxwell\, who is of mixed Chinese European heritage and has a UBC Master’s degree in History\, also specializes in Chinatowns around the world. SUMMARY:Pauline Holdstock and Richard Kelly Kemick: Launch Party!
DESCRIPTION:Join Upstart & Crow for a night of readings and conversation with Pauline Holdstock\, author of WHAT ENDURES\, and Richard Kelly Kemick\, author of DECADENCE. \nThe stories in WHAT ENDURES range through and respond to a clickbait world evolving at terrifying speed\, revealing the absurd and ridiculous nature of everyday life. What does it mean to endure in a world starving for truth and connection\, what makes life worth living\, what can be discovered and preserved from the onrush of experience—vicarious and actual—that comes at us? \nIn DECADENCE\, Richard Kelly Kemick’s “accidental memoir of a sort\,” the author ranges widely through his myriad preoccupations and obsessions—volleyball\, municipal landfills\, dogs\, high school plays\, Christmas villages\, love—out of which the shape of a unique sensibility is revealed. Reminiscent of the three Davids—Rakoff\, Sedaris\, and Wallace—these essays accrete into a portrait of a man trying to make sense of a world in which there are no goddamn rules; and yet one in which every action has sometimes profound consequences. \nThis event is free\, but please RSVP on their website as capacity is limited. Books will be on hand for sale and signing!

SUMMARY:Spying on America: A Book Launch with Bill Gaston
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a warm and funny evening with Bill Gaston\, author of the new “fascinating road trip” book\, Spying on America. Will Ferguson describes it as “a journey through the looking glass into that torqued version of Canada we call the United States.” \nOn a June morning in 2022\, Bill Gaston drives off the Victoria–Port Angeles ferry in a rented Dodge Charger with his two sons. Born in the U.S. but “Canadian through and through\,” Gaston is on a road trip to Tabor\, Iowa\, the town founded by his great\, great\, great-grandparents as the westernmost hub of the Underground Railroad. \nThe Gastons’ 11-day trip to Tabor and back takes them up and down and across a swathe of rural red states. Motivated equally by a curiosity to find out what really makes Americans tick and the motto ya gotta stop\, the Gastons explore the American west\, navigate unmapped dirt roads\, eat too many French fries\, overnight in clapped-out motels\, visit a Buddhist mountain monastery\, marvel at spectacular landforms\, and enjoy unlikely conversations with real Americans. \nBoth a sideways glance at contemporary American culture and a mordant yet tender account of the true meaning of ancestry\, Spying on America is an unpredictably insightful exploration of family\, Canada’s neighbour\, and the “American bald ego.” \nThis event is free\, but please register here as capacity is limited. Books will be on hand for sale and signing!

SUMMARY:Wearing the Cheongsam
DESCRIPTION:The cheongsam (Cantonese for “long dress”)\, or qipao (Mandarin for “banner robe”) is an internationally recognized symbol of Chinese cultural identity and femininity. Originating as a combination of Han and Manchu clothing styles and later influenced by Western fashion\, the garment carries layered meanings across generations and diasporas. For Canadian-born women of Chinese descent\, wearing the cheongsam can evoke tensions between desire\, fear\, wonder\, and contestation. \nDrawing from her book Wearing the Cheongsam: Dress and Culture in a Chinese Diaspora\, curator and author-scholar Cheryl Sim examines the cheongsam’s history and revival overseas\, as well as its contested meaning for Chinese Canadian women as a symbol of heritage\, traditional values\, and cultural belonging. \nFollowing the presentation\, join Cheryl Sim and Mia Wu\, owner and senior tailor at Modernize Tailors\, for a discussion on contemporary cheongsam trends\, garment production\, and cultural appropriation. \nAttendees are encouraged to wear a cheongsam to the program.

