SUMMARY:LOVE IS LOVE | George Littlechild
DESCRIPTION:Ashdale Gallery presents Love is Love\, an exhibition celebrating the extraordinary multi-decade career and visionary practice of Two-Spirit Plains Cree artist George Littlechild. \nLove is Love offers a powerful window into a lifetime dedicated to reclamation\, storytelling\, and visual resistance. A Sixties Scoop survivor who painstakingly scoured national archives to reclaim his roots. \nThis personal journey fuels his globally celebrated mixed-media practice. Exhibited internationally\, published as an award-winning author\, and recognized with multiple honorary doctorates\, Littlechild stands as an iconic figure at the pinnacle of his practice. \nArtist Statement\nThis exhibition marks a new chapter in my practice—a period of experimentation\, movement\, and renewed freedom. Moving away from relying primarily on acrylics\, I have embraced mixed media\, with crayons becoming an increasingly central element of my process. Crayons bring an immediacy and physicality to the surface that encourages spontaneity\, visible gesture\, and play. \n“I think of this body of work as an act of ‘jumping into a new chapter’ and\, at the same time\, ‘coming into one’s own identity.’ Identity is not fixed—it continues to unfold through experience\, memory\, place\, time\, and change.”\n– GEORGE LITTLECHILD \nRSVP for OCTOBER 17th \nArtist Talk 5pm\nOpening Reception 6-8pm

SUMMARY:The Polygon Gallery: Lee Miller: A Photographer at Work (1932–1945)
DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents the West Coast premiere of Lee Miller: A Photographer at Work (1932–1945) from Nov. 7\, 2025–Feb. 1\, 2026. This survey exhibition showcases more than 100 images taken during the renowned American photographer’s most intense and productive period: from her time as a highly sought-after studio portraitist\, to a commercial photographer for cosmetics\, then her time as the World War II correspondent for the British edition of Vogue. The collection of images reveal the behind-the-scenes dynamics of an artist managing a photography career amid the myriad challenges facing professional women at the time. Though Miller was previously best known for her collaboration with Man Ray and her close ties to the 1920s Surrealist movement\, the exhibition offers a richly layered\, complex portrait of this important artist and celebrated photojournalist. Lee Miller: A Photographer at Work (1932–1945) was organised in collaboration with the Lee Miller Archives (England)\, and was previously presented during Les Rencontres d’Arles (France) and at The Image Centre (Toronto). \nContent note: The exhibition features war photography\, including images Miller took of the liberation of the Dachau and Buchenwald concentration camps. \nAdmission to The Polygon Gallery is by donation\, courtesy of BMO Financial Group.

SUMMARY:The Polygon Gallery: Tranquility of Communion
DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents Tranquility of Communion\, a landmark exhibition of the late British-Nigerian photographer Rotimi Fani-Kayode’s work\, running from Feb. 28 to May 25\, 2025. This Canadian premiere brings together Fani-Kayode’s celebrated photographs alongside archival prints and previously unseen works from his student years. Fani-Kayode’s images treat same-sex\, multiracial love with a spiritual intensity\, employing symbolic language to explore themes of identity\, sexuality\, and race. Born into a prominent Nigerian family that emigrated to London in the 1960s in search of political refuge\, Fani-Kayode channeled his multifaceted identity and outsider status into a bold photographic practice that made him a prominent figure in the Black British art scene. His work left an enduring influence on contemporary art despite a career that was tragically cut short by his death in 1989\, at the age of 34. \nAdmission to The Polygon Gallery is by donation\, courtesy of BMO Financial Group.

