SUMMARY:Dead Fellows Haunted Brewhouse
DESCRIPTION:Dare enter Vancouver’s Haunted (Brew) Hosue maze through 10\,000 sq ft of dark brewery corners creeping with live ghouls\, undead brewers\, and jump scares that’ll leave you fearing for your life! STRANGE DEAD FELLOWS HAUNTED BREWHOUSE is a spine-tingling experience at Strange Fellows Brewing\, taking place from October 27th to 31st. Step into the eerie otherworld world of our brewery\, transformed into a haunted spectacle. A self-guided tour through our Haunted Brewhouse with all sorts of specials surprises and frights\, this experience is perfect to get you in the mood for the spooky season! \nThe veil between the worlds of the living and the dead has been torn open and Strange Dead Fellows has been hijacked by the Undead on a grisly mission. \nSeeking revenge for their untimely deaths\, a party of brewers who died in a tragic accident on these grounds have returned from the dead to make beer for their friends from the other side who have a taste for beer with lots of “body”. \nWhat tragic accident you ask? Prior to 1917\, False Creek extended East to where Clark Drive and Strange Fellows Brewing stand today and was crossed by bridges connecting the farmland and industrial areas on the South side with downtown on the North. In October 1899 the East bridge collapsed\, sending everyone on it to their deaths. Nine people died\, including a team of Brewers who were enroute to deliver beer to Gassy Jack’s saloon in Gastown. \nEvery year around the end of October and the anniversary of the tragedy we have felt a disturbing presence in the brewery which is located exactly where the East Bridge once stood. Unfortunately\, the drowned brewers have returned in the flesh (um… more like without flesh) and are on the hunt for fresh ingredients for their terrifying beer: YOU. No number of humans it seems will satisfy their friends’ thirst for full-bodied beer. \nDo you and yours dare enter this swamp of horrors teeming with the terrifying creatures from the Land of the Dead\, and can you make it through without becoming the body in their brew? A glass of revitalizing beer and an otherworldly party with the Undead await those who survive.

SUMMARY:Curtains: A Musical Comedy Whodunnit
DESCRIPTION:Kander and Ebb’s Musical Comedy whodunnit takes the stage\, promising a killer blend of laughter and mystery! \nGet ready for an uproarious evening of laughter and suspense as APPLAUSE! Musicals in Concert presents Curtains\, a musical comedy whodunnit with music and lyrics by the Broadway collaborators Kander & Ebb who also wrote Chicago\, Cabaret\, Kiss of the Spiderwoman and Zorba. This forgotten musical will run at Arts Umbrella on Granville Island (formerly Emily Carr School)\, October 13/14/15. \nCurtains is a side-splitting parody that cleverly blends the world of musicals with the intrigue of murder mysteries. The plot unfolds as a detective\, inevitably smitten with the leading lady\, investigates a murder that occurs right on stage. Trapped in the theater after cast and crew members start mysteriously vanishing\, the show’s ensemble must decipher the “whodunit” puzzle while juggling their preparations for a Broadway debut. \nJohn Kander (1927 -) and Fred Ebb (1928 – 2004)\, Broadway collaborators for over four decades since their partnership began in 1962\, boast the longest-lasting composer-lyricist collaboration in the history of Broadway. Among their extensive portfolio of over 20 musicals\, Cabaret & Chicago stand out having achieved both Broadway success\, acclaimed revivals\, and Oscar-winning film adaptations. While many of their musicals have been shelved\, and mostly forgotten\, Curtains\, a project stemming from Kander’s determination to revisit and complete unfinished ventures after Fred Ebb’s passing\, opened on Broadway in 2007\, featuring a new book by Rupert Holmes. \nThe large cast of Curtains includes (in alphabetical order): Emily Burden\, Vanessa Coley-Donohue\, Rebecca Erin Curtis\, Cole Devlin\, Bronte Gooselaw\, Grace Hight\, Dakota Hutchins\, Brodie Klassen\, Jacob Leonard\, Loughran MacLeod\, Tara Martin\, Randy