SUMMARY:Pretendianism
DESCRIPTION:Esteemed novelist Joseph Boyden\, acclaimed film director Michelle Latimer and former University of Saskatchewan professor Carrie Bourassa have all made front-page news in recent years for the same reason: each is alleged to have been a “pretendian.” \nThe term “pretendian” has come to refer to someone who claims distant Indigenous heritage that doesn’t stand up to deeper scrutiny. But why would someone fake an Indigenous identity? \nThat question is the premise of The Pretendians (2022)\, a documentary from The Passionate Eye and the latest film featuring Anishinaabe author and playwright Drew Hayden Taylor. The documentary follows his cross-Canada journey\, revealing what really lies behind this explosive issue. \nRating: PG / Runtime: 44 mins\nPresented in partnership with CBC Gem.\n— \nAfter the film\, join Cee Peal\, the 2026 VPL Storyteller in Residence for a discussion around Pretendianism and the harm and division that it creates in Indigenous communities. \n— \nCee Peal is a theatre artist from the Nisga’a First Nation of Northern B.C. now working in Vancouver on the traditional\, unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-waututh)\, and sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) peoples. SUMMARY:Author Talks: Love at First Page
DESCRIPTION:Writing a book is a labour of love that often involves working through complex relationships right on the page. Join four Canadian novelists writing at the intersections of romance\, comedy and mental health as they discuss creating lovably flawed characters\, share the process of writing second chance storylines and offer their tried-and-true writing tips to emerging authors. Author meet-and-greet with book signings to follow after the event\, courtesy of bookseller Perfect Match Bookshop. \nFeaturing Natalie Sue\, bestselling author of I Hope This Finds You Well & 2025 Leacock Medal winner; Noreen Nanja\, debut author of breakout hit The Summers Between Us; Leanne Toshiko Simpson\, 2025 Kobo Prize in Romance winner for Never Been Better; and Jacqueline Firkins\, author of 5 novels – including Marlowe Banks\, Redesigned – and UBC professor & costume designer. A selection of Jacqueline’s romance cover dresses will be on display at VPL during this event. \n— \nNatalie Sue is the bestselling and award-winning author of I Hope This Finds You Well. She is a Canadian author of Iranian and British descent. She spent her formative years moving around western Canada with a brief stint in Scotland\, where she discovered her passion for storytelling as a means of connection and reading as a means of comfort. When she’s not writing\, she enjoys bingeing great and terrible TV\, attempting pottery\, and procuring houseplants. She lives in Calgary with her husband\, daughter\, and dog. \nNoreen Nanja is the author of contemporary romance debut The Summers Between Us. As a second-generation Canadian\, Noreen’s writing explores themes of identity\, race and belonging\, wrapped in stories of romantic and familial love. Born and initially raised in small-town British Columbia\, she then spent her formative years in Edmonton before moving to Montreal to pursue her Bachelors in Psychology and English Literature at McGill University and then the University of Calgary to complete her medical degree. She currently lives with her partner and her small dog in Toronto\, where she enjoys working in healthcare\, drinking vast amounts of strawberry matcha and exploring local bookshops. \nLeanne Toshiko Simpson is an award-winning writer\, educator and mental health advocate from Toronto. She writes joyful\, messy\, laugh-out-loud stories about living with mental illness and the moments of hope that help us get out of bed day after day. Leanne’s mental health rom-com Never Been Better won the 2025 Rakuten Kobo Prize for Romance. She teaches creative writing at the University of Toronto and spends her free time designing mental health greeting cards for Pebbles and Company. \nJacqueline Firkins is a writer (Marlowe Banks\, Redesigned)\, costume designer\, and lover of beautiful things. She’s on the full-time faculty in the Department of Theatre & Film at the University of British Columbia where she teaches character design\, world building\, and period costume construction courses. When not obsessing about where to put the buttons or the commas\, she can be found running by the ocean\, eating excessive amounts of gluten\, listening to earnest love songs\, and pretending her dog understands every word she says. \n***Jacqueline’s dresses (#booksasfashion) will be on display during the event and afterwards (until October 20th) through the windows of the Yosef Wosk Poet’s Corner on level 9 where the rooftop garden is. \nIn partnership with Perfect Match Bookshop (Vancouver’s first romance bookstore).
