Originating as a combination of Han and Manchu clothing styles and later influenced by Western fashion\, the garment carries layered meanings across generations and diasporas. For Canadian-born women of Chinese descent\, wearing the cheongsam can evoke tensions between desire\, fear\, wonder\, and contestation. \nDrawing from her book Wearing the Cheongsam: Dress and Culture in a Chinese Diaspora\, curator and author-scholar Cheryl Sim examines the cheongsam’s history and revival overseas\, as well as its contested meaning for Chinese Canadian women as a symbol of heritage\, traditional values\, and cultural belonging. \nFollowing the presentation\, join Cheryl Sim and Mia Wu\, owner and senior tailor at Modernize Tailors\, for a discussion on contemporary cheongsam trends\, garment production\, and cultural appropriation. \nAttendees are encouraged to wear a cheongsam to the program.

DESCRIPTION:The Richmond Museum presents the 19th annual Doors Open Richmond from June 6–7\, 2026. Visitors can explore 45 sites highlighting the city’s diverse culture and heritage\, including art studios\, historic locations\, farms\, and faith-based organizations. \nHighlights this year include going behind the scenes of the City’s geothermal energy system at the Alexandra District Energy Utility; creating your own ceramic works at the Richmond Potters Club; and exploring the four-acre historic site of London Farm\, which tells the story of farming in the city from 1880–1930. \nThe Richmond Museum will also offer two themed bus tours: “Sacred Spaces” explores places of worship\, and “Discover Doors Open” showcases three different curated partner sites each day. Their latest all original album ‘Me Daza’ was recorded in Ireland with producer Kieran Kennedy (Maria Doyle Kennedy) which features the posthumous (!) vocals of Fergus O’Farrell (Interference\, Once). There is nothing traditional about the record – or this dynamic duo. With tributes to Leonard Cohen\, John Lennon\, 50s & 60s era gold\, and what could be mistaken for a simple holiday record\, their catalog is an ever evolving\, genre-free wonder. 2023 saw them launch an all original folk opera about Pigeons(!) and the causes of housing insecurity. The Pigeon & The Dove premiered at the Vancouver Fringe Fest where they took home the prestigious Social Impact Award. In 2025 they made their US premiere in Seattle and Bellingham\, deep in the US/Canada trade war\, and are currently working on recording an album of original songs from the Pigeon for a late 2026 release.
