SUMMARY:Paddle Song
DESCRIPTION:The Firehall Arts Centre wraps its 2023-2024 season by welcoming back Cheri Maracle in Paddle Song. Running from Friday\, May 24 to Sunday\, June 2\, this energetic and humorous one-woman musical reflects on the proud legacy of trailblazing Mohawk poet E. Pauline Johnson. \nProduced and performed by multi-award nominated performer and singer/songwriter Cheri Maracle\, Paddle Song captures the heart and journey of this gifted writer and poised orator\, from a young woman canoeing the Grand River at home on Chiefswood\, to her promising career just beginning\, to earning her place on stages in Ontario\, then Canada\, the United States\, and Great Britain. \nOne of Canada’s most remarkable feminists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, Pauline Johnson endlessly fought for equality\, acceptance\, and respect as an Indigenous female performer with a voice in a male-dominated literary world. A monument in Stanley Park commemorates her work and legacy.

SUMMARY:The Arsonists
DESCRIPTION:“Who fears change Invites greater misfortune\, What can one do Against misfortune?” \nIn literature\, the strange often happens — a homeowner favors a random acquaintance over their own family\, people turn into rhinoceroses\, a living person receives a funeral wreath… Or even the devil himself with his entourage might visit the city. All the above stories share something in common with “The Arsonists.” \nIt’s a tale of peaceful people\, leading ordinary lives\, only occasionally disturbed by the news — reading the newspaper or drinking with friends in a bar. And as night falls\, another house in the city catches fire. But if one is hospitable and cautious\, it will always be someone else’s house. Right? \nThe show is presented in Russian with simultaneous English dubbing into personal headphones.

SUMMARY:VFS Online Industry Talks: Glenne Campbell
DESCRIPTION:Learn from a titan of industry how costuming is often overlooked in entertainment. \nVFS invites you to a fireside chat with veteran Costume Designer Glenne Campbell (21 Jump Street\, Battlestar Galactica\, Colony)\, a titan of the industry with over three decades of experience\, and an Emmy nomination for creating unforgettable looks for film\, television\, and theatre (and even for the Canadian Olympic team!) \nAbout Glenne Campbell\nGlenne Campbell\, a Vancouver-based Costume Designer\, has worked in film\, TV\, theatre\, and special events. Inspired by the 1920s period costumes in the 1967 film Thoroughly Modern Millie\, Glenne channeled that spark into professional costuming\, designing for 21 Jump Street and dressing a young Johnny Depp. Since then\, she’s designed for Bordertown\, Lonesome Dove: The Series\, Viper\, and Da Vinci’s Inquest\, before moving into the Battlestar Galactica universe where she experimented with mixing technologies for costumes and earning an Emmy nomination for her work. More recently\, she designed for the series\, Colony\, and later for the hit series\, Outlander. \nWARNING: This Industry Talk is not for aspiring costumers (but costumers are welcome). Rather\, this is an illuminating discussion on the integral\, and often overlooked\, costume department. Alongside Stan Edmonds\, Head of VFS’s Makeup Design program\, Glenne will discuss how the industry needs to realign to give greater priority to costuming within production\, debunking the misconception that costuming is simply “getting dressed”\, and the importance of an open\, functional dialogue between costume departments and all other departments.

SUMMARY:Seeing the Mountains: Traditional Chinese Paintings by Jiangang Su
DESCRIPTION:Lipont Gallery once again teams up with Vancouver-based artist Jiangang Su to hold a Chinese painting and calligraphy exhibition in the summer of 2024\, providing audiences and collectors in the Greater Vancouver area with an opportunity to learn and collect traditional Chinese artworks. \n“Stone” is an important aesthetic object in Chinese traditional culture. Taihu stone is a stone with unique beauty. It is the beauty created by the uncanny workmanship of nature and contains the curious feelings of the literati. The phenomenon of appreciation of strange stones existed in the Wei\, Jin\, Southern and Northern Dynasties\, and the appreciation of strange stones reached a new climax in the Song Dynasty (960-1279 A.D.) To this day\, stone appreciation has always held an irreplaceable place in the hearts of literati. \nSeeing the Mountains is based on the theme of scholars admiring stones. The method of construction using brush and ink is expressed in the form of tea scroll hangings to create an elegant atmosphere in the study room. The calligraphy content of the exhibition includes a simple and square official script and an exquisite fan-shaped regular script that is full of Jiangnan literati feelings. \nJiangang Su is an artist of classical Chinese painting and calligraphy based in Vancouver. He is known for his gongbi-style paintings\, versatile calligraphy styles\, and seal carving. He studied in China under renowned maestro Yan Gongda from age thirteen. Besides being a dedicated artist\, Su is an avid art educator and collector of Chinese art. His artworks have been featured in numerous exhibitions\, charity auction events and media coverage in China and internationally. \nThe exhibition opens on Wednesday\, May 15th\, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Lipont Gallery\, 4211 No. 3 Road\, Richmond\, BC. \nThe exhibition opens from May 15th to June 6th\, 2024 Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm with extended hours to 8:00pm on Tuesdays. \nThis exhibition is part of the 2024 Explorasian Festival.

