SUMMARY:Vancouver Poetry House's Verses Festival of Words
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Verses Festival of Words is thrilled to return from April 27–May 2\, 2026\, at Chill X Studio. This year’s theme\, Intimate Dialogues\, examines how we share connections\, consume content\, and whisper resilience in the face of global silencing and genocide. The programming focuses on gathering\, community\, shared learning\, and amplifying voices in solidarity. \nHighlights include the return of the annual Canadian Individual Poetry Slam (CIPS)\, taking place over three nights and featuring a performance by Spin El Poeta. This year’s Oral Traditions\, an international Indigenous Poetry Slam\, will be co-produced by Derek Edenshaw\, Native Hip Hop Society\, Franz Seachel\, and Enabling Arts Society. \nOther festival favourites coming back include Famous Last Words from Death Rides a Unicorn\, a hilarious evening of poetry games featuring some of Canada’s favourite personalities. Mashed Poetics is one of the city’s longest running showcases that combines poetry with live music — an ensemble of Canada’s favourite poets create and perform poems inspired by musical hits performed by the Mashed Poetics cover band led by Spillious the Ridiculous.

SUMMARY:On Native Land
DESCRIPTION:The Cultch presents: On Native Land\, a new musical that intertwines the lives of three seemingly disparate characters—a lawyer\, a Chief\, and a rising singer-songwriter—whose paths converge in a powerful tale of identity\, land\, and love. \nA dive into the heart of contemporary Indigenous narratives\, On Native Land is a sweeping love story with a focus on urban Indigenous communities\, offering solace and solidarity. \nCorey Payette’s contemporary score has a driving force rooted in the drum\, grounding the music in Indigenous tradition while soaring melodies echo groundbreaking Broadway scores such as Company and Dear Evan Hansen. DESCRIPTION:Opera Unbound presents the world premiere of emerging Vancouver composer Roan Shankaruk’s evocative new chamber opera The Fox\, on stage April 17-19\, 2026 at ANNEX (823 Seymour Street). SUMMARY:Chelsey Grewar: The Wannabe Cowgirl Tour
DESCRIPTION:Chelsey Grewar is saddling up and taking herself on a stand-up tour through the wild west of Canada with The Wannabe Cowgirl Tour visiting Vancouver’s Little Mountain Gallery on April 10\, Calgary’s The Attic Bar & Stage on April 15\, and Edmonton’s Grindstone Theatre on April 18. With charm\, relatability\, and a bit of chaos\, Chelsey Grewar captivates audiences with self-deprecating jokes that feel like your bestie oversharing (in a good way). \nThe Wannabe Cowgirl Tour\, which received a 2025 CANCOM Comedy Grant from the Foundation of Canadian Comedy\, will put Chelsey’s prairie influenced comedy to the test where the real cowgirlies are. Chelsey is a rising star in Toronto’s comedy scene\, known for her storytelling and observational comedy such as revealing why being a twin isn’t always fun\, especially when you’re the weird one. Her comedy explores feminism\, generational divides\, sexuality\, navigating adult friendships\, bad luck with employment\, and – of course – horse girls.

SUMMARY:Agatha's Almanac Screening (VIFF Centre)
DESCRIPTION:The world may be racing forward\, but 90-year-old Agatha Bock is rooted in another rhythm that is grounded in heirloom seeds\, esoteric rituals\, and the meditative magic of living deliberately. \nAgatha’s Almanac is the latest immersive work from acclaimed multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker Amalie Atkins\, whose poetic sensibility elevates this documentary into a deeply textured cinematic experience. \nShot over six years by an all-woman crew on 16mm film\, Agatha’s Almanac quietly observes Agatha tending her ancestral Manitoba farm without a car\, cell phone\, or even running water. Her days are devoted to cultivating watermelon\, beans\, herbs\, and flowers\, and all entirely by hand. \nFor time go to website https://viff.org/
