No cover charge.\n—\nAllan MacInnis of the Georgia Straight described THE STARLING EFFECTs first EP as “psychedelic” and “shoegazey”\, observing that “the guitars on the album move in a dreamlike\, narcotized swirl that would make them worthy of a Gregg Araki soundtrack” and that “it all rocks out a bit more when the band plays live”.\nThat last observation was certainly true\, but the band’s intention upon entering Little Red Sounds in January was to capture the full range of its sound\, from the dreamy swirls to the propulsive crunch. Working with the studio’s owner and resident recording wizard\, Felix Fung\, the Starling Effect emerged with its first new material in over four years. This show marks the official release of these long-in-the-works new songs.\n—\nHOTEL EMPRESS’s sonic blueprint has its roots in the world of ripping guitar riffs\, shimmering vintage synths\, and tightly-woven melodies. Roots that defined an era and gave birth to many of their influences like The Pixies\, The Breeders\, and early Radiohead.\nA band characterized by a collision of styles (and personalities)\, their sounds bleed together into a vision of indie synth-rock that’s both light and dark\, tender and fiery. Something you can dance to and something you can rage to in the twilight hours of the night.\n—\nPONTIAC marks a new era for David Cotton of Vancouver scene stalwarts Seven Nines and Tens\, but still features some of his signature songwriting tricks ie understatedly intelligent\, cerebral\, and memorable tunes.\nWith this new project\, Cotton simply aims to deliver a less arcane\, idiosyncratic sound which aligns stylistically with genres he has loved his entire career: indie rock\, progressive blues\, classic rock\, and post punk.\nPontiac’s debut record “Hard Knox” was released January 14\, 2024\, with a limited edition cassette released by Coup Sur Coup records to mark the occasion.

It was named a Top 10 Arts Event of the Year by The Globe and Mail\, and spawned the JUNO-nominated album Trench Songs. \nIn this world premiere of Over the Ridge\, The Fugitives – headed by songwriters Brendan McLeod and Adrian Glynn along with Christopher Suen (banjo) and Carly Frey (violin) – collaborate with choreographer and Ballet BC dancer Jacob Williams to expand this narrative through dance. Over the Ridge explores the misconceptions and offers reflections on the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The story is told through direct address\, historical readings\, dance\, and new re-imaginings of the songs WWI soldiers wrote in the trenches. \n“As soon as we started workshopping this and I saw Jacob’s incredible choreography and the dancers’ fantastic interpretation\, I realized this was a good way of giving voice to over 20\,000 WWI Canadian soldiers who were underage\,” says McLeod. “Their youth is embodied on stage in a way that is both literal enough to understand and abstract enough to be aesthetically compelling.” \nDeveloped in partnership with the Massey Theatre Society\, with help from Ballet BC and Arts Umbrella\, Over the Ridge adds original contemporary dance to storytelling\, spoken word and live music\, resulting in a kinetic ride through history that delves into our strong connection to the past and passionately argues against the exploitation of young lives. \nMassey Theatre’s Executive Director Jessica Schneider says\, “We are so eager to witness Ridge transform into Over the Ridge. A mother\, father\, aunt\, and uncle must learn how to move forward after their shared grief as they re-learn how to interact with one another through humour\, forgiveness\, and love. \nIt has been a year since Paul and Lucille’s son Craig died by suicide\, and their once-solid family bonds are starting to break down. While the now-separated couple tries to honour their son\, Lucille’s sister Liset and her husband Jim refuse to discuss their nephew. The ties that keep the four together as sisters\, best friends\, and spouses are strained by grief and guilt… until a visit from a fox changes everything. \n“When my eye caught the cover of this newly published play in 2017\, I felt compelled to read it as I had recently had a ‘fox’ experience\, different from this but also very meaningful\,” says Firehall Arts Centre’s Artistic Producer\, Donna Spencer. “Once I started to read it\, I knew it was a play for Firehall audiences\, and I appreciated how Keith had shaped this powerful story\, blending humour with grief\, friendship with raw pain\, and the power of the natural world.” \nKeith Barker is a member of the Métis Nation of Ontario. He is a playwright\, actor\, and director from Northwestern Ontario. Keith is also the Director of the Foerster Bernstein New Play Development Program at the Stratford Festival\, and the former Artistic Director at Native Earth Performing Arts in Toronto. He is the recipient of the Dora Mavor Moore Award and the Playwrights Guild’s Carol Bolt Award for Best New Play. Keith received a Saskatchewan and Area Theatre Award for Excellence in Playwriting for his play\, The Hours That Remain\, as well as a Yukon Arts Award for Best Art for Social Change. He was a finalist for the Governor General’s Award for English Drama for This Is How We Got Here.
