SUMMARY:Calle Verde + Jhoely Triana Flamenco
DESCRIPTION:The November edition of The Dance Centre’s popular Discover Dance! noon series highlights the art of flamenco with an exciting double bill of works by Calle Verde (comprising Maria Avila\, Michelle Harding\, and Peter Mole) and Jhoely Triana Flamenco. \nThe program features their latest creations: Calle Verde’s La Faena is loosely based on a bullfight and addresses the issue of being able to alter the trajectory of a narrative that seems inevitable. Triana’s solo Arboles (Trees) represents honouring our roots and gathering strength from the past to reach new heights. This thrilling performance showcases flamenco’s technical brilliance and emotional power\, with heart-stirring live music and singing. \nThere will be a post-show artist talkback.

SUMMARY:From Slander’s Brand
DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents From Slander’s Brand from Nov. 10\, 2023–Feb. 4\, 2024\, an exhibition bringing together three monumental works by Hannah Darabi\, Rachel Khedoori\, and Ron Terada. In response to transformational historical periods — the 1979 Iranian Revolution\, the Iraq War of 2003\, and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic — each artist asks how art acts as a witness\, interlocutor\, and critical reflector on pivotal moments of historical trauma and transformation. The artworks employ language found in books\, newspapers\, and websites to create a new kind of “picture” of each of these momentous periods. \nAdmission is by donation\, courtesy of BMO Financial Group. \nPhoto credit: Ron Terada\, TL;DR\, 2020–2022. Installation view: WE DID THIS TO OURSELVES\, The Power Plant\, Toronto\, 2023. Photo: Toni Hafkenscheid. Courtesy the artist and Catriona Jeffries\, Vancouver.

SUMMARY:Stay On It: Music by Julius Eastman
DESCRIPTION:There’s a Julius Eastman renaissance happening and you’re invited. \nWriting music in New York City’s burgeoning downtown scene in the 1970s and ‘80s\, Julius Eastman was a young\, black\, gay man who criss-crossed musical worlds and provocatively “swerved from critical acclaim to gate-crashing controversy.” (NPR) \nEastman’s music mixes the evergreen politics of his time with bold grooves and enthralling melodies that sound equally fresh. Think Minimalism (like the music of Philip Glass and Steve Reich) combined with joyful improvisation and moments of surprising stillness. \nDon’t miss it when the Music on Main All-Star Band and the Vancouver Youth Choir breathe life into “music that commands attention: wild\, grand\, delirious\, demonic.” (The New Yorker)

SUMMARY:Hopeful Monster: Music by Eve Egoyan and Mauricio Pauly
DESCRIPTION:Journey through an auditory space filled with newly imagined music and ecstatic abandon. \nHopeful Monster is Eve Egoyan and Mauricio Pauly’s new recording and performance project\, where the augmentation and extension of the piano’s sonic and expressive range come alive in new ways: infinite sustain\, vibrato\, tremolo\, expressively revealed harmonic overtones\, crescendos on a single note\, and pitch bending. \nSpontaneous joy and refreshed ears are what comes to mind when you hear Mauricio’s acoustic and electronic tools respond to Eve’s pianism. These two performer/creators evoke sounds that reflect the immediacy of friends making music together. \nPerformed in the round\, Eve and Mauricio’s concert allows you to share an intimacy between musicians and audience\, listening together.

SUMMARY:SHOW(ti)ME: Zubin Kanga
DESCRIPTION:Audiences won’t want to miss London-based pianist\, composer\, and technologist Zubin Kanga when he plays electrifying music by some of the hottest names of the global new music world: Alexander Schubert\, Laura Bowler\, Luke Nickel\, and Zubin Kanga himself. \nHow does a pianist “play the internet”? Alexander Schubert’s WIKI-PIANO.NET is a hilarious and curious challenge that pairs piano\, spoken instructions\, and an internet score that can change at any time. \nLaura Bowler’s SHOW(ti)ME investigates our physical and virtual selves. Over the course of the piece\, you’ll witness an explosive magnification of the minutia of being a pianist\, contorted through a collage of multimedia. \nIn Luke Nickel’s hhiiddeenn vvoorrttiicceess\, simulated roller coaster velocities become metronomic pulsations passing through wireless connections to small vibrating watches cueing a pianist to press keys that hit hammers on strings. It’s a wild – and fun! – ride. \nZubin Kanga’s Metamemory is a dialogue between his real and artificial music memories\, using a neural network created from Kanga’s own past to create music that is both monstrous and strangely beautiful. \nEnter an evocative sound world that will take you beyond anything that one can imagine. \nVenue Sponsor: Downtown Van (The Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association).

SUMMARY:Etuaptmumk/Two-Eyed Seeing: Ways of Being and Seeing
DESCRIPTION:Etuaptmumk/Two-Eyed Seeing: Ways of Being and Seeing is a cultural gathering regarding the impact of human-made environmental destruction on Mother Earth that invites Knowledge Keepers to share stories as activists and academics to bear witness. Let the community hold us all together as we walk towards what climate justice and action mean to us\, and remember the tales we will tell future generations. \nA circle of conversation series brings Elders\, academics\, and activists together at four events. Each event will focus on our impact on the four elements of Mother Earth: water\, air\, fire\, and earth. After the series\, the stories and knowledge will culminate into a workshop gathering on Sunday\, November 5 to discuss our roles in these ever-changing environmental times and what we are taking away with us from these four events. \nCoordinated by Rosemary Georgeson & Lara Aysal\nProduced by The Only Animal\nPresented by Firehall Arts Centre & Vancouver Moving Theatre

SUMMARY:Dead Fellows Haunted Brewhouse
DESCRIPTION:Dare enter Vancouver’s Haunted (Brew) Hosue maze through 10\,000 sq ft of dark brewery corners creeping with live ghouls\, undead brewers\, and jump scares that’ll leave you fearing for your life! STRANGE DEAD FELLOWS HAUNTED BREWHOUSE is a spine-tingling experience at Strange Fellows Brewing\, taking place from October 27th to 31st. Step into the eerie otherworld world of our brewery\, transformed into a haunted spectacle. A self-guided tour through our Haunted Brewhouse with all sorts of specials surprises and frights\, this experience is perfect to get you in the mood for the spooky season! \nThe veil between the worlds of the living and the dead has been torn open and Strange Dead Fellows has been hijacked by the Undead on a grisly mission. \nSeeking revenge for their untimely deaths\, a party of brewers who died in a tragic accident on these grounds have returned from the dead to make beer for their friends from the other side who have a taste for beer with lots of “body”. \nWhat tragic accident you ask? Prior to 1917\, False Creek extended East to where Clark Drive and Strange Fellows Brewing stand today and was crossed by bridges connecting the farmland and industrial areas on the South side with downtown on the North. In October 1899 the East bridge collapsed\, sending everyone on it to their deaths. Nine people died\, including a team of Brewers who were enroute to deliver beer to Gassy Jack’s saloon in Gastown. \nEvery year around the end of October and the anniversary of the tragedy we have felt a disturbing presence in the brewery which is located exactly where the East Bridge once stood. Unfortunately\, the drowned brewers have returned in the flesh (um… more like without flesh) and are on the hunt for fresh ingredients for their terrifying beer: YOU. No number of humans it seems will satisfy their friends’ thirst for full-bodied beer. \nDo you and yours dare enter this swamp of horrors teeming with the terrifying creatures from the Land of the Dead\, and can you make it through without becoming the body in their brew? A glass of revitalizing beer and an otherworldly party with the Undead await those who survive.
