SUMMARY:The Roots of our Gardens
DESCRIPTION:A collaboration between UBC ACRE (Centre for Asian Canadian Research and Engagement)\, Afro Van Connect Society (by Black Space Media)\, the Museum of Vancouver and the Vancouver Maritime Museum. \nTHE ROOTS OF OUR GARDENS: TOUR & CHAT\nExplore food\, land and culture through the Backyard Garden at the Museum of Vancouver and the Fare Farm Garden at the Vancouver Maritime Museum! \nBoth gardens engage with issues of food security and culture\, specifically for racially marginalized communities and histories. The Backyard Garden focuses on food grown by Chinese immigrants to Canada while the Fare Farm Garden is focused on the Afro-Indigenous community—both focus on culturally relevant food. \nThe program will include a tour of both gardens and the food grown there\, the history and background that shaped the projects\, and how they are used as spaces for food justice and cultural connection. After the tour\, folks will gather inside for further discussion about the gardens and the issues they connect to. \nPlease note that the garden tours will take place outdoors and with some walking between the two museums. Dress for the walk and the weather! If you anticipate any accessibility concerns\, please contact us at programs@museumofvancouver.ca and we will do our best to accommodate.

SUMMARY:Slip Slap Trip Wack
DESCRIPTION:Leaky Heaven Performance presents the world premiere of Slip Slap Trip Wack from July 26–28\, 2024 at the Russian Hall. The family-friendly work brings to life the imaginative worlds of 8–12-year-olds\, in a unique collaboration between the artists of Leaky Heaven and youth who live near the studio at the Russian Hall. The performance seats audience members on a 360-degree rotating device\, which allows them to both watch and volunteer to perform in the sketches. Slip Slap Trip Wack takes inspiration from Our Gang\, a series of short comedic films from the 1920s that later became known as The Little Rascals. Developed over a 10-week workshop organized with RayCam Co-operative Centre\, the participatory performance incorporates gags and pranks that pull from centuries-old vaudeville routines and tropes. The youth-developed project offers a fresh spin on comedy that allows kids to be kids\, and adults to be reminded of the joy of play. \nAddress\nRussian Hall\n600 Campbell Ave\nVancouver\, BC V6A 3K1 \nDates\nFriday\, July 26: 5–8pm\nSaturday\, July 27: 10am–4pm\nSunday\, July 28: 10am–4pm \nTicket prices\nAdults: $15\nYouth $5 or entrance with the bartering of any toy\, book\, or other belonging \nPhoto\nMax\, one of the youth involved in Slip Slap Trip Wack. SUMMARY:PLAY! A Retro-Speculative – Paintings by Sally Clark
DESCRIPTION:Lipont Gallery is honoured to present PLAY! A Retro-Speculative\, an exhibition of oil paintings by Vancouver-based artist Sally Clark. \nThis year\, we were pleased to discover a group of oil paintings created by Clark in the late 1970s. These works are astonishing. There’s a joy in these paintings that elicits a yearning in people and inspires curiosity about that era. As Wong Kar-wai’s film In the Mood for Love states\, “That era has passed\, and everything belonging to that era no longer exists.” Every era has its own qualities that define it. With her unique painting style\, Sally Clark gives us an amazing perspective on those times. \nUnlike Clark’s recent series of paintings\, ‘The Divine Insider\,’ which focuses close-up on the human face\, treating it as a landscape\, in this series of works\, ‘PLAY!\,’ Clark investigates the zeitgeist of the era by presenting full-length portraits. Her subjects are juxtaposed with vivid colours and geometric shapes\, emblematic of the 1970s and which\, curiously\, reflect and embody the sitters. Clark says: “I embarked on this series because I was inspired by my love of Manet’s early paintings and how he challenged social stereotypes. Making a social statement was my plan.” \nIn the 1970s\, the art world had seen a burgeoning of ideas in art movements\, including land art\, performance art\, feminist art\, etc. Marginalized people continued their fight for justice and equality. Clark’s works capture the spirit of her subjects and convey the beauty\, vulnerability\, glamour and joy of that time. Most of the paintings in the exhibition were created in Toronto in the late 1970s. The characters in the paintings are either personal friends\, actors in costumes\, or people exploring a fantasy. The exaggerated\, patterned backgrounds\, old furniture\, the poses of the protagonists and the props they brought are like scenarios created in a film\, making the atmosphere of each painting humorous\, beckoning\, relaxed\, warm\, or mysterious… urging us to enter the world of the person and engage in the stories that lie within. \nThe exhibition also includes a rare self-portrait of Clark that evokes a science fiction movie. It which allows us to have a deeper understanding of Clark\, who is both a painter and an award-winning playwright. It is not difficult to see that Clark “performed” a series of “dramas” with her oil paintings in the 1970s. Half a century later\, everyone’s life is still being played out like a drama. We ourselves are the characters in the drama\, and it’s time for a retro speculative! \nThe exhibition opens on Tuesday July 23rd from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Lipont Gallery\, Rm218 (no elevator\, NOT handicap accessible)\, 4211 No. 3 Road Richmond\, BC. \nThe exhibition will be on view from July 23rd to August 29th\, Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm with extended hours to 8pm on Tuesdays. Closed on weekends and statutory holidays. Admission is free. \nExhibition:\nDates: July 23 – August 29\, 2024\nAddress: Lipont Gallery\, Rm 218\, 4211 No. 3 Road\, Richmond\, B.C.\, V6X 2C3\nHours: Mon-Fri 10 AM to 5 PM\, Tuesdays until 8 PM \nFree reserved parking is on the south and north sides of the building.\nTransit: Canada Line Aberdeen Station