McCormick\, Ryan Nuenz\, Kat Palmer\, Sabrina Prada\, Thomas Schultes\, Dane Smit\, Keri Smith\, Peter Stainton\, Tessa Trach\, Andrew Wade\, Bonnie Welch\, Michael Wild\, and Jessica Wong. Music directed by: Diane Spiers. Directed by: Scott Ashton Swan. \nCurtains marks the 49th musical in concert for APPLAUSE! Musicals Society. Their unique approach involves just one week of rehearsals\, followed by an “in-concert” performance of the entire script and score\, with actors holding scripts and minimal staging and lighting to enhance the storytelling. APPLAUSE! remains the sole company in Canada dedicated to reviving rare\, shelved\, and forgotten musicals by beloved musical theater composers. \nFour performances October 13 (8PM)\, October 14 (2PM & 8PM)\, and 15 (2PM) on Granville Island at Arts Umbrella 1400 Johnston Street\, (formerly Emily Carr School). SUMMARY:Ian Maksin: Amor Renatus (Rebirth of Love)
DESCRIPTION:Introducing AMOR RENATUS (Rebirth of Love)\, a new album release concert tour from the acclaimed cellist and composer\, Ian Maksin\, who has been known for his unique way of pushing the boundaries of cello and contemporary music. This album unveils a collection of original instrumental compositions for cello\, powerfully augmented into a virtual orchestra through the use of loop pedal\, and further expanded by the sound of diverse percussion instruments ranging from trance-inducing grooves of the West African djembe to deep\, heart-beat-like sound of the Mongolian frame drum. \nReflecting on the tragic ongoing events in Ukraine\, the album delves deep into the darkest recesses of the human soul\, unearthing a myriad of feelings universal to all wars: grief\, anger\, anguish\, and indignation. As the journey continues\, the music guides the listener through a path to redemption and a spiritual transformation\, allowing them to ultimately find peace\, comfort\, healing and empowerment. Drawing musical inspiration from diverse sources from J.S. Bach and Mozart to Astor Piazzolla and Balkan jazz\, Maksin has taken his eclectic and quite distinct musical style to yet a new dimension. \nApart from performing the entire new album\, in the second half of the concert\, Ian Maksin and members of his international Zaria band will perform other original instrumental compositions as well as traditional songs from Maksin’s collection of over 200 songs in 31 languages. A portion of the proceeds from the concert tour and album sales will be directed to For Wellbeing\, a not-for-profit organization providing humanitarian relief in the areas of Ukraine most affected by war.

SUMMARY:Peace Country
DESCRIPTION:The Firehall is pleased to launch its 2023-2024 season with the world premiere of Pedro Chamale’s Peace Country from Thursday\, October 12 to Sunday\, October 22\, 2023. \nPeace Country is inspired by playwright Pedro Chamale’s upbringing in Chetwynd\, B.C. This new work by Chamale is an examination of intercultural friendship\, the realities of northern living\, and the vilification of northern communities in the fight against the climate crisis. \nSet in a small rural town in British Columbia’s Northern Interior\, a new political party has swept into office with the promise of big changes – changes that could put the nail in the coffin of a little carbon-economy town\, that is\, if climate change doesn’t wipe it out first. In a time where it feels easy to spit rhetoric at one another\, a familiar face in the party forces childhood friends to have tough conversations and work together for a change. Through Peace Country\, we see a plea for dialogue around climate action in a time of great division. \n“This play is a way for me to put both sides of my heart\, the urban and rural\, on stage in direct conflict with each other\, with humour and humility for a greater cause\,” says Chamale. \nDonna Spencer\, The Firehall’s Artistic Producer\, adds\, “It gives me great joy to bring Peace Country to the stage as the season opener with our partners rice & beans theatre. It is entertaining\, relevant to what Canadians are facing today\, and delivered in a heartfelt and honest manner.”
