SUMMARY:The Cave
DESCRIPTION:Tomson Highway\, John Millard\, and Martha Ross’s apocalyptic cabaret\, The Cave\, comes to Vancouver with new and magical animations by Bruce Alcock. A group of animals flee from a vicious forest fire and seek refuge in Bear’s cave. Waiting out the inferno\, they reflect on their lives\, their lost garden\, and their impending doom. These unlikely and singed bedfellows share their stories and take comfort in their newfound community while the fire encroaches. \nAt times comical\, at times dramatic and tragic\, the evening is hosted by a wry and charming MC played by the composer\, Millard himself. The four performers sing seventeen stirring songs in English and Cree\, playing abstractions of Bear\, Moose\, Beaver\, Skunk\, Snake\, Wolf\, Crow\, and Fox. The cabaret band supports the style with wild\, beautiful\, poignant\, and entertaining orchestrations. \nPart Nightclub\, part Cave\, the show stimulates discussion about our planet’s precarious survival in the context of exceptional art\, offering an affirmative and cathartic experience. It is a sublime assemblage of multidisciplinary art\, showcasing what makes Canada astounding and unique on the international arts landscape. The Cave is as entertaining as its themes are timely and has audiences leaping to their feet.

SUMMARY:The Frontliners - Vancouver Fringe Festival Presents
DESCRIPTION:Late January 2016\, Canada is in the throes of resettling the first wave of 25\,000 Syrian refugees. As three frontline workers battle Vancouver’s housing crisis to move families out of an East Van hotel\, their lives are brought together in ways that irreversibly shape them. \nAs the workers pull overtime hours to settle families against an impossible rental market\, they must also navigate a frenzy of journalists\, overly-keen do-gooder groups\, bureaucracy\, an impossible amount of donations\, angry landlords\, internet trolls\, and the hopes and wishes of families themselves\, all of which chaotically\, tragically\, and comedically intersect with the frontlines. \nThe Frontliners is the winner of Playwrights Theatre Centre’s New Play in Development Prize 2022. Also\, The Frontliners was the recipient of the national 2021 Playwrights Guild of Canada RBC Emerging Playwright Award\, Theatre BC’s 2020 Play of Special Merit Award\, and was the runner-up for the prestigious 2021 National Voaden Prize in Playwriting. \n“Captures\, with economy\, humour\, and heart\, the intense rollercoaster ride of working in a refugee placement agency during a housing crisis.” — Voaden Prize in Playwriting \nWritten by: Zahida Rahemtulla\nDirected by: Tanya Mathivanan

SUMMARY:Animal
DESCRIPTION:Animal is a high-energy circus party for all ages. Cirque Alfonse takes us on a journey of discovery through a series of slightly surreal farm fables served up with a touch of irreverence\, impressive virtuosity and the company’s familiar comic touch. In this re-invented agricultural world\, the farm is turned upside down! \nA gentleman farmer has surrounded himself with some familiar but slightly outlandish creatures: the chickens have teeth\, the ducks are slightly menacing\, and the cows are kicking up a fuss. In this “farm fantasy”\, the imagination conjures up stories from childhood\, rural life proves to be both energetic and poetic and clichés are joyfully turned on their head. \nYet again\, the clan of family and friends that make up Cirque Alfonse has favoured its multidisciplinary approach where circus\, song\, dance and theatre all come together\, driven by original live music…an irresistible mix of trad and soul that the troupe calls ‘agricultural funk’!

SUMMARY:Intro to Local Cloth
DESCRIPTION:What does cloth look and feel like when it’s entirely grown and produced within Metro Vancouver? What are the colours and textures of this place? Spend an evening with Asparagus and EartHand Gleaners Society to start learning the answers to these questions. \nWe will gather in the EartHand Learning Garden and outdoor studio at Trillium Park in Strathcona. Small pods will move around the garden and work areas. Participants will meet some of the artists who work with EartHand Gleaners\, and try out (or see demonstrated) the techniques that go into making cloth from the land: a natural dye pot made with seasonal bounty; processing wool\, flax\, or nettles; as well as spinning and weaving. Feel free to pack a picnic! \nTo keep this event as accessible as possible\, we are offering registrations on a “pay what you will” scale. The opportunity to learn from EartHand is absolutely worth paying for\, but we understand that not everyone has funds available for this kind of experience. Please register at the price point that’s appropriate for you at this time. (PST will be added at checkout.) \nAll participants will receive a free copy of Asparagus Magazine to take home. \nAccessibility Information \nPlease dress for the weather. Most activities are under shade or rain tents as required\, and will be modified as necessary\nPathways and studio/garden sites are gravel screening or wood chipped flat terrain.\nPublic washrooms are available in the fieldhouse building nearby. \nNote: The Trillium garden is where most of the nettle was grown for the jacket made by Sharon Kallis\, which was featured in an article by Jadine Ngan in the Spring 2022 issue of Asparagus Magazine.
