SUMMARY:Vacant Lot
DESCRIPTION:The Firehall Arts Centre is pleased to launch its 2025-2026 season with dance/theatre production Vacant Lot by Nelson-based choreographer\, director\, and SAG Award-winning actor Hiromoto Ida from Wednesday\, October 22 to Saturday\, October 25\, 2025. \nBased on the Japanese play “SARACHI”\, by contemporary Japanese theatre artist Shogo Ota\, a long-married couple visit the vacant lot where their house once stood. They innocently share memories of their life together\, of the house\, and of their kids. Soon after\, they realize how short this life is\, and that our existence in the universe is so fragile. \nLindsay Clague and Hiromoto Ida (Homecoming 2020; Shōgun) embody the married couple\, storytelling through movement\, dialogue\, and at times\, stillness. This work balances on the edge between spoken theatre and dance theatre\, exploring elements of both\, revealing the loneliness of human existence and our longing to connect to each other and to the universe. \nWhile the overarching themes are existential\, Vacant Lot humorously celebrates the ordinary\, undocumented moments in everyday life. \n

SUMMARY:Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson – Apt. 2B
DESCRIPTION:Unlike any other Sherlock Holmes play\, Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson – Apt. 2B follows the iconic duo as they stumble through post-pandemic life\, solving crimes with chaotic brilliance. This feminist take is a must-see for fans of Sherlock Holmes\, mystery lovers\, and anyone looking for a fun night out with friends or family this fall. \n“Last season\, audiences adored Kate Hamill’s writing in our hilarious production of Pride & Prejudice and we are excited to present another of her adaptations that blends sharp wit\, emotional truth\, and a new look at these beloved characters. It’s an ideal way to launch what promises to be a season full of incredible stories\,” said Barbara Tomasic\, Gateway Theatre Executive Artistic Director. “I love how madcap\, fast-paced and funny the show is. With a cast of four tackling more than eight roles\, it’s going to be a bloody entertaining start to our season.

SUMMARY:Chan Centre Insights | Good Things: An Evening with Samin Nosrat
DESCRIPTION:An Iranian-American chef\, author\, and educator\, renowned for her James Beard Award-winning cookbook Salt\, Fat\, Acid\, Heat\, which also inspired the acclaimed Netflix documentary series\, for the first time in Vancouver. \nSpend an uplifting evening with Samin Nosrat in Vancouver as she discusses her new book\, GOOD THINGS. Samin will share stories around the inspiration for the cookbook\, her development and selection of the recipes\, and the culinary rituals she shares with close friends. In an evening about creativity and connection\, Samin will remind us how cooking can not only nourish our bodies but also satiate our desire for kinship and community. The evening will be moderated by Helen Zaltzman\, writer and podcaster of The Allusionist and Answer Me This! \nIn 2017\, chef and writer Samin Nosrat shared her simple but revolutionary cooking philosophy with us in Salt\, Fat\, Acid\, Heat. She then adapted the lessons of the #1 New York Times Bestseller into a beloved limited series of the same name for Netflix. And during the pandemic\, she launched the Home Cooking podcast with Hrishikesh Hirway\, sharing both her depth of knowledge and her joy for cooking with fans across the world. Over the years\, Samin has become a trusted kitchen companion to millions of fans through her warm and endearing and deeply human approach to cooking\, its processes\, and its pleasures. \nOn September 16\, 2025\, Random House will publish Samin’s eagerly awaited follow-up to Salt\, Fat\, Acid\, Heat\, a cookbook titled GOOD THINGS: RECIPES AND RITUALS TO SHARE WITH THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE. GOOD THINGS offers more than 125 of her favourite recipes – simply put\, the things she most loves to cook for herself and her friends – and infuses them with her trademark blend of warmth\, creativity\, and precision. \nSigned copies will be available to purchase in a bundle with tickets\, as well as at the event itself. Book orders are organized by Book Warehouse\, Vancouver’s independent bookseller.