SUMMARY:Closing Reception of Exhibition: Symbiotic Reconciliation – Art by Wenli Yang & Roy Hoh
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition has been extended to January 18th\, 2024. Please join us at the closing reception of this exhibition and meet the artists once again on January 18th between 2-5pm! \nAt the Lipont Gallery\, we are proud to introduce the visionary works of the Vancouver and Richmond-based artist duo\, Wenli Yang and Roy Hoh (a.k.a Shengqiang He). Their upcoming exhibition\, Symbiotic Reconciliation\, explores the intricate interplay between humanity\, space\, and nature through a diverse array of mediums—including paintings\, installations\, lens-based works\, and collages. This new body of work\, now revealed for the first time\, showcases their exceptional design prowess and conceptual depth. \nVancouver\, a city repeatedly lauded for its unparalleled quality of living\, offers a dynamic fusion of lush natural landscapes and urban sophistication—a testament to its reputation as a place that both enriches and sustains. However\, the once-celebrated provincial motto\, ‘British Columbia – The Best Place on Earth\,’ has been subtly retired\, hinting a shift in values. This transformation\, accelerated by the pandemic’s profound impact on our understanding of life quality\, resilience\, and environmental consciousness\, serves as a poignant backdrop for Yang and Hoh’s artistic inquiry. \nDrawing inspiration from Vancouver’s storied neighbourhoods\, the ubiquitous real estate developments\, and the region’s verdant flora\, Yang and Hoh’s artistry captures the evolving narrative of the city. Their work transcends mere aesthetic appeal\, delving deep into the essence of our coexistence with the urban and natural worlds. It is a synthesis of thoughtful interpretation and visual allure\, challenging the boundaries of time through the meticulous handcrafting of art and the transformative chemistry of materials. \nThe innovative imaging techniques employed by Yang and Hoh culminate in a unique visual language\, one that we believe will captivate and engage our audiences. SUMMARY:Observing the Growth of Life – Art by Shuyu Yin
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Lipont Gallery and curated by scholar Wu Tiehan\, the Observing the Growth of Life – Art by Shuyu Yin Exhibition will open on January 13\, 2024. This exhibition will display over ten exquisite flower and bird ink-on-rice paper prints by Yin. The famous art critic Mr. Yongnian Xue commented: Shuyu Yin’s freehand flower and bird paintings are very good at expressing inner beauty. This kind of inner beauty is nothing more than two things: one is the touching poetic feeling of dialogue with nature\, and the other is the tranquil and peaceful feelings rich in cultural accomplishment. His inheritance and development of the freehand tradition lies not only in the form of the brush and ink structure\, but especially in the freehand concept and cultural spirit. \nYin was born in Hebei\, China. He studied at the China Academy of Art by the West Lake\, and later studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts under Mr. Lichen Zhang\, a famous contemporary flower and bird ink painter. Yin later received his master’s and doctorate degrees. After graduation\, he worked at the China Academy of Art and became deeply involved in creation. He is good at freehand flowers and birds and has meticulous theoretical thinking. He is a distinctive young artist. \nIn addition\, Yin has a unique understanding of pen and ink sketching. This exhibition is named Observing the Growth of Life based on this. Sketching in modern art education refers to sketching of objects. Sketching in ancient flower and bird history refers to “moving animals” to express the characteristics and life status of flowers and birds. Yin’s sketches have two outstanding characteristics. First\, they are free and casual\, without any trace of deliberate workmanship. The second is to imitate while sketching\, combining imitation\, and sketching into one. \nIn freehand flower-and-bird ink painting\, it is not only inseparable from the generalization and refinement of objects\, but also must be achieved through the operation of brush and ink. Sticking to the ancient schemas of refining objects will obscure individuality and fresh feelings. If you blindly use your brush and ink based on your personality without paying attention to the details of the depiction\, it will also weaken the expressive power of art. Yin is not only good at expressing the most significant features of objects with concise\, free and controlled brush and ink\, but also notices that the various contrasting and unified relationships of brush and ink forms conform to the laws of formal beauty\, just like calligraphy. Through the combination and separation of the brush that dominates the ink and the images extracted from the objects\, he maximizes the “image-external meaning” and “brush-external interest” of brush and ink-like objects to write the heart. \nAs a representative young flower-and-bird ink painter born in the 1970s\, Yin’s growth and creation in the art process are exemplary. The images of his hometown are becoming more concise and concise through the communication of brush and ink. In the traditional Based on the foundation\, it shows the interest of the times. The moving part and contemporary value of Yin freehand flowers and birds lies in its creative inheritance of the essence of freehand brushwork. \nAmong the prints on display\, four of them of flowers and birds are accompanied by poems and calligraphy by Xuefeng Yi\, which complement each other interestingly. \nObserving the Growth of Life – Art by Shuyu Yin\nCurator: Tiehan Wu\nOpening Reception: Saturday January 13th\, 3-5pm \nCurator Talk (in Mandarin): January 13th\, 2-3pm \nExhibition: January 8 – February 29\, 2024
