Performed by Matt Luck and world-renowned B-Boy RubberLegz\, celebrated for his ability to contort his body into unthinkable shapes and for the groundbreaking style that earned him international acclaim\, this work is a charged exploration of power\, tension\, and transformation on stage. \nThe final two days of OUROFEST will include a series of masterclasses with TARANTISM and RubberLegz\, and professional development workshops for dancers. \nFestival Highlights\nThursday\, Nov 13 — Opening Social at KW Studios (SoulFunk Collective + exhibition battles) in Vancouver. \nFriday\, Nov 14 — Mainstage at Massey Theatre (New Westminster)\, featuring TARANTISM (Greece/UK)\, Cristina Bucci (Burnaby)\, and Joanne Park (Vancouver). \nSaturday\, Nov 15 — Mainstage at Massey Theatre\, featuring RubberLegz (Germany / LA) and Matt Luck (BC)\, Casual Gay Funk (Vancouver)\, and Lewen Han (Vancouver)\, followed by a dance party with DJ Ice B at The Massey. \nSunday\, Nov 16 — Masterclasses at Q7 Studios with RubberLegz and TARANTISM\, followed by a Q&A with both artists. \nMonday\, Nov 17 — A professional development workshops for dancers on administration\, finance\, and nutrition. \nOUROFEST is presented with generous partnership from Massey Theatre\, and receives support from The Canada Council for the Arts\, BC Arts Council\, Metro Vancouver\, and The City of Vancouver. \nLearn more and buy tickets: https://show.ourocollective.com/ourofest-1/

SUMMARY:Between Breaths | Firehall Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:The Firehall Arts Centre is proud to present the Western Canadian premiere of Between Breaths from Wednesday\, November 12 to Sunday\, November 23\, 2025. \nInspired by a true story\, Between Breaths is a profound play that sails through the extraordinary life of Dr. Jon Lien – known to many as “The Whale Man” – who devoted his career to saving whales trapped in fishing nets off the coast of Newfoundland. Over the years\, he rescued more than 500 whales\, bridging the divide between science and the local fishing community with empathy and respect. But as the play traces Dr. Lien’s legacy\, it also reveals his most personal struggle: a battle with dementia that slowly threatened the very core of his identity. \nSet to a hauntingly beautiful live score by celebrated Newfoundland indie folk trio The Once\, Between Breaths is a powerful meditation on memory\, loss\, and the deep connections that endure even as everything else fades. It is a play about hope\, endings\, and the human spirit’s quiet resistance against disintegration.

SUMMARY:Oscar: Homage to the Rebel Maestro of Flamenco
DESCRIPTION:“Oscar” tells the story of the spectacular life and flamenco works of dancer\, choreographer and maestro Oscar Nieto\, brought to life by the professional flamenco dancers he mentored throughout his storied career and the musicians with whom he has shared the stage. “Oscar” features an award-winning cast of five dancers\, two guitarists\, two singers and a percussionist performing a selection of Oscar Nieto’s most treasured dance and music works. Spanning from the early 1970s to the present\, these choreographies are interspersed with archival material and stories from Oscar’s own life — from his youth working the fields from Texas to Los Angeles\, to his years touring internationally with Jose Greco\, Lola Montes\, and Antonio’s Ballet Siluetas\, to his decades in Vancouver\, where he continues to build a rich and inclusive community of talented and joyful flamenco artists and aficionados. \n“Oscar” is a work of love\, created in collaboration with artists he has mentored\, in celebration of all that he has given the flamenco and dance communities of Canada\, and in close collaboration with Oscar himself. A nationwide community of artists\, aficionados and fans will gather in Vancouver to celebrate this truly remarkable man.

SUMMARY:Faye's Room
DESCRIPTION:Faye’s Room is the story of Faye Murphy\, an autistic lesbian who works at a queer cafe… and happens to have the power to summon and hide in a magical sensory room at will. When she becomes trapped in this room with her least favourite co-worker\, son of the founder and token heterosexual Chase McLure\, an unlikely bond forms\, and the two find themselves with a bit more in common than they had thought. \n“Faye’s Room marks a long list of firsts for us\,” says Co-Artistic Director\, Adam Grant Warren. “It’s our first play as Glitch Theatre\, and the first mainstage production we’ve put up since the pandemic. It’s Alex’s first produced work\, and the first time we’ve backed a D/disability-identified playwright with a team of a majority of neurodiverse directors\, designers\, and cast. That kind of representation – artists with lived experience of D/disability leading from multiple key positions and embedding access practice in the creative process – that’s the heart of Glitch Theatre. And Faye’s Room felt like the perfect opportunity to really embody that value right out of the gate.” \nFaye’s Room is a moving exploration of neurodivergent solidarity\, intergenerational bonds\, and internalized ableism. \nAbout Glitch Theatre: \nGlitch Theatre\, formerly known as Realwheels Theatre\, is thrilled to share its evolution with audiences and the national theatre community. Embracing a name that captures the moment of transformation\, Glitch Theatre is committed to creating works that challenge expectation\, spark innovation\, and invite new perspectives. \n

SUMMARY:Las Mujeronas at STAND Festival
DESCRIPTION:Las Mujeronas brings together a collective of Flamenco Latinas in Vancouver to explore the impact of immigration on identity\, memory\, and cultural expression. Performed in both Spanish and English\, with select texts translated for accessibility\, the work seamlessly fuses flamenco dance\, poetry\, song\, and storytelling to reflect the complex and layered experiences of migration. Drawing on the intercultural roots of flamenco\, especially the Ida y Vuelta (going and coming) song forms that travelled between Spain and Latin America\, the piece becomes a powerful act of reclaiming voice\, space\, and belonging. Through rhythm\, movement\, and lived experience\, Las Mujeronas invites audiences into a bold and intimate reimagining of home and heritage. \nAbout STAND Festival: \nA unique platform that celebrates immigrant and refugee artists’ untold stories\, vibrant talents\, and undeniable passion. Through three dynamic disciplines – Theatre\, Music\, and Dance\, the festival paints a rich tapestry of narratives\, emotions\, and experiences that transcend geographical borders. \nRecognizing the unique challenges immigrant and refugee artists face\, STAND includes an array of knowledge-sharing workshops. These curated sessions aim to empower participants\, equipping them with the tools\, insights\, and networks to navigate and thrive in their artistic journeys.

SUMMARY:Myokine
DESCRIPTION:The Firehall Arts Centre is pleased to present Anne Plamondon Productions’ Myokine from Thursday\, October 30 to Saturday\, November 1\, 2025. \nMyokine is inspired by molecules released by the muscles during physical effort\, associated with the regeneration of body and mind. The piece explores the connection between movement\, hope\, urgency and resilience\, while revealing how light and shadow respond to\, oppose\, and nourish each other. In a world sometimes perceived as dark\, the choreography draws luminous bursts that can only exist at the heart of darkness. \nThe performers become architects\, protectors and messengers of a vital breath\, seeking and sharing moments of clarity that pierce the gloom. For Anne Plamondon\, these “molecules of hope” embody the body’s and dance’s salvatory role in the face of our era’s upheavals. Movement becomes an outlet\, a place to welcome our vulnerabilities and transform them into a shared strength. \nDriven by a hypnotic score and a passionate Canadian cast\, Myokine celebrates the power of dance and the vitality of togetherness. A physical\, luminous and profoundly human work\, it reminds us that light only finds its full meaning in the midst of shadow — and that the moving body can heal\, unite\, and restore a sense of purpose.