SUMMARY:Author Talks: Love at First Page
DESCRIPTION:Writing a book is a labour of love that often involves working through complex relationships right on the page. Join four Canadian novelists writing at the intersections of romance\, comedy and mental health as they discuss creating lovably flawed characters\, share the process of writing second chance storylines and offer their tried-and-true writing tips to emerging authors. Author meet-and-greet with book signings to follow after the event\, courtesy of bookseller Perfect Match Bookshop. \nFeaturing Natalie Sue\, bestselling author of I Hope This Finds You Well & 2025 Leacock Medal winner; Noreen Nanja\, debut author of breakout hit The Summers Between Us; Leanne Toshiko Simpson\, 2025 Kobo Prize in Romance winner for Never Been Better; and Jacqueline Firkins\, author of 5 novels – including Marlowe Banks\, Redesigned – and UBC professor & costume designer. A selection of Jacqueline’s romance cover dresses will be on display at VPL during this event. \n— \nNatalie Sue is the bestselling and award-winning author of I Hope This Finds You Well. She is a Canadian author of Iranian and British descent. She spent her formative years moving around western Canada with a brief stint in Scotland\, where she discovered her passion for storytelling as a means of connection and reading as a means of comfort. When she’s not writing\, she enjoys bingeing great and terrible TV\, attempting pottery\, and procuring houseplants. She lives in Calgary with her husband\, daughter\, and dog. \nNoreen Nanja is the author of contemporary romance debut The Summers Between Us. As a second-generation Canadian\, Noreen’s writing explores themes of identity\, race and belonging\, wrapped in stories of romantic and familial love. Born and initially raised in small-town British Columbia\, she then spent her formative years in Edmonton before moving to Montreal to pursue her Bachelors in Psychology and English Literature at McGill University and then the University of Calgary to complete her medical degree. She currently lives with her partner and her small dog in Toronto\, where she enjoys working in healthcare\, drinking vast amounts of strawberry matcha and exploring local bookshops. \nLeanne Toshiko Simpson is an award-winning writer\, educator and mental health advocate from Toronto. She writes joyful\, messy\, laugh-out-loud stories about living with mental illness and the moments of hope that help us get out of bed day after day. Leanne’s mental health rom-com Never Been Better won the 2025 Rakuten Kobo Prize for Romance. She teaches creative writing at the University of Toronto and spends her free time designing mental health greeting cards for Pebbles and Company. \nJacqueline Firkins is a writer (Marlowe Banks\, Redesigned)\, costume designer\, and lover of beautiful things. She’s on the full-time faculty in the Department of Theatre & Film at the University of British Columbia where she teaches character design\, world building\, and period costume construction courses. When not obsessing about where to put the buttons or the commas\, she can be found running by the ocean\, eating excessive amounts of gluten\, listening to earnest love songs\, and pretending her dog understands every word she says. \n***Jacqueline’s dresses (#booksasfashion) will be on display during the event and afterwards (until October 20th) through the windows of the Yosef Wosk Poet’s Corner on level 9 where the rooftop garden is. \nIn partnership with Perfect Match Bookshop (Vancouver’s first romance bookstore).

DESCRIPTION:Portuguese singer recognized as a standout voice in contemporary and traditional fado\, blending Brazilian bossa nova and pop. \nCarminho was born to sing. The daughter of the renowned fado singer Teresa Siqueira\, listened to her mother while she was still in her pregnant belly. Singing in both traditional and contemporary styles\, she is leading a revival of the centuries-old genre at home in her native Portugal and beyond\, sharing this deeply affecting music with the world. In 2023\, she appeared in a pivotal scene in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-nominated film Poor Things\, singing “O Quarto (Fado Menor)\,” captivating Emma Stone’s character and audiences everywhere\, and garnering her a Golden Globe nomination. That same year\, she performed for Pope Francis at World Youth Day\, singing live before a crowd of 1.5 million\, and received her first Latin Grammy nomination for her critically acclaimed album\, Portuguesa. In 2024\, she released her first EP\, Carminho at Electrical Audio\, recorded in collaboration with renowned producer Steve Albini in Chicago\, shortly before his untimely passing. Carminho is currently working on her new album\, scheduled for release this fall. \nCarminho’s singing is breathtaking to witness and her music is full of raw power\, haunting beauty\, and longing.
