SUMMARY:Julian Lage Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Hailed as one of the most gifted guitarists of his generation and “one of the highest category of improvising musicians\,” (The New Yorker) Julian Lage has spent decades exploring the many strains of American music with boundless curiosity and technical mastery. With roots tangled up in jazz\, folk\, classical\, and country music\, Lage brings what The New York Times calls “a disarming spirit of generosity” to his playing\, approaching tradition as an open field for invention. \nA lifelong musician\, Lage emerged early as a singular talent. He learned the guitar at age five and was already playing onstage with Carlos Santana at eight. That same year\, he was the subject of the short documentary Jules at Eight\, showcasing his prodigious talents\, performed for the Grammy Awards as a preteen\, and later joined Gary Burton’s quartet at just 16. Rather than resting on early acclaim\, Lage has continually evolved\, recording widely as a leader and collaborating with artists including John Zorn\, Fred Hersch\, Nels Cline\, and Chris Eldridge. \nFor this concert\, he performs music from his newest album Scenes from Above\, with bassist Jorge Roeder\, drummer Kenny Wollesen\, and renowned keyboardist John Medeski. Though conceptualized by Lage\, Scenes from Above is not about him as bandleader. Instead\, he is firmly rooted as a band member within the quartet\, resulting in nine tracks that frame a brilliantly open experience. The four dazzling players give and take space in equal measure as they explore these songs in one space\, in real time. \nWitness the genius of Julian Lage live in Vancouver for an unforgettable experience. \nThis event is co-presented with Infidels Jazz as part of the VANJAZZ ’26 Jazz Festival

SUMMARY:An Evening with Zadie Smith
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a captivating conversation with Zadie Smith\, one of the most prolific writers of her generation\, whose work has helped shape the literary landscape for over two decades. \nTwo of Smith’s novels\, White Teeth and NW\, have been named among the best books of the 21st century by the New York Times and Kirkus\, the former published when she was just 24. Her latest novel\, The Fraud\, was named Best Book of 2023 by both the New Yorker and Publishers Weekly\, while Dead and Alive\, her most recent collection of essays\, was included on TIME’s list of must-read books of 2025. Whether writing on class\, race\, culture\, art\, or politics\, Smith captivates readers around the world with her singular voice. \nSmith’s novels have won major awards including the Commonwealth Writers Prize\, Jewish Quarterly Wingate Prize\, and Orange Prize\, among others\, while her play The Wife of Willesden won a Critics’ Circle Theatre Award. She has been honoured with the Langston Hughes Medal\, the St. Louis Literary Award\, and the Bodley Medal. \nPraised for her “boisterous narrative intelligence; ear for dialogue; [and] chronic absence of boring sentences\,” (The Guardian) few writers are as consistently dazzling as Smith. Don’t miss this intimate evening with one of the most celebrated voices in contemporary literature.

SUMMARY:Palace
DESCRIPTION:Palace have been making music together for over a decade. What started out as carefree jam sessions between Leo Wyndham\, Rupert Turner and Matt Hodges in an airless studio in North London established a DIY ethos that remains intrinsic to the spirit of the band to this day. \nIn early 2025\, Palace took a career leap releasing the Greyhound EP on their own label\, Palace Presents – a collective they’d started in 2016 as a monthly night at The George Tavern in East London\, which had quietly grown into something more intentional. A positive and protected space as Leo described it\, away from the usual constraints of the music industry. \n“Kid” was released in April 2026\, together with the announcement of a 30-date tour of the USA and Canada in the Fall of 2026\, culminating in a show at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. \n“Kid is about longing for a child an ocean away. It’s the ache we feel for our people when we’re separated from them. It doesn’t feel like a sadness or heaviness\, but more an affirmation of that love\, a primal release sung into the sunset as the road flies by.” \nJoin us for Palace’s Chan Centre debut and experience their immersive sound brought to life on our stage.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Fran Lebowitz
DESCRIPTION:Fran Lebowitz is the world’s most beloved cultural critic. \nWith her acerbic takes on everything from how many children in a restaurant is too many (her answer: one) to hiking (“the most stupid thing I could ever imagine”) to even herself (“Success didn’t spoil me\, I’ve always been insufferable”)\, Lebowitz transforms irritation into art. \nIn the 1970s\, Lebowitz worked odd jobs like taxi driving\, belt peddling\, and apartment cleaning (“with a small specialty in Venetian blinds”) before being hired by Andy Warhol as a columnist for Interview. Her first book\, a collection of essays titled Metropolitan Life\, was a bestseller\, as was her second\, Social Studies. By turns ironic\, facetious\, deadpan\, sarcastic\, and wry\, Lebowitz’s prose is wickedly entertaining. \nThough she does not believe she has the talents to be an actor\, Lebowitz portrayed judges on Law & Order and in The Wolf of Wall Street (“Yes\, I played a judge – because I am a judge”). She also starred in the limited documentary series Pretend It’s a City\, directed by Martin Scorsese\, which was nominated for a 2021 Emmy for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series. \nIn a world of hyper-trends and endless upheaval\, Lebowitz remains a steady fixture of unfiltered\, endlessly entertaining candour. With her signature Levi’s and men’s suit jackets\, she has become an icon of divine judgement. We invite you to revel in it as she returns to the Chan Centre.