SUMMARY:Eunoia
DESCRIPTION:The Firehall is pleased to present Fujiwara Dance Inventions’ Eunoia from Wednesday\, May 8 to Saturday\, May 11\, 2024. \nEunoia is a dance-theatre production and adaptation of Christian Bök’s award-winning book of poetry of the same name. It is a conceptual book written in the form of a lipogram where each of its five chapters is constrained to the use of one vowel. It is much lauded as a work\, won the 2002 Griffin Poetry Prize\, and became a bestseller in Canada and the UK. \nEunoia means ‘beautiful thinking’ and is the shortest word in the English language to contain all five vowels. In the book\, the author imposed the severe constraint of working with only one vowel in each chapter. Remarkably\, and despite the severe limitations to the usable vocabulary\, Bök was able to create oddly narrative poems with characters\, scenes\, and coherent action. \n“The choreography has imposed constraints as well\,” says Fujiwara. “For example\, in Chapter E\, we use the neck\, spleen\, knees\, etc. Rather than limit the choreography\, we’ve found that these constraints have allowed us to create a delightful parallel world that is separate and yet\, still relates to the poem in odd and unexpected ways.” \nThroughout the production\, poetry is used as text – spoken live\, as a kind of score for the dance\, in multimedia expressions and as the basis for movement invention. The work is rigorous\, surprising\, and frequently droll.

SUMMARY:Café Daughter Community Screening with Filmmaker Shelley Niro and Guest
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Café Daughter\, followed by a conversation with director Shelley Niro and a special guest. \nAbout the Film \nTrailblazing Kanien’kehaka (Mohawk) filmmaker and artist Shelley Niro (The Incredible 25th Year of Mitzi Bearclaw)\, whose international retrospective exhibition Shelley Niro: 500 Year Itch is currently touring\, directed and co-produced the film\, which she adapted from Kenneth T. Williams’ play of the same name. \nCafé Daughter features an all-star cast\, including Violah Beauvais (Beans)\, Star Slade (Diggstown)\, Tom Lim (Ditched)\, Sera-Lys McArthur (Broken Angel)\, and Billy Merasty (Frontier)\, as a family facing extreme obstacles with love and strength. \nFrom the Director’s Statement \n“Café Daughter is an inspiring story of an Indigenous Chinese girl who succeeds against all the unfair obstacles in front of her\, in a world that doesn’t see her power. This is a story that is not often told and one that we don’t see enough on screen. It comes from a time in Canada when people from minority groups were seen as inferior\, and when segregation and hate crimes were rampant. \nThe story of survival and what a mother does to protect her children is close to my heart. The issues that were depicted still happen in today’s world. Racism and exclusion are a part of Canadian society.” \nStory (Synopsis) \nCafé Daughter follows Yvette Wong\, a young Chinese-Cree girl determined to find her place in a small Saskatchewan community in the 1960s. In an effort to protect her children from discrimination\, Yvette’s mother Katherine\, a residential school survivor\, has charged her with a secret—to never reveal that she is part Cree. Through tragedy\, loss and insurmountable obstacles\, Yvette finds her way back to her roots; in the reclamation of her identity she makes her way towards her destiny of becoming a doctor and healer. \nDoors: 6pm\nScreening: 6:30pm\nQ&A: 8:15pm \nAll are welcome to this screening. Thank you to the Community Projects (CCID 202/302) course and supporters at Emily Carr University for making this screening possible. \nLearn more: https://cafedaughter.com/
