SUMMARY:Amour Courtois: Medieval Meets Jazz
DESCRIPTION:Amour Courtois is a bold and evocative musical project led by French jazz pianist Baptiste Bailly\, reimagining 14th-century French songs through the lens of contemporary improvisation. Inspired by the enduring emotional resonance of medieval melodies\, Bailly collaborates with Matthew Baker on the baryton and Efren López on the hurdy-gurdy and ouds\, crafting an anachronistic yet striking soundscape. Their repertoire – featuring works by Machaut\, Binchois\, and Lescurel – bridges centuries and highlights the timelessness of human expression. \nAmour Courtois treats medieval songs not as static artifacts but as living works. While the original melodies are respected as closely as possible\, with the aim of preserving their essence\, the musicians change the settings\, time signatures\, chords\, context\, and costumes. Improvised or newly written passages are integrated into the pieces\, like moments of intimate expression nourished by the eclecticism of their personalities and influences\, revealing a touching and spontaneous musical craftsmanship\, boundless and timeless.

SUMMARY:Empire of AI: Karen Hao in Conversation with Naomi Klein
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this timely talk where acclaimed author and journalist Karen Hao lays out the stakes of the most consequential tech arms race in history—and the role we all can play to ensure that AI benefits everyone. \nAI is transforming the world at breakneck speed and concentrating extraordinary power in the hands of a few. In the New York Times bestseller Empire of AI\, Silicon Valley engineer-turned-journalist Karen Hao draws from years of rare insider access to OpenAI and reporting across five continents. She offers a gripping look at how the accelerating AI revolution is reshaping society and concentrating economic and political power in the hands of a few companies. “The way we develop technology is now fundamentally broken\,” Hao says. “But I truly believe that we can fix it.” \nNamed one of TIME’s 100 most influential people in AI for “fundamentally shaping many people’s perceptions and understanding of the company at the center of the AI revolution\,” Hao’s work is a brilliant and deeply necessary look at the industry defining our era and what the future holds. \nFor this urgent conversation\, Hao will be joined by Naomi Klein\, the award-winning author of international bestsellers including This Changes Everything\, The Shock Doctrine\, No Logo\, and Doppelganger. Klein is an associate professor in UBC’s department of geography\, founding codirector of the Centre for Climate Justice\, and a columnist for The Guardian.
