SUMMARY:LOVE IS LOVE | George Littlechild
DESCRIPTION:Ashdale Gallery presents Love is Love\, an exhibition celebrating the extraordinary multi-decade career and visionary practice of Two-Spirit Plains Cree artist George Littlechild. \nLove is Love offers a powerful window into a lifetime dedicated to reclamation\, storytelling\, and visual resistance. A Sixties Scoop survivor who painstakingly scoured national archives to reclaim his roots. \nThis personal journey fuels his globally celebrated mixed-media practice. Exhibited internationally\, published as an award-winning author\, and recognized with multiple honorary doctorates\, Littlechild stands as an iconic figure at the pinnacle of his practice. \nArtist Statement\nThis exhibition marks a new chapter in my practice—a period of experimentation\, movement\, and renewed freedom. Moving away from relying primarily on acrylics\, I have embraced mixed media\, with crayons becoming an increasingly central element of my process. Crayons bring an immediacy and physicality to the surface that encourages spontaneity\, visible gesture\, and play. \n“I think of this body of work as an act of ‘jumping into a new chapter’ and\, at the same time\, ‘coming into one’s own identity.’ Identity is not fixed—it continues to unfold through experience\, memory\, place\, time\, and change.”\n– GEORGE LITTLECHILD \nRSVP for OCTOBER 17th \nArtist Talk 5pm\nOpening Reception 6-8pm

SUMMARY:Pretendianism
DESCRIPTION:Esteemed novelist Joseph Boyden\, acclaimed film director Michelle Latimer and former University of Saskatchewan professor Carrie Bourassa have all made front-page news in recent years for the same reason: each is alleged to have been a “pretendian.” \nThe term “pretendian” has come to refer to someone who claims distant Indigenous heritage that doesn’t stand up to deeper scrutiny. But why would someone fake an Indigenous identity? \nThat question is the premise of The Pretendians (2022)\, a documentary from The Passionate Eye and the latest film featuring Anishinaabe author and playwright Drew Hayden Taylor. The documentary follows his cross-Canada journey\, revealing what really lies behind this explosive issue. \nRating: PG / Runtime: 44 mins\nPresented in partnership with CBC Gem.\n— \nAfter the film\, join Cee Peal\, the 2026 VPL Storyteller in Residence for a discussion around Pretendianism and the harm and division that it creates in Indigenous communities. \n— \nCee Peal is a theatre artist from the Nisga’a First Nation of Northern B.C. now working in Vancouver on the traditional\, unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-waututh)\, and sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) peoples. He brings to the library his experience in storytelling\, theatre\, and image making\, drawing from his experience working as an actor\, director\, writer\, dancer\, and producer on various productions. With a passion for Indigenous studies and cultural evolution\, Cee is also the Indigenous outreach coordinator at The Cultch and the artistic associate at The Carmen Arts Group. \nTo find out more about Cee’s residency and keep up with his upcoming events visit: vpl.ca/storyteller

SUMMARY:On Native Land
DESCRIPTION:The Cultch presents: On Native Land\, a new musical that intertwines the lives of three seemingly disparate characters—a lawyer\, a Chief\, and a rising singer-songwriter—whose paths converge in a powerful tale of identity\, land\, and love. \nA dive into the heart of contemporary Indigenous narratives\, On Native Land is a sweeping love story with a focus on urban Indigenous communities\, offering solace and solidarity. \nCorey Payette’s contemporary score has a driving force rooted in the drum\, grounding the music in Indigenous tradition while soaring melodies echo groundbreaking Broadway scores such as Company and Dear Evan Hansen. Richly textured and emotionally charged\, his compositions bridge ancestral and modern tonalities\, creating a soundscape that is both timeless and boldly innovative. \nFor more information and tickets: thecultch.com/event/on-native-land/

SUMMARY:The Mush Hole
DESCRIPTION:The Cultch & Urban Ink present: The Mush Hole \nA theatrical dance performance about Canada’s first Indian residential school\, The Mohawk Institute\, a.k.a. The Mush Hole. From 1828 to 1970\, State and Church systems worked to sever Indigenous children from their families\, culture\, and language. Through the eyes of two generations of Survivors\, The Mush Hole evokes the raw\, unflinching realities of this legacy. \nFeaturing a powerhouse all-Indigenous cast\, the performance fuses visceral movement\, haunting cinematic imagery\, and a stirring original score to summon the experiences still held within the school’s bricks and mortar. Inspired by Survivors’ testimonials\, The Mush Hole is not only a reckoning\, it’s a radiant story of resistance\, remembrance\, and the courage to find light in even the darkest places. \n“The Mush Hole is a story about hope and finding light in dark places\, as much as it speaks to intergenerational trauma\, it screams resilience. Every single element represented on stage comes from survivors sharing their experiences with us” —Santee Smith; Creator\, Director\, and Performer \nPresented as part of TRANSFORM Festival 2025. \nFor more information and tickets\, visit thecultch.com/event/the-mush-hole

SUMMARY:Café Daughter Community Screening with Filmmaker Shelley Niro and Guest
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Café Daughter\, followed by a conversation with director Shelley Niro and a special guest. \nAbout the Film \nTrailblazing Kanien’kehaka (Mohawk) filmmaker and artist Shelley Niro (The Incredible 25th Year of Mitzi Bearclaw)\, whose international retrospective exhibition Shelley Niro: 500 Year Itch is currently touring\, directed and co-produced the film\, which she adapted from Kenneth T. Williams’ play of the same name. \nCafé Daughter features an all-star cast\, including Violah Beauvais (Beans)\, Star Slade (Diggstown)\, Tom Lim (Ditched)\, Sera-Lys McArthur (Broken Angel)\, and Billy Merasty (Frontier)\, as a family facing extreme obstacles with love and strength. \nFrom the Director’s Statement \n“Café Daughter is an inspiring story of an Indigenous Chinese girl who succeeds against all the unfair obstacles in front of her\, in a world that doesn’t see her power. This is a story that is not often told and one that we don’t see enough on screen. It comes from a time in Canada when people from minority groups were seen as inferior\, and when segregation and hate crimes were rampant. \nThe story of survival and what a mother does to protect her children is close to my heart. The issues that were depicted still happen in today’s world. Racism and exclusion are a part of Canadian society.” \nStory (Synopsis) \nCafé Daughter follows Yvette Wong\, a young Chinese-Cree girl determined to find her place in a small Saskatchewan community in the 1960s. In an effort to protect her children from discrimination\, Yvette’s mother Katherine\, a residential school survivor\, has charged her with a secret—to never reveal that she is part Cree. Through tragedy\, loss and insurmountable obstacles\, Yvette finds her way back to her roots; in the reclamation of her identity she makes her way towards her destiny of becoming a doctor and healer. \nDoors: 6pm\nScreening: 6:30pm\nQ&A: 8:15pm \nAll are welcome to this screening. Thank you to the Community Projects (CCID 202/302) course and supporters at Emily Carr University for making this screening possible. \nLearn more: https://cafedaughter.com/
