DESCRIPTION:Signals Creative Tech Expo 2025 returns as an essential destination for storytelling with immersive and interactive technology. Co-presented by DigiBC and the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF)\, this year’s expo from October 3-12 explores our connection to land\, history\, and human rights while confronting issues from authoritarianism to AI ethics. \nOur newly-expanded showcase presents 30+ groundbreaking projects spanning XR installations\, AI-driven art\, interactive performances\, speculative futures and playful worlds. Visitors will explore interactive and immersive works that prioritize healing over extraction\, connection over isolation\, and human agency over algorithmic control. \nLive Performance: Game\nA live\, interactive performance where audiences direct an artist through Vancouver’s streets via real-time prompts\, blurring the lines between player and observer\, performance and play. This gamified exploration of agency and surveillance transforms public space into a dynamic stage. \nLive Performance: Pop-up Carnival\nAn evening of spontaneous performances that activate the exhibition space\, transforming installations into stages for unexpected encounters. SUMMARY:Chan Centre Presents: Carminho
DESCRIPTION:Portuguese singer recognized as a standout voice in contemporary and traditional fado\, blending Brazilian bossa nova and pop. \nCarminho was born to sing. The daughter of the renowned fado singer Teresa Siqueira\, listened to her mother while she was still in her pregnant belly. Though Carminho tried to avoid her destiny as a singer\, initially pursuing a career in marketing\, she ultimately embraced her calling and chose music as her life’s work. \nSix albums and one EP later\, Carminho has become one of this generation’s greatest fado singers. Singing in both traditional and contemporary styles\, she is leading a revival of the centuries-old genre at home in her native Portugal and beyond\, sharing this deeply affecting music with the world. In 2023\, she appeared in a pivotal scene in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-nominated film Poor Things\, singing “O Quarto (Fado Menor)\,” captivating Emma Stone’s character and audiences everywhere\, and garnering her a Golden Globe nomination. That same year\, she performed for Pope Francis at World Youth Day\, singing live before a crowd of 1.5 million\, and received her first Latin Grammy nomination for her critically acclaimed album\, Portuguesa. In 2024\, she released her first EP\, Carminho at Electrical Audio\, recorded in collaboration with renowned producer Steve Albini in Chicago\, shortly before his untimely passing. Carminho is currently working on her new album\, scheduled for release this fall. \nCarminho’s singing is breathtaking to witness and her music is full of raw power\, haunting beauty\, and longing. Join us for a soul-stirring night\, exploring the depths of joy and melancholy in Carminho’s fado house.

SUMMARY:Scavenger Loops
DESCRIPTION:Scavenger Loops! Come join Patchbay and EPFC North Collectives during BC Culture Days 2025 for a fun and free exploration of the form of The Loop. \nWhat is a Scavenger Loop? A short (5-15 sec) story or sequence that cycles through beginning to end and is created from scavenged sources\, repurposing sound\, film\, images\, or text. It can be anything YOU make it! \nGuided by EPFC NORTH and PATCHBAY\, participants will have the opportunity to explore Elm Park using cameras\, audio recorders and an assortment of found objects that they will splice together in our LOOP LAB to create a short audiovisual work. EPFC NORTH will guide you into a world of analog filmmaking\, where you can learn to splice and dice 16mm footage into a new creation. PATCHBAY will mentor sound creation\, using field recording and other audio tricks to soundtrack your loop. \nLoops can be saved and taken home\, and will have the opportunity to be shared/displayed outside the fieldhouse for the duration of Culture Days! Bring a friend (or make one there!) and fuse music\, film\, and everything in between to create your very own (super) short story! \nAll ages welcome and no experience necessary! Supplies and materials are included. Feel free to bring materials of your own that you may be curious about! All’s fair in the name of The Loop. Please RSVP to let us know you’re coming.

SUMMARY:Sound Like A Sailor: Book Talk with Bruce Macdonald
DESCRIPTION:Join celebrated author\, sailor\, and artist R. Bruce Macdonald for an engaging evening exploring the colourful world of nautical language. In his latest book\, Sound Like A Sailor – The Book of Nautical Expressions\, Macdonald dives into the fascinating history behind the expressions we use every day—many of which have their roots at sea. \nDiscover how minding your p’s and q’s originates in how bartenders kept track of pints and quarts on sailors’ tabs\, how “going berserk” calls up images of shirtless Vikings\, and how the word “footloose” originally referred to an untethered sail flapping around like Kevin Bacon’s legs. Macdonald brings these phrases to life with captivating tales from the high seas and the rich tapestry of maritime history. \nMacdonald is the author of four acclaimed books\, over 200 published articles\, and a skilled artist whose works are held in collections across North America. Whether you’re a sailor\, history buff\, or simply love a good story\, this event promises insight\, laughter\, and a deeper appreciation for the language that has sailed through centuries. \nDon’t miss your chance to meet the author and get your copy signed!

SUMMARY:Long Table Dinner with Nero Tondo at the Sharing Farm

Guests will enjoy a five-course vegetarian feast celebrating the peak of the harvest\, brought to life with Devon and Lucas’ playful flavours and hyper-local ingredients. The evening begins at 6 PM with a guided farm tour\, followed by dinner at 6:30 PM. \nABOUT THE SHARING FARM \nThe Sharing Farm is a nonprofit community farm on unceded Musqueam territory in Terra Nova Park\, Richmond\, BC. Each year\, it donates over 20\,000 pounds of fresh produce to local food security programs—including the Richmond Food Bank\, the Musqueam Nation’s free farmers market\, and faith-based food initiatives\, reaching up to 2\,200 people weekly. The farm also runs a CSA program\, hosts Richmond’s annual Garlic Festival\, and operates a seasonal farmstand. \nA vibrant community hub\, the Sharing Farm offers events\, workshops\, and volunteer opportunities that bring people together to connect with the land\, sustainable agriculture\, and each other. In 2024 alone\, it engaged more than 9\,000 people through its programs and gatherings. \nABOUT DEVON AND LUCAS \nChefs Lucas Johnston and Devon Latté met at the Acorn restaurant in 2018\, instantly diving into and falling in love with the local concept. They ran the restaurant together for five years and along with the best staff in Vancouver\, collected a Michelin recommendation along with countless other accolades. They’ve been cooking together ever since and don’t plan on stopping! \nTheir food is ingredient-forward\, relying on strict hyper-locality and seasonal organic vegetables to drive their menus along with sustainably sourced seafood. You’ll also find many wild Pacific Northwest ingredients foraged and preserved by the two chefs throughout the year. Expect unique\, punchy and fun flavours! The duo opened Nero Tondo Restaurant in February 2025\, displaying an elevated yet fun approach on local cuisine.
