SUMMARY:Tinariwen
DESCRIPTION:10 albums and over 45 years into their storied career\, Tuareg musical pioneers and Grammy-winners Tinariwen are returning to their roots. Fierce advocates for their people’s nomadic culture that exists in the desert borderlands between Mali and Algeria\, Tinariwen’s bluesy\, guitar-driven music has found global acclaim over the past two decades for its lively blend of Tamasheq-language politicism\, syncopated rhythms and soaring melody. On Hoggar\, their tenth album\, they now stake their claim as elders of this Tuareg musical tradition\, going back to their early years of songwriting with acoustic guitars and communal singing around the desert campfire\, while also passing the torch onto a younger generation of featured musicians who can continue to keep the flame of rebellion and defiance alive. \nTypically choosing to record their albums among the arid flatness of the Central Saharan desert and tuning into the sounds of nature as they find their melodies\, recent years and the political unrest in Mali have seen the band forced to find new locations for their creativity. Founding members of the band have relocated to Algeria and when it came to making their tenth record\, they found a new home in a studio set up by younger Tuareg band Imarhan in the southern city of Tamanrasset. \nCo-presented with MODO-Live

SUMMARY:Love (Manipulated)
DESCRIPTION:The Baldersons\, a tough-as-nails producer and her artsy director husband known for sultry low-budget sci-fi movies\, are making the leap into romantic comedy. But during rehearsal for their autobiographical love story\, they clash over the details of an alleged affair. They begin subjecting the poor actors playing them to increasingly biased recreations of the same ridiculous breakup scene\, luring the lovestruck leads into a four-way battle for truth\, validation\, and one ultimate question: who is manipulating who? \nFrom hit writer Gordon Woolvett\, Love (Manipulated) is straight from lived experience: “It is somewhat of a true story! Years ago\, I was cast in the lead role in a film whose director and producer were going through a divorce. You can imagine what being on set was like: a tempestuous couple on the edge of disaster trying to make a movie together. It was such a nightmare that I started smoking again and was up to two packs a day by the end of the shoot. I always imagined it would make a great comedy someday. The best comedy always comes from pain”. \nStarring Kristen Seer\, Victoria Souter\, Greg Rogers\, and Sam Hall\, Love (Manipulated) is a hilarious\, and heartfelt one-of-a-kind romcom that pushes the boundaries of love and heartbreak\, with more drama than a telenovela! \nThursday Sept 10 – 8:40pm\nSaturday Sept 12 – 2:30pm\nSunday Sept 13 – 9:15pm\nThursday Sept 17 – 7:00pm\nSaturday Sept 19 – 7:20pm\nSunday Sept 20 – 2:15 pm

SUMMARY:anaiis
DESCRIPTION:anaiis makes the kind of music that speaks to an innate sense of wonder. Her songs explore transformation\, connection\, and the possibilities that emerge when we embrace change with curiosity and grace. \nHer latest album\, Devotion & The Black Divine\, named one of the top Albums of the Year by both BBC and Apple Music\, is a meditation on the natural world\, our inner selves\, and the power of recognizing one’s own divinity. Recorded live-to-tape in London\, the work is deeply influenced by anaiis’ new experience as a mother. She embraces softness as strength\, and the self as ever-changing. With her “gorgeous voice” that “expertly shifts from a restrained falsetto to a deep\, rich alto” (Pitchfork)\, anaiis explores what it means to be unabashedly human. \nBorn in Toulouse and raised between Dakar\, Dublin\, and Oakland\, anaiis brings a distinctly global perspective to her music. With each new release\, she traces a lineage of diasporic collaboration and cross-cultural kinship. She arrives at the Chan Centre for her Canadian debut with gentle\, powerful music\, creating a world where the ego is left outside and fear gives way to possibility. Step inside\, there’s room for all of us.
