SUMMARY:Bannock Bake Sale
DESCRIPTION:Jillian\, founder of The Métis Bannock Queen\, grew up in Fort McMurray\, Treaty 8\, a First Nation territory in northwestern Canada. Till today\, she reminisces about eating her grandfather’s bannock straight out of the oven\, covered with jam\, butter and honey. \nWhen Jillian first moved to Vancouver eighteen years ago\, her mother gave her a recipe book. Inside it were notes and recipes handwritten by her grandfather. Amongst the pages was his personal recipe for bannock. While her grandfather passed away in 2019\, Jillian still uses his recipes to carry on that legacy. Today\, she experiments with a variety of flavour combinations\, with many seasonal options such as fresh berries in the summer and cinnamon and apples in the fall. \nJillian initially started making bannocks during the pandemic as a way of fundraising for the not-for-profits in the lower mainland. It was her way of giving back to the community and sharing a piece of her Métis culture through her grandfather’s legacy. DESCRIPTION:Pi Theatre\, as part of its Provocateurs Series\, is pleased to present Deafy from Friday\, November 24 to Sunday\, November 26\, 2023 at the VIFF Studio Theatre (1181 Seymour Street\, Vancouver). \nDeaf public speaker\, ‘Nathan Jesper’\, has arrived at his venue desperately late. As he launches into his speech\, he soon realizes that things are not what they seem. \nA new play by Deaf artist Chris Dodd\, Deafy skillfully combines ASL\, surtitles\, and the spoken word to weave together a tragicomedy that takes the audience on an unexpected journey of discovering what it really means to belong. \nChris Dodd is a Treaty 6 (Edmonton)-based award-winning Deaf actor\, playwright\, accessibility advocate\, and Governor General Innovation Award finalist. He is the founder and artistic director of SOUND OFF\, Canada’s national festival devoted to Deaf performance. Chris holds a degree from the University of Alberta’s Drama program and has been working within Edmonton’s theatre community\, and across Canada\, for over 25 years. \nDeafy recently toured Ontario and was presented as part of Highwire Series at Citadel Theatre’s 2022/23 season. The play was recently published by Playwrights Canada Press as part of the anthology\, “Interdependent Magic: Disability Performance in Canada”. In 2019\, Chris received the Guy Laliberté Prize for innovation and creative leadership by the Canada Council for the Arts.

The In-Person screenings and events will take place at the VIFF Vancity Theatre and Studio Theatre. \nThe #VIBFF23 All Access Online Pass gives access to the entire ONLINE programming is $45 (+ tx/fees). All Access In-person Pass is $39 (+ tx/fees) IN-PERSON\, single tickets for films are available for $12\, and $20 for the Opening Night film.
