SUMMARY:VIFF Live | Zappostrophe + Frank Zappa’s 200 Motels Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Time to fly your freak flag and jump into Frank Zappaland. A prodigious and prolific talent\, Zappa (1940-1993) composed\, recorded and produced more than 60 albums; music that brought to rock the complexity and sophistication of classical composition\, drawing on jazz\, blues\, pop and music concrete\, but leavened with a surreal and satiric wit. \nAhead of his time\, Zappa also directed music videos and the feature 200 Motels (with Tony Palmer)\, a free-form rock tour riff with Keith Moon as a hot nun and Ringo Starr playing a dwarf Zappa that was shot on videotape in just 10 days. It’s a cult curio that revels in its own sense of possibility. Before the movie\, enjoy a set of Zappa tunes resurrected and reimagined by the electrifying Zappostrophe\, an eclectic 8-piece band who channel surf FZ’s discography. \nBlair Fisher – vocals / trumpet / flute / keys\nBlair Lewis – guitar / synths / vocals / rubber chicken\nLJ Mounteney – vocals / kazoo\nNick Apivor – percussion / vocals\nGuenter Schulz – guitar\nCole Tinney – keyboards\nBrent Gubbels – bass\nJason Overy – drums

SUMMARY:Kasador at Portside Pub
DESCRIPTION:Kasador takes the stage in Vancouver at the Portside Pub on April 18th as part of their cross-Canada tour promoting their new EP! \nOver the past two years\, the Kingston\, Ontario band released their second full-length\, 2023’s Youth\, toured across Canada and the U.S.\, and went from a three-piece to a four-piece outfit. They hit major streaming milestones\, won awards for their music videos\, been getting regular spins at XM radio\, and scored spots on national Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts—the sort of success every rock band dreams of. \nBut as much as they’re interested in success\, Kasador — vocalist/guitarist Cameron Wyatt\, guitarist Thomas Draper\, bassist Boris Baker\, and drummer Stephen Adubofuor — are interested in simply being a great rock and roll band in a time when connection\, friction\, and unpredictability are whittled away in favor of algorithmically dictated sameness. What is left when everything feels and looks and sounds good? Why do we idolize the rich assholes picking our pockets? \n‘Golden’\, ‘Cut It’ and ‘Revolution No.10’ —undoubtedly the heaviest music Kasador has released to date — is a taste of a new collection of 10 songs to be released in 2025\, across two EPs. Recorded at the Bathouse Recording Studio with engineer Nyles Spencer and written with a group of friends and longtime collaborators\, the tracks evidence a new era for Kasador: More than ever\, they’re committed to loud\, catchy\, confrontational guitar music as a weapon against corporate power\, plutocracy\, and our great collective numbness. This is the clearest and most direct they’ve ever been. Uncoincidentally\, it’s also the most fed-up they’ve ever been\, and they’re not pulling any punches. \nKasador has perfected their sound with this new material: It’s tender and carefully considered\, but also raw and wild and burnt around the edges\, a sonic and compositional thumbprint that nods to classic and alternative rock history while pushing into something new\, something exciting.

SUMMARY:Pride & Prejudice
DESCRIPTION:Follow the outspoken Elizabeth Bennet\, whose determination not to bow to the societal pressure of marriage is challenged by the charmingly handsome\, mildly amusing and remarkably ubiquitous Mr. Darcy. With fast-paced staging and seamless character switches\, this production promises a hilarious and heartwarming frolic for long-time Jane Austen fans and newcomers alike. Don’t miss out on the wit\, whimsy and romance – a highly entertaining tale for audiences twelve years of age and older. \nKnown for her inventive and feminist take on literary classics\, Hamill brings new life to Pride & Prejudice with a delightful reimagining that embraces the wit and social critique of Austen while making the story accessible to a modern audience with its screwball comedy and galloping pace.

