SUMMARY:When Railways Were Highways: Remembering Jim Wong-Chu's Legacy
DESCRIPTION:This panel brings together writers whose creative lives were shaped by the mentorship\, advocacy\, and generosity of Jim Wong-Chu. \nFeaturing: Evelyn Lau\, Yasuko Thanh\, Jessica Gin-Jade Chan\, moderated by Julia Lin \nThis panel brings together writers whose creative lives were shaped by the mentorship\, advocacy\, and generosity of Jim Wong-Chu\, who is a foundational figure in Asian Canadian literature and cultural organizing. Long before Asian Canadian writing was institutionally recognized\, Jim and the pioneers of his generation built pathways where none existed\, transforming railways\, symbols of exclusion and labour\, into highways of connection\, storytelling\, and belonging. \nThis panel of writers reflect on how Jim nurtured emerging voices\, insisted on the importance of community over individual acclaim\, and modelled a literary practice rooted in care and cultural memory. Through personal stories\, reflections on mentorship\, and discussions of their artistic lineage\, this conversation honours Jim’s belief that writing is not only an act of expression but also a responsibility to the history and community of those who come after. \nThe panel invites audiences to consider how mentorship can be a form of resistance and how literary communities are built.

DESCRIPTION:L’Arche Greater Vancouver is delighted to host its very first Neighbourhood Party on Sunday\, June 28\, 2026\, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at David Gray Park\, located just behind our building. This is a free\, family-friendly community event\, open to everyone\, and we would love neighbours\, families\, and local partners to drop by and spend a relaxed Sunday afternoon with us. \nThe Neighbourhood Party is designed as a new annual tradition – a simple idea with a big heart: bringing people together in a shared outdoor space. Expect a welcoming park atmosphere with activities for all ages\, music\, food\, and plenty of opportunities to connect with neighbours and discover local community organizations and services. \nMore than anything\, it’s about creating space for real\, face-to-face connection – where people can slow down\, meet one another\, and strengthen the everyday fabric of neighbourhood life. \nBring your friends\, bring your family\, and come enjoy a Sunday in the park that’s all about community.

SUMMARY:A Streetcar Named Desire
DESCRIPTION:Iconic. Essential. Electric.\nPart of Ensemble Theatre Company’s 2026 Festival: Bloodlines. \nA cornerstone of 20th Century theatre\, A Streetcar Named Desire traces the unraveling of Blanche DuBois as she arrives in New Orleans to take shelter with her sister Stella and brother-in-law Stanley. Clashing realities\, desire\, and delusion collide in this emotionally charged drama\, revealing the fragility of identity and the harshness of truth in a changing world. \nIn turbulent and uncertain times\, this iconic play could not be more prescient as we witness a family moving towards new identities and fighting for their vision of the American Dream. Tennessee Williams’ play is a portrait of a woman caught between the demons of her past and prospect of a new life. \nTalkback performance July 12 after the 2:00 pm performance.\nJoin us for brunch time performances before matinee\, July 12th\, featuring singer Violet Grace.

SUMMARY:Tinariwen
DESCRIPTION:10 albums and over 45 years into their storied career\, Tuareg musical pioneers and Grammy-winners Tinariwen are returning to their roots. Fierce advocates for their people’s nomadic culture that exists in the desert borderlands between Mali and Algeria\, Tinariwen’s bluesy\, guitar-driven music has found global acclaim over the past two decades for its lively blend of Tamasheq-language politicism\, syncopated rhythms and soaring melody. On Hoggar\, their tenth album\, they now stake their claim as elders of this Tuareg musical tradition\, going back to their early years of songwriting with acoustic guitars and communal singing around the desert campfire\, while also passing the torch onto a younger generation of featured musicians who can continue to keep the flame of rebellion and defiance alive. \nTypically choosing to record their albums among the arid flatness of the Central Saharan desert and tuning into the sounds of nature as they find their melodies\, recent years and the political unrest in Mali have seen the band forced to find new locations for their creativity. Founding members of the band have relocated to Algeria and when it came to making their tenth record\, they found a new home in a studio set up by younger Tuareg band Imarhan in the southern city of Tamanrasset. \nCo-presented with MODO-Live
