SUMMARY:Palestine Comedy Club
DESCRIPTION:Presented by The Cultch and Rumble Theatre\nProduced by Tough Crowd (London\, UK) \nPalestine Comedy Club is a road-movie following six Palestinian stand-up comedians from Haifa\, Ramallah\, Jenin\, Hebron and the Golan Heights as they devise a show exploring the dark humour of Palestinian identity. With no tradition of comedy clubs and communities divided by walls and checkpoints\, connecting across the divides proves enormously challenging. Despite differing travel permissions\, the tour gains momentum and audiences flock in. As war erupts at home\, performing in English to a conflicted British public becomes an existential mission to find joy and connection through laughter.

Board games are a great icebreaker and encourage teamwork around shared interests. At this fun and inclusive event you may want to bring in a brand new game that you haven’t had a chance to play yet or might have some questions that the group can assist with. If you are new to board games or haven’t played in a while\, you can also learn some new skills and join in with more experienced players.

SUMMARY:Thinking Beyond the Market: The Path to Genuinely Affordable Housing
DESCRIPTION:How can national housing research be translated into local\, livable reality? Join UBC Connects at Robson Square for a screening of Thinking Beyond the Market\, a film by Dr. Brian Doucet that uncovers “hiding in plain sight” housing solutions across Canada. From non-market developments in Kitchener to Indigenous-led projects in Vancouver\, the film challenges us to view housing as a human right rather than just a commodity. \nFollowing the screening\, Andrea Reimer (UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs) will moderate an integrated dialogue featuring experts from Djaka Blais (Hogan’s Alley Society)\, Craig Jones (Housing Assessment Resource Tools)\, and the filmmaker Dr. Brian Doucet. By connecting the film’s national themes to the local work of the Housing Assessment Resource Tool (HART) group and Hogan’s Alley\, the panel will explore how research-backed strategies in land use and tenant protection can overcome the unique barriers to affordability in Vancouver. \nFree and open to all.

SUMMARY:Clan of the Painted Lady | Film Screening & Director Q&A
DESCRIPTION:In this engrossing documentary\, presented for Asian Heritage Month\, director Jennifer Chiu reaches into her family’s history to explore the Hakka community — a people\, a language\, and a culture. Thought to hail from northern China\, the Hakka settled in the south of the country\, where they were known as the “guest people”. In the face of social marginalization\, many of them dispersed to places such as Mauritius\, India\, Jamaica\, and Canada — including BC’s Lower Mainland\, where Chiu spent much of her childhood. \nThe director’s reach is as expansive as her people’s migratory spread: using found Super 8 footage\, she explores the Hakka’s history in India\, and through candid\, probing interviews with relatives and community leaders she brings forth decades of a narrative that has been obscured for far too long. Chiu has made a warm\, congenial film that is never weighed down by its explorations of family secrecy\, the costs of assimilation\, and the very uncertain future of Hakka culture. \nEvent Details:\nDate: Saturday\, May 23\, 2026 \nLocation: VIFF Centre (1181 Seymour Street)\, VIFF Cinema \nTime & Schedule:\n2 to 3:45 P.M. – Film screening: Clan of the Painted Lady\n3:45 to 4:15 P.M. – Audience Q&A with director Jennifer Chiu \nCost: $12–$17/ticket

SUMMARY:Pretendianism
DESCRIPTION:Esteemed novelist Joseph Boyden\, acclaimed film director Michelle Latimer and former University of Saskatchewan professor Carrie Bourassa have all made front-page news in recent years for the same reason: each is alleged to have been a “pretendian.” \nThe term “pretendian” has come to refer to someone who claims distant Indigenous heritage that doesn’t stand up to deeper scrutiny. But why would someone fake an Indigenous identity? \nThat question is the premise of The Pretendians (2022)\, a documentary from The Passionate Eye and the latest film featuring Anishinaabe author and playwright Drew Hayden Taylor. The documentary follows his cross-Canada journey\, revealing what really lies behind this explosive issue. \nRating: PG / Runtime: 44 mins\nPresented in partnership with CBC Gem.\n— \nAfter the film\, join Cee Peal\, the 2026 VPL Storyteller in Residence for a discussion around Pretendianism and the harm and division that it creates in Indigenous communities. \n— \nCee Peal is a theatre artist from the Nisga’a First Nation of Northern B.C. now working in Vancouver on the traditional\, unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-waututh)\, and sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) peoples. He brings to the library his experience in storytelling\, theatre\, and image making\, drawing from his experience working as an actor\, director\, writer\, dancer\, and producer on various productions. SUMMARY:Agatha's Almanac Screening (VIFF Centre)
DESCRIPTION:The world may be racing forward\, but 90-year-old Agatha Bock is rooted in another rhythm that is grounded in heirloom seeds\, esoteric rituals\, and the meditative magic of living deliberately. \nAgatha’s Almanac is the latest immersive work from acclaimed multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker Amalie Atkins\, whose poetic sensibility elevates this documentary into a deeply textured cinematic experience. \nShot over six years by an all-woman crew on 16mm film\, Agatha’s Almanac quietly observes Agatha tending her ancestral Manitoba farm without a car\, cell phone\, or even running water. Her days are devoted to cultivating watermelon\, beans\, herbs\, and flowers\, and all entirely by hand. \nFor time go to website https://viff.org/