SUMMARY:VIFF Live | Biboye Onanuga Plays Monk + Thelonious Monk: Straight\, No Chaser Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Returning to the VIFF stage\, Biboye Onanuga\, presents: ’The Music of Monk’. The Edmonton-based drummer is joined by an iconoclastic ensemble of Vancouver musicians Quincy Mayes (piano)\, Jodi Proznick (bass)\, and John Nicholson (tenor) for an evening of Monk tunes and arrangements before the 1988 documentary Thelonious Monk: Straight\, No Chaser. \n“The key to swing jazz is to swing it.” Monk’s words are often top of mind when I play this music — “Jazz”. One of the beautiful things about this musical tradition is the ability for an individual’s essence to unravel through their playing. Their touch\, feel\, interpretations\, etc . . . they reveal a person. And while technical skill and ability may be heard\, “a genius is the one most like himself” (Monk) — their sound is felt. I am inspired by the players who seek to earnestly express themselves through the medium of music. Monk may have been the greatest of these. So we celebrate him and his contributions the best way we know how – through the music that was uniquely his own. — Biboye Onanuga \nBiboye Onanuga is a British-born\, Nigerian-Canadian drummer\, and imaginative composer. Steeped in the arts scene since high-school\, he quickly became a sought-after player – recently completing his music degree at MacEwan University and already joining nationally-recognized players such as Jim Head\, Rubim DeToledo\, Mboya Nicholson to name a few. Biboye has made meaningful contributions to his local scene through his instrumental hip-hop/jazz band (Good information)\, 3-year-tenure weekly music series (New Standards) and recent Sunday Jazz series (Daze Days). \nAbout Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser\nCharlotte Zwerin’s 1988 documentary draws on 14 hours of prime Monk footage shot by Christian Blackwood in 1967 and 1968 (“like finding the Dead Sea Scrolls of Jazz\,” enthused producer Bruce Ricker. Featuring Monk on tour in Europe\, playing in clubs\, recording\, and in interviews\, the film is supplemented with more recent interviews with band mates and the Baroness Nica de Koenigswarter\, among others.

You can choose to solve the mystery together as a team or on your own\, it’s up to you. If you want to be seated together\, it is best to purchase your tickets together and arrive early. \nYou don’t have to participate\, you can just watch the show – if you just want to watch the show just let us know. \nYou will be seated during this experience – players are seated at tables in a restaurant setting and the mystery will unfold around you. There is a stage area but the cast will also move around the room. The servers at the venue will serve you food/drinks at your table but there will also be a bar set up so you can order drinks yourself. You can get up at any time during the show as long as you are not disrupting the show and there are also two intermissions. \nThere are puzzles to solve – this is a Vancouver Mysteries experience after all! During the first intermission your table will receive a puzzle to solve – it will reveal an important clue to the mystery! \nCostumes are encouraged (but optional) – You are attending a memorial service so wear whatever that means to you. If you have questions about this get in touch. You can decide if you are friends\, colleagues\, employees or family of the deceased. \nCan you pick the murderer? During the 2nd intermission everyone has a chance to vote for the suspect they think is the murderer. \nTime – Arrive at 6:30PM for drinks. Order your dinner and perhaps get assigned a role! Showtime: 8PM Extend you night out\, show your event confirmation and get 15% off at Stock & Supply on the lobby level: make reservations at Stock & Supply for before or after the show here. \nDelta Hotels Marriott Location – 550 West Hastings Street (3 minute walk from Waterfront Station) \nPrice – $110 per person (plus fees\, taxes and gratuity). From the infectious rhythms of The Supremes to the timeless melodies of Stevie Wonder\, Dos Santos brings the magic of Motown to life with her powerhouse vocals and captivating stage presence. \nDos Santos adds\, “I’ve been listening to Motown music my whole life\, and one of the biggest connections I have is to Stevie Wonder and his music. When I was four years old\, I was reading the record jacket to ‘Part-Time Lover’ and learning every word. People would often compare me to Diana Ross and there was always the connection there – culturally\, visually\, and musically – to Motown music for me growing up\, so playing this music is such an honour and feels like it’s a part of me that gets to kind of pay it forward.”

SUMMARY:Henna Night II / Shabe Kheena II
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver’s Iranian Visual Arts (VIVA) Alliance announces the launch of a new venue\, Medias Res Gallery\, with the opening of an inaugural exhibition by Hangama Amiri. Henna Night II / Shabe Keena II\, on view from March 27– May 2\, 2025\, marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in British Columbia. The 1\,800-square-foot gallery in Railtown is the new programming hub for VIVA Alliance and a platform for diverse communities to connect. Shabe Kheena/Henna Night features a new large-scale commission and selected works from Amiri’s ongoing series by the same name\, comprised of intricately sewn textile wall hangings that depict scenes from a traditional Afghan pre-wedding ceremony\, in which the bride’s loved ones prepare her for the big day. Amiri works primarily with textiles to explore themes of home\, gender\, social norms\, and the impact of geopolitical conflict on women’s lives\, particularly in Afghanistan and its diaspora.
