SUMMARY:Slip Slap Trip Wack
DESCRIPTION:Leaky Heaven Performance presents the world premiere of Slip Slap Trip Wack from July 26–28\, 2024 at the Russian Hall. The family-friendly work brings to life the imaginative worlds of 8–12-year-olds\, in a unique collaboration between the artists of Leaky Heaven and youth who live near the studio at the Russian Hall. The performance seats audience members on a 360-degree rotating device\, which allows them to both watch and volunteer to perform in the sketches. Slip Slap Trip Wack takes inspiration from Our Gang\, a series of short comedic films from the 1920s that later became known as The Little Rascals. Developed over a 10-week workshop organized with RayCam Co-operative Centre\, the participatory performance incorporates gags and pranks that pull from centuries-old vaudeville routines and tropes. The youth-developed project offers a fresh spin on comedy that allows kids to be kids\, and adults to be reminded of the joy of play. \nAddress\nRussian Hall\n600 Campbell Ave\nVancouver\, BC V6A 3K1 \nDates\nFriday\, July 26: 5–8pm\nSaturday\, July 27: 10am–4pm\nSunday\, July 28: 10am–4pm \nTicket prices\nAdults: $15\nYouth $5 or entrance with the bartering of any toy\, book\, or other belonging \nPhoto\nMax\, one of the youth involved in Slip Slap Trip Wack. SUMMARY:PLAY! A Retro-Speculative – Paintings by Sally Clark
DESCRIPTION:Lipont Gallery is honoured to present PLAY! A Retro-Speculative\, an exhibition of oil paintings by Vancouver-based artist Sally Clark. \nThis year\, we were pleased to discover a group of oil paintings created by Clark in the late 1970s. These works are astonishing. There’s a joy in these paintings that elicits a yearning in people and inspires curiosity about that era. As Wong Kar-wai’s film In the Mood for Love states\, “That era has passed\, and everything belonging to that era no longer exists.” Every era has its own qualities that define it. With her unique painting style\, Sally Clark gives us an amazing perspective on those times. \nUnlike Clark’s recent series of paintings\, ‘The Divine Insider\,’ which focuses close-up on the human face\, treating it as a landscape\, in this series of works\, ‘PLAY!\,’ Clark investigates the zeitgeist of the era by presenting full-length portraits. Her subjects are juxtaposed with vivid colours and geometric shapes\, emblematic of the 1970s and which\, curiously\, reflect and embody the sitters. Clark says: “I embarked on this series because I was inspired by my love of Manet’s early paintings and how he challenged social stereotypes. Making a social statement was my plan.” \nIn the 1970s\, the art world had seen a burgeoning of ideas in art movements\, including land art\, performance art\, feminist art\, etc. Marginalized people continued their fight for justice and equality. Clark’s works capture the spirit of her subjects and convey the beauty\, vulnerability\, glamour and joy of that time. Most of the paintings in the exhibition were created in Toronto in the late 1970s. The characters in the paintings are either personal friends\, actors in costumes\, or people exploring a fantasy. The exaggerated\, patterned backgrounds\, old furniture\, the poses of the protagonists and the props they brought are like scenarios created in a film\, making the atmosphere of each painting humorous\, beckoning\, relaxed\, warm\, or mysterious… urging us to enter the world of the person and engage in the stories that lie within. \nThe exhibition also includes a rare self-portrait of Clark that evokes a science fiction movie. It which allows us to have a deeper understanding of Clark\, who is both a painter and an award-winning playwright. It is not difficult to see that Clark “performed” a series of “dramas” with her oil paintings in the 1970s. Half a century later\, everyone’s life is still being played out like a drama. We ourselves are the characters in the drama\, and it’s time for a retro speculative! \nThe exhibition opens on Tuesday July 23rd from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Lipont Gallery\, Rm218 (no elevator\, NOT handicap accessible)\, 4211 No. 3 Road Richmond\, BC. \nThe exhibition will be on view from July 23rd to August 29th\, Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm with extended hours to 8pm on Tuesdays. SUMMARY:ANTI-ICON: APOKALYPSIS
DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents the Canadian premiere of ANTI-ICON: APOKALYPSIS\, Martine Gutierrez’s first major solo show in Canada. The exhibition features 17 self-portraits in which Gutierrez transforms herself into a pantheon of influential heroines who have become legendary through depictions in art history\, pop culture\, and religion. Her exquisite transformations into Ardhanarishvara\, Cleopatra\, the Virgin Mary\, and Joan of Arc among others\, are photographed with the style and glamour of luxury fashion magazines. Using simple sets and minimal props\, Gutierrez subverts class\, gender\, celebrity\, and other notions that give images “iconic” status. Originally commissioned by Public Art Fund in 2021 and circulated on bus shelters in New York\, Chicago\, and Boston\, the series was last on view in three separate parts across New York\, San Francisco\, and London galleries in 2023. The Polygon presentation will be the first time the series will be seen in its entirety. \nAdmission to The Polygon Gallery is by donation\, courtesy of BMO Financial Group. \nAddress\n101 Carrie Cates Court\, North Vancouver\, V7M 3J4\nGallery hours Wednesday\, 10am–5pm; Thursday\, 10am–9pm; Friday–Sunday\,\n10am–5pm

