SUMMARY:Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol
DESCRIPTION:The Arts Club Theatre Company is set to launch its holiday season with the uplifting musical Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol at the historic Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage. This returning audience favourite featuring music and lyrics by the iconic Dolly Parton as Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is reimagined and set in the Smoky Mountains during the 1930s. \nWith Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol\, Parton brings her signature storytelling and songwriting to one of the most timeless holiday tales\, creating a musical celebration of hope\, family\, and community that is perfect for the whole family. Set during the 1930s in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee\, this heartwarming musical reimagines Ebenezer Scrooge as the owner of a mining company town\, where his callous greed blinds him to the joys of the season. As a Christmas Eve snowstorm approaches\, Scrooge is visited by his deceased business partner and three ghosts who compel him to see life and love anew.

SUMMARY:Eloise in Love
DESCRIPTION:“Eloise in Love” is a monologue play about female love\, shamanism\, past lives and sex work. It is based on a real-life love story of French sacred prostitute Eloise and German spy Camilla that happened in Paris on the eve of the Second World War. The play features the poems from the novel “Eurydice in Love\,” based on the actual events of Alexander and Eurydice’s past lives. The authors invite the audience for an honest conversation about unconditional love\, shamanism\, past lives\, the spiritual design of sex work\, and why souls choose to be born as sexual healing artists. \nThe love story of Camilla and Eloise was cut short when Eloise\, at the age of twenty-seven\, was stabbed to death in an occult ritual by a demonically possessed man. Neither Camilla nor Eloise had a chance to tell each other they were the love of each other’s life (as both women shamed themselves for their unconventional love). Now\, they received a divine chance to confess their feelings through Alexander and Eurydice\, as two soulmates met in Vancouver of the twenty-first century to create this work of art and heal their past wounds through a shared shamanic education. \nThe play captures artistic expressions of love\, but it’s also a deeply personal confession of both souls. In the first storytelling part of the play\, Alexander shares how he was spiritually guided to move to Vancouver to become a shamanic apprentice under the guidance of the Sechelt Spirits and during the play would tell the history of these lands. He would explain how he works with the souls of living and dead and what kind of shamanic assistance he provides on their spiritual path. Exploring the knowledge from the four-year shamanic research into the divine design of sexual healing arts and the memories of his two past lives as a female sex worker\, Alexander also presents his spiritual views on sex work and how this craft is woven into an evolutionary path of certain souls. He would also confess how the Sechelt Spirits guided him to meet seven souls of Vancouver escorts he knew in past lives and how unconditional love for them led him to assume his destined purpose of a spiritual guide and healer of the souls of British Columbia’s sex workers. \nEurydice\, wearing a dress\, takes charge in the second poetic part of the play. Through her rhymes\, she confesses Eloise’s feelings for Camilla and shares her complex emotions from her experiences as a sex worker working the streets of Paris in 1930s. Each poem captures the personal and honest feelings of soulmates\, but they are also medicine songs written in collaboration with the Spirits of Metro Vancouver to heal the wounds of these lands and empower the souls of noble female warriors. \nThe Sechelt Spirits consider this play as one of the final exams Alexander and Eurydice must pass to complete their four-year shamanic education. \nAbout Authors \nAlexander & Eurydice are two souls of one two-spirited soul-being on the path of ascension to become a spiritual guide of death\, who chose to separate into a masculine and feminine soul eight centuries ago to experience the deepest states of grief available to humans. Now\, they have arrived in their final life on Earth\, merging to live in Alexander’s body\, as they complete their evolutionary journey. During the play\, Alexander completely surrenders his body to Eurydice so she can tell the story of Eloise in her own words and explore the complexities of their essence as she presents her feminine truth through a masculine body.

SUMMARY:Writer's Fest: My Pictures\, My Words
DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating two new graphic memoirs by Chinese Canadian/American authors. Teresa Wong’s All Our Ordinary Stories and Tessa Hulls’ Feeding Ghosts enlighten us through their pictures and words\, exploring multigenerational stories of immigration\, identity and family. \nThe event will be moderated by Petti Fong\, journalist and author of Alone Together. \nPresented in Partnership with the Vancouver Writers Fest. \nAuthor signings will follow\, and books will be available for sale at Foo Hung Curios. \nABOUT TERESA WONG \nTeresa Wong is the author of the graphic memoir All Our Ordinary Stories (2024) and Dear Scarlet (2019)\, a finalist for The City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Book Prize and longlisted for CBC Canada Reads. Her comics have appeared in The Believer\, The New Yorker\, McSweeney’s and The Walrus. A teacher of memoir and comics at Gotham Writers Workshop\, she was also the 2021–22 Canadian Writer-in-Residence at the University of Calgary. \nABOUT TESSA HULLS \nTessa Hulls is an artist/writer/adventurer illuminating the connections between the present and the past. As the mixed-race daughter of two first-generation immigrants who landed in a tiny town of 350 people\, she grew up with no models of how she fit within American culture. Her family didn’t have TV\, and the internet didn’t yet exist\, so she spent her formative years reading her way through the public library and roaming alone through the hills with a backpack full of books (she still does this). This fusion of solitude\, research\, and forward motion remains the bedrock of her multidisciplinary creative practice.

SUMMARY:Ridge
DESCRIPTION:The Firehall Arts Centre is proud to present the Vancouver premiere of Ridge from Saturday\, October 26 to Sunday\, November 3. \nOften called the “battle that made Canada\,” Vimy Ridge resulted in over 10\,000 Canadian casualties. Through direct storytelling\, verbatim theatre and live music\, Canadian folk music group The Fugitives examine misconceptions and varying perspectives around the battle\, while drawing parallels to other formative events in our nation’s past. \nA Globe and Mail “Top 10 Arts Pick” (2020)\, Ridge features inventive musical interpretations of WWI soldier songs\, which garnered a 2022 JUNO Award nomination for Best Traditional Roots Album. \nRidge is a vivid\, kinetic ride through history\, as well as an intimate\, personal examination of our connection to the past. It is a visceral work that passionately argues against the exploitation of young lives. \n“Ridge was born in Vancouver\,” says writer and performer Brendan McLeod. “It was set to premiere at the Chan Centre in March of 2020\, but was cancelled due to the pandemic. Since then\, it has played 30 theatres across Canada\, but hasn’t returned home… until now. Unfortunately\, the themes of Ridge are all too significant to contemporary times. The band and I are grateful for the opportunity to share this work with Vancouverites at the Firehall Arts Centre\, and to critically examine how political leaders have\, and continue to\, exploit young lives.”
