SUMMARY:Sophie Lui: Chinatown Stories of Perseverance and Pride
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation of Sophie Lui’s video\, “Chinatown Stories of Perseverance and Pride”\, an exploration of some of the history that shaped the community – and a look at the future through the eyes of those who love the neighbourhood. \nThe future of Vancouver’s Chinatown has been the subject of a lot of debate in recent years\, especially in the wake of the pandemic. But beyond the headlines\, Chinatown is also a place where real people live\, work and play and where history isn’t confined to a museum. Chinatown has been a refuge\, and the community has consistently pushed back against racist policies and even outright violence. \nToday\, it faces drug use and homelessness\, development and displacement – and the fear of being forgotten. \nJoin us for an honest conversation about the challenges Chinatown faces today and the future we can shape together. \nA moderated conversation with Sophie Lui\, Andy Yan\, Doris Chow\, and Henry Tsang to follow.

SUMMARY:Pretendianism
DESCRIPTION:Esteemed novelist Joseph Boyden\, acclaimed film director Michelle Latimer and former University of Saskatchewan professor Carrie Bourassa have all made front-page news in recent years for the same reason: each is alleged to have been a “pretendian.” \nThe term “pretendian” has come to refer to someone who claims distant Indigenous heritage that doesn’t stand up to deeper scrutiny. But why would someone fake an Indigenous identity? \nThat question is the premise of The Pretendians (2022)\, a documentary from The Passionate Eye and the latest film featuring Anishinaabe author and playwright Drew Hayden Taylor. The documentary follows his cross-Canada journey\, revealing what really lies behind this explosive issue. \nRating: PG / Runtime: 44 mins\nPresented in partnership with CBC Gem.\n— \nAfter the film\, join Cee Peal\, the 2026 VPL Storyteller in Residence for a discussion around Pretendianism and the harm and division that it creates in Indigenous communities. \n— \nCee Peal is a theatre artist from the Nisga’a First Nation of Northern B.C. now working in Vancouver on the traditional\, unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-waututh)\, and sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) peoples. He brings to the library his experience in storytelling\, theatre\, and image making\, drawing from his experience working as an actor\, director\, writer\, dancer\, and producer on various productions. With a passion for Indigenous studies and cultural evolution\, Cee is also the Indigenous outreach coordinator at The Cultch and the artistic associate at The Carmen Arts Group. \nTo find out more about Cee’s residency and keep up with his upcoming events visit: vpl.ca/storyteller

SUMMARY:Enemy Lines
DESCRIPTION:The Firehall Arts Centre concludes its ELBOWS UP – Made in Canada season\, an inspiring and successful celebration of bold Canadian voices and storytelling\, with Mayumi Lashbrook’s Enemy Lines from Wednesday\, May 6 to Saturday\, May 9\, 2026. \nEnemy Lines is a live dance performance that looks at how a climate of fear led to the incarceration of Japanese Canadians. Held by curiosity\, choreographer Mayumi Lashbrook looks back at the actions taken against her family during World War II. Suddenly deemed a threat after the Pearl Harbour attack in 1941\, over 22\,000 Canadians of Japanese descent were forcibly removed from the coastline of British Columbia – their lives forever altered. \nLashbrook seeks to understand these events in Canadian history and the hold it has had on her life. Her work illuminates the cycles of fear-based oppression and intolerant thinking that still afflicts us today. In Enemy Lines\, she elucidates our hardwired need for each other\, and the way that disconnection can hinder our growth. \nEnemy Lines is a tender reminder of the fractures of our collective past and the possibilities for our shared future. \n“A Must-See Performance for All Canadians”\n– The Nikkei Voice

SUMMARY:Pelmet and Sables
DESCRIPTION:Pelmet and Sables is a play by Cee Peal that is in its early developmental stages of production. Two non-human characters\, Pelmet and Sables\, cannot die because they are not living\, but they keep trying to kill each other on their journey to find out what death is\, what life means\, and what their existence is all about. \nCee will describe what is required to get a play off the ground and how to get started with the early stages of production. Bring your questions for a thoughtful discussion that will be useful for beginning playwrights.
