SUMMARY:Vancouver Civic Theatres Silent Movie Mondays: Safety Last (1923)
DESCRIPTION:Escape to the 1920s silent movie era at the Orpheum theatre! Vancouver Civic Theatres is thrilled to present Silent Movie Mondays\, an immersive experience that screens popular silent films accompanied by dramatic music played live on the historic Wurlitzer organ – the last theatre organ in Canada still performing in its original home. \nA boy (Harold Lloyd) moves to New York City to make enough money to support his girlfriend (Mildred Davis) but soon discovers that making it in the big city is harder than it looks. When he hears that a store manager will pay $1\,000 to anyone who can draw people to his store\, he enlists his friend\, the “human fly” (Bill Strother)\, to climb the building as a PR stunt and split the profits. But\, when his pal gets in trouble with the law\, he must complete the crazy stunt on his own. \nFollowing each show\, Vancouver Film School will host a lively discussion of the movie and the role of silent films in the evolution of film history. Prepare for a special surprise at the screening of Safety Last\, with the appearance of Suzanne Lloyd\, granddaughter of the film’s lead actor\, Harold Lloyd – widely considered among the most influential comedians of the silent film era. \nTickets on sale on March 14 at 10 am from Ticketmaster.
