SUMMARY:Have Bow Will Travel
DESCRIPTION:HAVE BOW WILL TRAVEL showcases bowed string instruments from diverse cultures. Sina Ettehad\, Marjan Alekhamis\, and Mohammad Amini perform Persian fiddles – kamancheh\, kamancheh alto\, and ghaychak alto\, joined by Babak Banihoseini on Iranian drums. Lan Tung will give the world premiere of Montreal composer Tim Brady’s energetic electroacoustic work “Concerto Etude” for solo erhu (Chinese violin) and fixed media. \nCrossbridge Strings brings together all-star improvising musicians from Iranian\, Taiwanese\, Indonesian\, avant-garde\, jazz\, and western contemporary music backgrounds: Meredith Bates (violin)\, Joshua Zubot (violin)\, James Meger (bass)\, Sina Ettehad (kamancheh)\, Lan Tung (erhu & vocals)\, and Sutrisno Hartana (rebab\, suling\, vocals). \nWhile the strings weave together vibrant tapestries\, Hartana and Tung add rich colours and nuances with their unique vocals\, and bass and Indonesian drums provide a rhythmic foundation. The sounds from various genres naturally emerge and evolve\, revealing distinct characters of each instrument/player to the foreground through spontaneous orchestration and dynamic shifts. Traditional and contemporary sounds meet unexpectedly to transcend cultural/genre boundaries and demonstrate improvisation in different approaches.

Attendees can get creative at our DIY friendship bracelet station for the concert (or just for fun!)\, show off their style at the 360 video booth\, plus\, enter for a chance to win tickets to the upcoming JUNO Awards and events. Just head to the CBC Vancouver Plaza between 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for all of the fun! \nBeyond the pre-concert and pre-hockey game fun\, the event will feature live music and performances that celebrate the spirit of giving while spotlighting our city’s unique sounds and vibrant talent. \nWe are also inviting the public to be part of a small\, intimate live studio audience at the CBC Vancouver Broadcast Centre for a free special program of The Early Edition from 6:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Seats are limited\, register online. \nJoin in making this season one of generosity and hope\, supporting Food Banks B.C. SUMMARY:Rat Academy
DESCRIPTION:Pi Theatre launches this year’s Pi Provocateurs Performance Series with Rat Academy by Edmonton\, Alberta’s Batrabbit Collective\, from Thursday\, December 5 to Saturday\, December 7\, 2024. \nDo you like rats? Good. Come along with the two last Albertan rats as they teach you the ways of the rodent. Fingers\, a curmudgeonly street rat with a heart of gold is completely alone. Or so he thinks until he discovers Shrimp\, an escaped happy-go-lucky lab rat. Eager to preserve his legacy\, Fingers creates the Rat Academy to train Shrimp in the ways of the cold\, hard street rat. \nOn the syllabus: Cheese-ology\, the Art of Scaring Magpies; Stealing 101; and Advanced Tails. But their dark alleys are far from predictable\, and as the unlikely duo tries to exist in a world that hates them\, they learn that survival is nothing without love. \nInspired by Alberta’s famous 1950s anti-rat propaganda and mentored by Mump and Smoot\, this physical comedy duo will have you clutching your tail. \nThursday\, December 5 at 8:00pm (Opening Night) \nFriday\, December 6 at 8:00pm \nSaturday\, December 7 at 4:00pm \nSaturday\, December 7 at 8:00pm \nTicket Prices: $25 at www.pitheatre.com \nVenue: A secret site-responsive venue in East Vancouver (exact address will be given to ticket-holders 3 days before the event)
