SUMMARY:Where Have All the Buffalo Gone?
DESCRIPTION:This compelling play by Tai Amy Grauman offers a powerful and poetic journey through pivotal moments in Métis history. This intimate\, 50-minute performance follows two souls as they traverse seven important moments in Métis history—beginning with the birth of Métis nations on the plains\, through the fur trade and the disappearance of the buffalo\, to the rise of the Métis Association of Alberta. The story weaves together historical events\, cultural memory\, and a life-like buffalo puppet to celebrate love\, loss\, resilience\, and the rich lessons carried by the buffalo. \nStaged in the intimate Studio B at Gateway Theatre\, this production uses vivid storytelling\, striking visual elements\, and dynamic physical performance to honour Métis traditions\, and sparks meaningful conversations about identity\, culture\, and belonging. Adds Barbara Tomasic\, Gateway Theatre Executive Artistic Director\, “Where Have All the Buffalo Gone? has been a huge hit across Canada\, and we are thrilled to bring this beautiful story to Gateway for our Family Day show.”

SUMMARY:Reflections of Vancouver’s Black History
DESCRIPTION:A celebration for Black History Month 2026\, led by Fade to Black Entertainment Society (FTBE). This event will highlight the visual arts\, music\, literature\, and film that have shaped Vancouver’s Black cultural landscape\, while also opening a space for dialogue and healing within our creative community. Building on FTBE’s long-standing track record of elevating Black voices through film and music\, this new focus brings Afrofuturism dialogue to the forefront\, reminding us that the arts are both mirror and medicine for the Black experience in Canada. \nArt Exhibition: The Art of Resilience – Established and emerging Black artists\, with a focus on those who have contributed to the city’s art scene yet remain under-recognized. \nKeynote Speakers: Then and Now – serving as a listening circle and sharing session with past present and future Black-led voices in the community. \nPerformances & Celebration – local musicians\, poets and influencers connecting the themes of Black art\, resistance\, and renewal. Artists from FTBE’s network including participants from BMMV and Da LuV James bringing a multi-sensory experience of rhythm and reflection. Special guest DJ Earl The Pearl will be closing out the night! \nCultural Dinner Experience – catered light dinner by the chefs at the long-standing Riddim & Spice restaurant\, celebrating the culinary commitment of our community. The meal will act as a shared table of gratitude connecting our culture through food\, conversation\, and storytelling. \nCash/Card bar will be open throughout the evening.\nEvent runs 7pm to 1am \n\nCelebrate the contributions of Black community and cultural pioneers in Vancouver\, explore a legacy establishment for Black artists and history\, engage the broader community in dialogue around equity in our contributions\, and inspire collaboration and unity within Vancouver’s fragmented Black creative scene. \nFTBE has spent years building platforms for Black storytelling through film\, music\, and cultural events often without adequate funding or the greater community support. Despite ongoing financial and social challenges\, the organization continues to create meaningful opportunities for expression and connection.

SUMMARY:Ebony Roots Concert
DESCRIPTION:This powerful concert celebration of music from the Black experience traces a 300-year journey—from work songs and spirituals to the rise of Soul\, R&B\, Blues\, and Motown. The program highlights the evolving emancipation and cultural impact of African Descent communities from a North American perspective. \nBoth entertaining and insightful\, the concert is framed with intention and meaning. It is a full music experience filled with transformative songs – all accompanied by brief contextual narratives that explores how each song or artist moved the needle forward—or\, at times\, backward—for the Black community. These unspoken stories are more of a side show\, rather than the main event\, and are shared through the digital program and stage projections. Performed by a professional ensemble of BC artists\, the concert centres Black lived experience through the centuries up to and including the civil rights movement.

SUMMARY:Maktoub | Oriental Jazz Night
DESCRIPTION:Maktoub is an original instrumental project composed and led by internationally recognized oud virtuoso Ahmed Maher. \nRooted in Arabic maqam and in conversation with jazz form\, the music unfolds through a balance of composed structures and live improvisation. Written material offers a frame\, while improvisation opens space for risk\, presence\, and collective authorship to reshape the music in real time. \nThe title maktoub\, meaning “written” or “destined” in Arabic\, names a central paradox of the work: what feels predetermined is continuously rewritten through encounter. Borders\, whether musical or cultural\, are treated not as fixed lines but as permeable spaces where new identities and shared experiences can emerge. \nRecorded between Cairo and Vancouver\, Maktoub draws from Maher’s lived experience of movement\, displacement\, and belonging. The music reflects an ongoing inner process\, where memory and immediacy coexist\, and where the idea of “home” remains fluid and evolving. \nThis performance offers a rare pre-release glimpse of the project ahead of the album launch in June 2026\, presented in an intimate setting that foregrounds listening\, interaction\, and the energy of live creation. \nFeaturing: \nAhmed Maher | Oud \nGeoff Claridge | Bass Clarinet \nConrad Good | Double Bass \nAtin Cheraghchi | Percussions
