Long before Asian Canadian writing was institutionally recognized\, Jim and the pioneers of his generation built pathways where none existed\, transforming railways\, symbols of exclusion and labour\, into highways of connection\, storytelling\, and belonging. \nThis panel of writers reflect on how Jim nurtured emerging voices\, insisted on the importance of community over individual acclaim\, and modelled a literary practice rooted in care and cultural memory. Through personal stories\, reflections on mentorship\, and discussions of their artistic lineage\, this conversation honours Jim’s belief that writing is not only an act of expression but also a responsibility to the history and community of those who come after. \nThe panel invites audiences to consider how mentorship can be a form of resistance and how literary communities are built.

DESCRIPTION:Palace have been making music together for over a decade. What started out as carefree jam sessions between Leo Wyndham\, Rupert Turner and Matt Hodges in an airless studio in North London established a DIY ethos that remains intrinsic to the spirit of the band to this day. \nIn early 2025\, Palace took a career leap releasing the Greyhound EP on their own label\, Palace Presents – a collective they’d started in 2016 as a monthly night at The George Tavern in East London\, which had quietly grown into something more intentional. A positive and protected space as Leo described it\, away from the usual constraints of the music industry. \n“Kid” was released in April 2026\, together with the announcement of a 30-date tour of the USA and Canada in the Fall of 2026\, culminating in a show at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. \n“Kid is about longing for a child an ocean away. It’s the ache we feel for our people when we’re separated from them. It doesn’t feel like a sadness or heaviness\, but more an affirmation of that love\, a primal release sung into the sunset as the road flies by.” \nJoin us for Palace’s Chan Centre debut and experience their immersive sound brought to life on our stage.