SUMMARY:Arushi Jain\, Sheherazaad and Piu In Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of groundbreaking music at the Indian Summer Festival\, featuring three trailblazing voices in contemporary South Asian music. Weaving classical vocal traditions with daring sound experimentations\, these artists are forging new sonic landscapes. \nDelhi-born\, US-based artist Arushi Jain is known for her “heavenly hybrid” of modular synthesis and Indian classical music (Uncut Magazine). Jain deploys sounds that infuse ambient and drone aesthetics into traditional Indian forms. Her 2024 release\, Delight\, draws from Raga Bageshri and “emanates iridescence through a diversity of electronic and acoustic textures” (Pitchfork). Fresh from touring with Oneohtrix Point Never\, the ‘Modular Princess’ is set to captivate Vancouver with her innovative soundscapes. \nMaking her Canadian debut\, Indo-American vocalist Sheherazaad is redefining contemporary folk-pop. Influenced by her bicultural upbringing\, Sheherazaad uses Hindi and Urdu to deliver poetic narratives that navigate themes of displacement and identity. Her debut 2024 album\, Qasr\, produced by Grammy-winner Arooj Aftab\, offers an ethereal ode to her South Asian heritage that invites listeners “to forge our own castles\, musical queendoms\, and impossible dreamlands.” \nOpening the night is Piu\, a Nanaimo–based vocalist and composer whose hypnotic performances combine ambient electronics with global rhythms. A lifelong student of Indian classical music\, Piu’s forthcoming 2024 debut album promises a fusion of cultural sounds and personal narratives\, continuing her exploration of new musical territories. \nExperience these celestial voices at the nexus of tradition and innovation\, where sublime\, otherworldly soundscapes come to life. \nThis event is curated by Jarrett Martineau

SUMMARY:The Last Prayer Bead: Poetry\, Story and Song
DESCRIPTION:Come and gather beneath the vast summer sky for an enchanting evening where poetry\, story and song will bring us into the power of the present moment. As we sit\, facing the twilight over picturesque False Creek\, you’ll experience an astonishing tapestry woven from words and melodies. \nWe are honoured to welcome back Arthur ‘Rickydoc’ Flowers\, the great griot and hoodoo mystic. Known as a sage of stories\, Arthur channels the deep-rooted tradition of West African griots through his blues-infused storytelling. His narratives resonate with the mystic axis of a mala turning through fingers\, each bead unravelling a myth and serving as a wayfinder through the dark perils of our times. \nThe night will feature a medley of celebrated musicians and poets\, including Governor General’s Literary Award winner Cecily Nicholson alongside violinist and vocalist Sejal\, writer and poet Hari Alluri paired with Juno award-winning Gordon Grdina on oud and Dayne Ogilvie Prize winner Jillian Christmas\, as well as a solo performance by Jody Okabe. \nWitness the magic unfold as dusk settles\, and bask in the paradox of endings/new beginnings. SUMMARY:Group Exhibition ALLUSIVE
DESCRIPTION:Lipont Gallery presents – Group Exhibition ALLUSIVE \nFeaturing Painting\, Drawing\, Ceramics\, Collages\, and Photography by Kay Austen\, Roy Hoh\, Jiabao Shen\, Xiangmei Su\, Wenli Yang\, June Yun\, and Monique Zhang.\nAs the summer season unfolds in Vancouver\, local artists channel nature’s wonders\, social environments\, and personal memories through their talents and innovative mediums in the exhibition\, ALLUSIVE. \nSquamish-based clay artist Kay Austen builds floral-shaped ceramic triptych wall pieces that embody the livelihood of local blooms. “The emotional impact of colour and the vagaries of different methods of firing and surface treatment all play a part toward the power of the finished piece.” \nRichmond-based emerging artist Jiabao Shen\, a School of the Art Institute of Chicago trained professional painter and recent Vancouver Film School’s graduate\, “explores themes such as ancient\, contemporary and futuristic worlds with a fervent focus on flowing landscapes. Her new series Surging Dragon – Departing Fire is inspired by an ancient Chinese text Chu Ci\, weaving together a tapestry of past and future\, reality and fantasy amongst ink.” \nRichmond-based artist Monique Zhang creates ethereal\, dreamlike paintings that explore childhood memories\, inviting viewers to slip backwards from the real world into primitive happiness and emotions. Her work encourages the audience to revisit the simplicity of childhood life. Using monotonic “pure” colors and plain charcoal drawings\, she reflects the innocence and purity inherent in the meaning of life. Monique’s art captures the essence of youthful wonder\, bringing a psychological value that offers solace and comfort. \nVancouver-based artist June Yun is a veteran oil painter of Vancouver’s misty yet poetic garden and pond scenes. She is an expert in finding\, visualizing and sublimating the highlights of the scenic neighbourhoods of Vancouver in her paintings. In the ALLUSIVE Exhibition\, she will present a series of “portraits” of the four seasons and a backlit translucent print on Mylar to express her awe in Vancouver’s spring season. \nWest Vancouver-based artist Xiangmei Su\, a TEDx speaker\, and University of British Columbia trained professional artist\, gains new knowledge from the “investigation” of nature\, regional culture\, creative media\, traditional crafts and maintains and manages her relationship with history\, tradition\, humanity\, and nature. Her Reflection Series (later renamed the Untitled Series) depicts fallen leaves on water and the reflections of foliage\, offering an alternative perspective on Vancouver’s beauty and its captivating spell on its residents. \nVancouver and Richmond-based artist duo Wenli Yang and Roy Hoh explore the intricate interplay relationship between humans\, society and nature through various mediums—painting\, installation\, lens-based work\, collage\, etc. Drawing inspiration from Vancouver’s storied neighbourhoods\, the ubiquitous real estate developments\, and the region’s verdant flora\, Yang and Hoh’s art captures the evolving narrative of the city. \nThe exhibition opens on Thursday July 4th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Lipont Gallery\, 4211 No. 3 Road Richmond\, BC.\nThe exhibition will be on view from July 4th to 25th Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm with extended hours to 8pm on Tuesdays.
