SUMMARY:The 2024 Phil Lind Initiative continues with X Martinez
DESCRIPTION:On March 21\, climate activist and hip-hop artist with Indigenous Mexica roots X Martinez will take to the Phil Lind Initiative stage with a discussion moderated by author and co-director of UBC’s Centre for Climate Justice Naomi Klein. Now 23 years old\, Xiuhtezcatl Martinez (first name pronounced Shoe-Tez-Caht) has been on the frontlines of the climate and environmental movement since the young age of 6 and is widely recognized for his passionate and unwavering fight for climate justice. Named one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s “25 under 25” and one of Time Magazine’s “TIMES Next 100\,” he has been involved as a plaintiff in multiple legal proceedings—calling out the U.S. government and giants of the fossil fuel industry for failing to take necessary action on climate change. Xiuhtezcatl has spoken multiple times at the UN\, addressing the General Assembly and has also spoken on panels with the likes of Bernie Sanders\, Van Jones\, Shailene Woodley\, Bill McKibben\, and Pharrell Williams. Xiuhtezcatl is also an artist at his core\, using his music as a yet another platform to share urgent messages of Indigenous solidarity and care for the planet. Collaborating with musicians including Atlanta rapper Raury and Grammy nominated musician and actor Jaden Smith\, his quick-witted lyrics challenge systems of injustice to envision a better future.

When their next loves appear (or not)\, they have a small window of opportunity to glean the truth; that is\, if their visitors from the future are ready to cooperate. \nThe temporary appearance of these future partners thrusts the couples into immediacy. They can no longer ignore problems or skirt conversations; the consequences of their actions are right in front of them. In episodic fashion\, hidden secrets and devastating dynamics are exposed. Meanwhile\, the enigmatic owner of the hotel\, John\, seems to have an agenda of his own… \nHis belief that radical honesty is the imperative key to a successful relationship is the play’s heartbeat. It’s always there\, fraying edges or making tummies sick; until it delivers its final proclamation. The longer you prevent truth\, the more impactful its inevitable announcement. \n— \nHotello!\nPresented by I Spy Peaches Productions\nShow run: March 19 – 28 \nProduced by I Spy Peaches\nPlaywright: Bianca Kenna\nDirector: Eric Smith\nAssistant Directors: Katie Cowger & Diego Arciniega\nIntimacy Coordinator and Fight Director: Julie Murphy \nFeaturing:\nDiego Arciniega\nWilliam Edward\nGuy Fauchon\nBrian Hinson\nMadeleine Humeny\nSofie Kane\nBianca Kenna\nLinda Pollard\nRobyn Ross\nChristopher Shyer\nEric Smith

SUMMARY:2024 Phil Lind Initiative continues with Viet Thanh Nguyen
DESCRIPTION:On March 14\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author\, MacArthur Genius and refugee advocate Viet Thank Nguyen dives into his talk Speaking for an Other moderated by Dr. Christopher B. Patterson. Viet Thanh Nguyen’s writing is bold\, elegant\, and fiercely honest. His remarkable debut novel\, The Sympathizer\, won the Pulitzer Prize\, was a Dayton Literary Peace Prize winner\, and made the finalist list for the PEN/Faulkner award. Coming to the US as refugees during the Vietnam War in 1975\, he was driven by lack of representation to write about the war from a Vietnamese perspective—globally reimagining what we thought we knew about the conflict. Now\, almost a decade since his groundbreaking novel was published\, Viet revisits the developing conversations on the polemic and polarizing narratives facing migrants in the US today with his Phil Lind Initiative talk titled Speaking for an Other. As displaced individuals contend with the physical perils of war\, we consider a different conflict that has emerged within the global imaginary: how has storytelling been used by some to build a new sense of community within the United States\, while being leveraged by other segments of American society to efface them? With time and memory dislocated\, how do narratives have the potential to be wielded as both refuge and subterfuge in the United States of both today and tomorrow?

SUMMARY:The Beauty of Nature: Paintings by Alex Ji
DESCRIPTION:THE BEAUTY OF NATURE – PAINTINGS BY ALEX JI \nOpening: Tuesday March 12\, 2024 7-9pm \nExhibition: March 12 – April 10\, 2024\nMonday – Friday 10am-5pm\, Tuesdays until 8pm\, closed on holidays. \nIn recent years\, immigrant artists have significantly enriched Canada’s art scene with their high-quality works. Lipont Gallery is proud to present nearly twenty recent paintings by Alex Ji\, showcasing his unique perspective on the natural beauty of the Greater Vancouver area and beyond. The works are landscape sketches and oil paintings by Ji during the two years he has been living in Canada. They depict the beautiful natural scenery of various regions around the world\, mainly the scenery of the Greater Vancouver area. \nAn accomplished oil painter\, Alex Ji holds degrees from the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts\, where he studied under the renowned artist Professor Yu Xiaodong. With a rich history of international exhibitions and accolades\, Ji has become a celebrated figure in the Metro Vancouver art scene\, known for his realistic yet emotionally charged landscapes. Over the years\, he has participated in art exhibitions held in different countries\, and his works have been published in different publications and collected by collectors. To date\, he has held four solo exhibitions in Metro Vancouver. Since moving to Canada in 2022\, Ji has set up his art studios in Richmond and West Vancouver\, and continues to create with a broader vision and deeper emotions\, bringing his artistic works to a higher level. His works are known for his superb realistic skills and unique artistic perspective. Through careful depiction of details and clever use of colours\, he captures the rich and diverse beauty of nature and displays it on canvas in a deeply touching way. \n“I always adhere to a pure and sincere view of painting. I love to use concrete and realistic painting methods to convey my emotions. In my opinion\, only reality can express my deep love for nature more intuitively. At the same time\, art needs to be expressive\, to touch people’s hearts. Therefore\, in my paintings\, I will strengthen the abstract expression of aesthetic elements\, such as primary and secondary virtuality and reality\, density and concentration\, dry and wet staining\, thin and thick covering\, etc. Such processing not only gives the work a sense of beauty and can convey my emotions more strongly. I particularly enjoy painting Plein Air\, having a dialogue with nature\, and immersing my body and mind in it. Nature is changeable\, it can be quiet and harmonious\, or passionate. Whenever I feel the moment when the scene blends\, it will inspire me. This is the biggest motivation for my creation.” \nIn this exhibition\, the work Echoes of Peace\, which was selected for the 2023 Federation of Canadian Artists Exhibition\, is the highlight of the exhibition. This painting captures a serene landscape with masterful detail and colour\, reflecting nature’s subtle dynamism. Through the control of details and the use of colour expresses the rich and subtle changes in nature\, forming a harmonious natural symphony. The work Pastoral depicts an intoxicating pastoral\, with blue sky and white clouds intertwining in the sky\, and sheep coming from afar\, as if the beautiful pastoral music is purifying our souls. \nFree parking.\nTransit: Canada Line Aberdeen Station \nwww.lipontgallery.ca\nwww.facebook.com/lipontgallery/\nwww.instagram.com/lipontgallery/\nhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuuHgBkttf-fpT_vVAtouqA

SUMMARY:An Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Mitch and Murray Productions is proud to present the Canadian premiere of An Intervention from Friday\, March 8 to Sunday\, March 17\, 2024 at Performance Works on Granville Island. \nWritten by Olivier Award-winning playwright Mike Bartlett and directed by Aaron Craven\, An Intervention is a touching and funny play about what happens when you hate your best friend. \nAn exploration of friendship\, responsibility and the murky territory that exists at the boundary between them\, two longtime friends are deeply divided over a foreign war in the Middle East. The more present dilemma for them is one of intervention – when is it right to intervene in a friend’s personal conflict? \n“We live in polarizing times where even the closest of friendships can fracture over a political divide\,” says Craven. “An Intervention by Mike Bartlett examines the age of outrage with razor-sharp intellect\, wit\, and empathy. It’s not a prescriptive story\, but a nuanced and beautiful examination of two humans and friends buckling under the strain of modern day anxieties. It’s the perfect play for our times.” \nAn Intervention is a timely and moving story about friendships\, mental health\, and what we owe to the closest people in our lives. \nMarch 8-17\, 2024 | Performance Works | 1218 Cartwright Street \nOpening Night: Friday\, March 8 at 8:00pm \nPreview: March 7 at 8:00pm \nPerformance Times: March 9\, 12\, 13\, 14\, 15\, & 16 at 8:00pm \nMatinees: March 10\, 13\, & 17 at 1:00pm \nPost-Show Talkback: Friday\, March 15 \nTickets: $15-$35 | Available online at mitchandmurrayproductions.com

SUMMARY:Frog Belly Rat Bone
DESCRIPTION:Anvil Theatre is pleased to present Frog Belly Rat Bone on Friday\, March 8 at 1:00pm and Sunday\, March 9 at 3:00pm. Both shows will be followed by a Q&A with the performers. \nIncorporating beautifully handcrafted puppets and an original pop/rock musical score\, ‘Cementland’ comes to life as two enigmatic garbage collectors tell the story of a very special boy whose singular wish is to find a treasure. One day\, the boy discovers a rusty tin box packed with colourful envelopes and an old wrinkled note: “Put my wondrous riches into the earth and enjoy.” So the boy opens the envelope and tosses the contents – “hundreds of tiny gray specks” – onto the ground. Nothing happens. But night will come and the specks must be protected from junkyard thieves so the boy invents a guard…”he gathers wet smelly socks\, moldy old pillow stuffing and scraggly wire bringing his creation\, Frog Belly Rat Bone\, to life.” Frog Belly isn’t the sharpest or the quietest\, but it works. In time\, ‘Cementland’ blooms with beautiful flowers and delicious vegetables\, and the junk pile of dark grays yields to an explosion of colour. With some strategy\, strong communication\, a lot of patience and goodwill\, we can all grow wondrous riches\, transforming dark surroundings into something beautiful. \nTickets for Frog Belly Rat Bone range in price from $11.50 to $21.50 and are available online at www.ticketsnw.ca or by phone at 604.521.5050.

SUMMARY:MOI - Momentum of Isolation
DESCRIPTION:The Firehall Arts Centre is thrilled to present Shay Kuebler’s MOI – MOMENTUM OF ISOLATION from Wednesday\, March 6 to Saturday\, March 9\, 2024. \nProduced by Radical System Art\, MOI – MOMENTUM OF ISOLATION bases its themes around loneliness and isolation to reveal how social bonds and connections are essential to our humanity. The performance explores the objective and subjective experiences through the individual\, the group\, and modern society – a society with shifting values and an ever-advancing digital way of life. \nTo shape a digital world on stage\, MOI – MOMENTUM OF ISOLATION places live interactive video and sound around the performers. These elements enhance ideas on how technology influences our lives\, and that it can both empower and disempower us. Further distilling isolation\, solo performances and the extended social isolation of one character on stage are critical to the arc of the performance. Within MOI – MOMENTUM OF ISOLATION\, one character’s interactions are only with inanimate objects. Through puppeteering and stage craft\, the inanimate world comes to life\, which highlights how social isolation can disrupt our connection to reality. Our social bonds allow us to understand that we have an impact on what is around us – that we exist. \n“Shay Kuebler’s dedication to crafting inventive performance pieces that confront the immediate human experience is to be admired\,” says Firehall Arts Centre’s Artistic Producer\, Donna Spencer. “MOI is one of those powerful works. Shay began his exploration of isolation and loneliness at the 2020 Dancing on the Edge Festival when the world was in the early stages of pandemic lockdown and the festival was presented online. His combination of digital and powerful physical movement allows us to feel how that loss of touch continues to affect us.” \nMarch 6 – 9 | Firehall Arts Centre | 280 E. Cordova \nOpening Night: Wednesday\, March 6 at 7:30pm \nPerformance Times: Wednesday-Saturday\, 7:30pm \nTickets: From $30 at firehallartscentre.ca | 604.689.0926 \nPost Show Talkback: March 7
