SUMMARY:Cambodian Rock Band
DESCRIPTION:History and music combine in this theatrical journey. In Cambodian Rock Band\, six actor-musicians make up the cast and perform a mix of contemporary Dengue Fever hits and classic Cambodian oldies. Lauren Yee brings to vivid life the Cambodian rock scene of the ‘60s and ‘70s\, a movement cut short by the Khmer Rouge’s brutal attempt to erase the music—and musicians. \nThis darkly funny\, genre-defying play tells the story of a Khmer Rouge survivor returning to Cambodia after thirty years\, just as his daughter prepares to prosecute one of the country’s most notorious war criminals. While an onstage band brings foot-stomping hits to life\, the electric play shifts back and forth in time as the father reveals family secrets that exhibit the enduring power of music and the resilience of the human spirit.

Join Travis on an immersive ride through his life inside and outside a doomsday cult as he investigates the monsters – and friends – hiding in all our closets. \nFollow Travis’ sometimes funny\, sometimes death-defying journey\, from his origins in a doomsday cult to a life of thrill and pleasure seeking\, eventually landing somewhere in-between.

SUMMARY:The Polygon Gallery: Tranquility of Communion
DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents Tranquility of Communion\, a landmark exhibition of the late British-Nigerian photographer Rotimi Fani-Kayode’s work\, running from Feb. 28 to May 25\, 2025. This Canadian premiere brings together Fani-Kayode’s celebrated photographs alongside archival prints and previously unseen works from his student years. Fani-Kayode’s images treat same-sex\, multiracial love with a spiritual intensity\, employing symbolic language to explore themes of identity\, sexuality\, and race. Born into a prominent Nigerian family that emigrated to London in the 1960s in search of political refuge\, Fani-Kayode channeled his multifaceted identity and outsider status into a bold photographic practice that made him a prominent figure in the Black British art scene. His work left an enduring influence on contemporary art despite a career that was tragically cut short by his death in 1989\, at the age of 34. \nAdmission to The Polygon Gallery is by donation\, courtesy of BMO Financial Group.

SUMMARY:The Dance Centre presents Daina Ashbee: We learned a lot at our own funeral
DESCRIPTION:The Dance Centre presents the internationally acclaimed BC choreographer Daina Ashbee’s compelling new solo We learned a lot at our own funeral\, which examines the notion of death. \nPerformed by the Italian dancer Imara Bosco\, the choreography evokes a battle with the self: she challenges gravity\, resists the ground\, and overcomes precarious balances. Using movement\, breath and voice\, the work draws the audience – seated on all four sides of the stage – into a potent sense of ritual\, echoing the communal experience of a funeral rite. The atmospheric score incorporates sounds from nature and haunting vocalizations. \nWe learned a lot at our own funeral is a profound meditation on the strength and fragility of the body.
