SUMMARY:Frankenstein 1931 Screening | Fundraiser for Mary Shelley Meets a Monster
DESCRIPTION:An immersive fundraiser for Dreamqueen Immersive’s upcoming production of ‘Mary Shelley Meets A Monster’. You will be among the first guests to enter the Villa Diodati. With your ticket\, you can expect a sneak peek of the play\, followed by a screening of the original 1931 Frankenstein film. \nUpon entrance you will receive a goodie bag to snack on throughout the movie\, VIP swag\, and the chance to peruse our silent auction. Arrive in your best Regency wear for a chance to win best dressed and take home two free tickets to witness our take on the dark and stormy night in which Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein! \nWitty and sexy in equal measure\, Mary Shelley Meets a Monster invites guests into a stormy June in 1816\, when Mary Shelley and four companions decamp to a villa on Lake Geneva to invent a new genre of literature. \nIt begins simply enough as an evening spent rained in with some of the greatest creative minds in history\, but soon becomes a story about love\, sex\, creation\, ambition\, power\, and resurrecting the dead. \nFollow our socials @dreamqueenimmersive\, or learn more at https://www.dreamqueenimmersive.com/villadiodati

SUMMARY:Mental Health and Wellness Mini Conference
DESCRIPTION:Seasonal depression is real and it can have big effects on the mental health of Canadians. Triggers can include hot or cold weather\, changes in sleep patterns and disrupted routines\, social pressure\, shorter days\, body image concerns and/or seasonal allergies. \nJoin us for a series of discussions\, activities and locally produced short indie films around mental health and how to navigate getting through the Summer months\, into the Autumn and back around again. \nFeaturing Speakers: \nNishant Jain is a writer and sneaky-artist\, making secret drawings of his world everywhere he goes. Nishant’s work addresses urban coexistence\, and drawing as a way to pay attention to our physical environments. He is the host of the popular SneakyArt Podcast\, and writes a weekly Substack newsletter where he shares notes and drawings from his sketchbook adventures. His book\, Make (Sneaky) Art\, offers ideas to build a sketchbook habit based upon mindfulness and observation. \nTasha Feuchuk\, known online as terrorcatmom or as writer Drunk off Heart Condition\, is an avid card-sender and mental health advocate. Having lifelong struggles with physical and mental health\, Tasha feels strongly about taking time to take care of oneself. A literary creature\, former musical theatre and show choir kid as well as persistent medical anomaly\, Tasha began writing as a little one with a Dixon Primary Printer #1 and currently writes professionally with a mechanical keyboard or typewriter\, whatever strikes their fancy. Her disabilities\, namely Truncus Arteriosus Type 2 and a few DSM-5 entries\, do make their life a bit more complicated but they also have granted her incredible opportunities. She’s currently in cardiac rehab from her 3rd open heart surgery and working on a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style memoir as well as blogging.\n— \nFeaturing Short Films: \nThe Day My Cat Saved My Life by Kagah Goh – 2021 (7:26 mins): Based on a true-life story of a severe psychotic episode which brings the narrator to the brink of suicide\, where he is eventually found and saved by his cat. \nKagan Goh is originally from Singapore\, but is now a Vancouver-based Chinese Canadian multidisciplinary artist: published author\, spoken word poet\, playwright\, actor\, mental health advocate and activist. He was diagnosed with manic depression at the age of twenty-three\, in 1993. Kagan is a well-known spoken word artist\, essayist and poet\, a respected and established voice in Vancouver’s literary community for over three decades. He has been invited to\nperform at readings\, festivals and on radio\, and has published in numerous anthologies\, periodicals\, and magazines. In 2012\, Select Books in Singapore published his poetic memoir\, focused upon his relationship with his esteemed father\, Who Let in the Sky? \n*** \nPet Un-Friendly Cities: Vancouver by Gleyse de França – Potiguara Productions – 2023 (7:02 mins): A short documentary exploring the impact of Vancouver’s housing and pet policies on vulnerable communities\, mental health and everyday urban life. \nPets + Mental Health by Gleyse de França – Potiguara Productions – 2021 (1:00 min): A short film exploring isolation\, healing and the transformative power of the human-animal bond during the pandemic. \nGleyse de França is a Vancouver-based Brazilian filmmaker\, writer\, producer\, director and actor whose work explores mental health\, social issues\, immigration and contemporary urban life. Her short films Pets + Mental Health: Finding Love in Isolation and Pet Un-Friendly Cities: Vancouver have received international festival recognition across North America\, Europe and Asia. Through intimate\, socially conscious storytelling\, her films explore the human-animal bond\, mental well-being\, isolation and the realities of navigating contemporary urban environments. \n*** \nPebbles by Dimitri Kozma & Elaine Thrash – 2024 (12:17 mins): Emma is quietly unraveling inside an emotionally abusive relationship. Desperate for relief\, she turns to her therapist\, who offers an unexpected coping strategy: carry a small bag and drop in a pebble every time she feels hurt or dismissed. \nDimitri Kozma is a Brazilian‑Canadian director/filmmaker\, multimedia artist\, and writer whose work blends surreal visual language with grounded emotional storytelling. Known for Prime Time or Feast for Vultures\, The Meat\, and Unlovers\, his films explore identity\, trauma\, and the uncanny through intimate\, atmospheric worlds that blur the line between reality and imagination. \nElaine Thrash is a Brazilian‑Canadian actress and writer based in Vancouver. Her film credits include Lucid\, Know My Words Forever\, Prime Time or Feast for Vultures\, and many others. She created the Vancouver Fringe play The Lucky Life of a Black Cat\, and is the author of From Depression to Creation and How to be a Good Husband. Elaine wrote and stars in Pebbles\, bringing a raw\, intimate honesty to the role of Emma.

SUMMARY:Hayley Sales at Guilt & Co
DESCRIPTION:Hayley Sales’ romantic blend of genres\, nostalgic voice and timeless songwriting hearkens back to the likes of Ella Fitzgerald or Judy Garland\, but with a unique\, modern twist. “There’s a real showbiz\, old school entertainer vibe about her music\,” (LA Weekly) with songwriting that “fits squarely into the Great American songbook” (Billboard). Her stripped back\, analogue forward\, songs and production effortlessly fuse elements of traditional pop and jazz while “radiating with a quality both intimate and powerful” (The Mirror UK). Rolling Stone praised her music as “Soulful.”

SUMMARY:Gala to Change the Cancer Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Every two minutes\, someone in Canada receives a cancer diagnosis. While conventional medicine fights the disease\, patients frequently feel like a number in a fragmented system. Many turn to evidence-based integrative oncology to survive brutal treatment side effects\, but high costs force vulnerable families to choose between financial ruin or suffering in silence. \nThe Parmar Foundation is stepping into this divide to change the conversation. \nJoin us on Saturday\, October 3rd\, 2026\, at the Morgan Creek Golf Course in South Surrey for an elegant evening of community\, purpose\, and hope. Founded by integrative oncology pioneers Dr. Gurdev and Karen Parmar\, the foundation bridges the medical gap. \nAll proceeds directly fund: \nThe Patient Access Program: Fully subsidizing supportive\, whole-person cancer care for low-income BC families. \nClinical Research: Funding academic trials to prove how conventional and naturopathic systems can safely work together. \nEnjoy an exceptional dinner and live charity auctions. Help us ensure whole-person survival is a transparent right for everyone—not a luxury or a secret.

SUMMARY:Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor: End Times Fascism and The Fight for the Living World
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an essential conversation with Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor as they discuss their forthcoming book\, END TIMES FASCISM – And the Fight for the Living World. \nAcross politics\, technology\, and culture\, a powerful narrative is taking hold: that ecological collapse\, social breakdown\, and mass instability are inevitable. Klein and Taylor examine how this fatalism is shaping a worldview in which elites prepare for survival while abandoning collective responsibility. From fortified enclaves to fantasies of off-world escape\, they trace how fear of the future is being harnessed to justify inequality\, exclusion\, and authoritarianism. \nBut this apocalyptic thinking\, despite tech-bro billionaire and Christian fundamentalist insistence\, can be rejected. Klein and Taylor offer a sharp and necessary framework for understanding this moment and how to fight it. With clarity and urgency\, they challenge us to deny the pervasive belief in impending doom\, defend human dignity\, and imagine futures rooted in collective care\, solidarity\, and hope that change is possible. \nNaomi Klein is an award-winning journalist\, bestselling author of Doppelganger\, No Logo\, and The Shock Doctrine. At the University of British Columbia\, she is founding Co-Director of the Centre for Climate Justice and Associate Professor in the Department of Geography. \nAstra Taylor is an award-winning writer\, activist\, and documentarian\, and a cofounder of the Debt Collective. She is the author of The People’s Platform\, which won the American Book Award; Democracy May Not Exist\, but We’ll Miss It When It’s Gone; and The Age of Insecurity. \nCo-presented with the UBC Centre for Climate Justice and Knopf Canada

SUMMARY:Palestine Comedy Club
DESCRIPTION:Presented by The Cultch and Rumble Theatre\nProduced by Tough Crowd (London\, UK) \nPalestine Comedy Club is a road-movie following six Palestinian stand-up comedians from Haifa\, Ramallah\, Jenin\, Hebron and the Golan Heights as they devise a show exploring the dark humour of Palestinian identity. With no tradition of comedy clubs and communities divided by walls and checkpoints\, connecting across the divides proves enormously challenging. Despite differing travel permissions\, the tour gains momentum and audiences flock in. As war erupts at home\, performing in English to a conflicted British public becomes an existential mission to find joy and connection through laughter.
