SUMMARY:Celebrating 10 Years of Queer as Funk: Vancouver Pride Weekend Kickoff!
DESCRIPTION:As the tenth anniversary of Vancouver-based funk and soul band Queer As Funk approaches\, anticipation builds for a milestone celebration that promises to captivate hearts and minds. The band has been a transformative force within the 2SLGBTQI+ community\, using their music as a catalyst for joy\, acceptance\, and social justice. \nOn August 4th\, Queer As Funk will take to the stage at the Commodore Ballroom to mark a decade of spreading queer joy and positivity through their music. The band intends to use the performance as an opportunity to gather the queer community and allies to lead with love\, especially in the face of rising discrimination against trans and queer folks. \nAt its core\, Queer As Funk was born from a desire to celebrate diversity\, using music as a tool to spread that positivity throughout the community. As one of the few predominantly queer and non-binary bands in the province\, their shows are not only dynamic and entertaining\, but a powerful statement of pride and identity. \nThroughout their ten-year history\, Queer As Funk has been dedicated to visiting small communities to provide celebration and visibility to queer individuals looking to gather\, connect\, and strengthen their communities. They aim to inspire queer youth by offering themselves as models for living full\, joyful lives as successful queer adults\, and; as the band’s love for one another is palpable in performances\, models for celebrating queer friendship\, love\, and chosen family. \nAlongside their commitment to social justice\, Queer As Funk has also earned a reputation as a powerful and entertaining band. Their tight horn arrangements\, groovy rhythms\, and powerful vocals have won over fans at music festivals and Pride events across Canada. \nFor their tenth-anniversary celebration\, Queer As Funk will be joined by special guests Marcus Mosely (of The Sojourners) and Beau Wheeler. Tickets are available for $39.75 + fees\, and the show will begin at 8pm. \nIn a time when the queer and trans community is still facing discriminatory attitudes and policies\, Queer As Funk remains a beacon of hope and inspiration. This anniversary celebration promises to be a night of love\, joy\, and powerful music\, as the band showcases ten years of triumphant dedication to uplifting the 2SLGBTQI+ community.

SUMMARY:Between Blade & Bullet: A Discussion with Margaret Franz
DESCRIPTION:Mary was the only peace officer in the history of penal institutions in Canada to offer up her life in the service of her country. Penitentiary in New Westminster\, BC\, that Mary volunteered to be the principal hostage and lost her life in the process. \nThe story of Mary Steinhauser is told by her sister Margaret Franz in the book “Between Blade and Bullet: The Mary Steinhauser Story”. At our next speaker series event\, join the VPMA in a discussion with Margaret Franz as she talks about her heroic and courageous sister Mary Steinhauser (1942-1975). \nPart of the Vancouver Police Museum and Archives Speakers Series\, join Margaret for an intimate discussion on the impact of her sister’s life and her ultimate sacrifice\, and Margaret’s experience of writing Between Blade & Bullet. Taking place on Thursday July 27th\, we will commence at 6:00pm. Tickets are $20.00 and include admission to the Museum. The event will conclude at 8:00pm. SUMMARY:WIRTH Hats Quad Tandem World Championships
DESCRIPTION:On July 15-23\, 2023\, Vancouver-based brand WIRTH Hats will host the Quad Tandem World Championships. The one-of-a-kind adventure race\, which is the first of this scale for the company\, will draw teams from around the world to compete on quad tandem (four-person) bikes for a grand prize: The Quad Cup. \nThe Quad Tandem World Championships is the ultimate team race and a mental health fundraiser for the WIRTH Hats Counselling Fund. During this year’s event\, six teams will cycle over 800 kilometres\, from Keremeos to Nelson\, B.C.\, over the course of eight days. Participants include Team Great Britain\, Team USA\, Team Brazil\, Team New Zealand\, the Women’s Canadian Team\, and the Men’s Canadian Team. The race will be featured by Youtuber DownieLive and documented by Emmy award-winning cinematographer Adam Miller. \nWIRTH Hats was inspired by Jakob Wirth\, who had a vision of creating a hat company however sadly passed away by suicide in 2014 before he could achieve his dream. Jakob envisioned something recognizable; something stylish; something people would love to wear. For him\, hats weren’t just an accessory\, they were the perfect addition to an outfit and a central part of what could make someone feel unique. In 2018\, WIRTH Hats was founded by Ben Miller as a tribute to his dear friend Jakob and other loved and lost friends. \nA “hug for your head\,” each hat is made in Vancouver and serves as an everyday reminder that mental health is a priority and can affect anyone. To that end\, the company applies profits from hat sales and event hosting towards free online counselling for people in need. To date\, WIRTH Hats has sponsored over 6\,000 counselling sessions — and has set its sights on reaching 10\,000 sessions sponsored through the Quad Tandem World Championships.

SUMMARY:Tall Tales: The Quest Is Up To You!
DESCRIPTION:The Improv Centre (TIC) on Granville Island is pleased to announce its family-friendly summer show\, Tall Tales: The Quest Is Up To You!\, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm from June 30 to August 19\, with a special opening night on Thursday\, June 29 at 7:30pm and an additional Canada Day long weekend performance on Sunday\, July 2 at 7:30pm. \nTickets start at $26.50 and are available online at www.theimprovcentre.ca or in person at the TIC Box Office (1502 Duranleau Street). Tickets for opening night (June 29) will be priced at $15. \nJoin our hero on a fantastical journey where the audience is the author. Inspired by fantasy fan favourites like The Princess Bride\, Labyrinth and Lord of the Rings\, Tall Tales: The Quest Is Up To You! will whisk audiences off to a faraway land where laughs and larks abound. What happens along the way? It’s up to YOU! \nTIC ensemble member and creator of Tall Tales: The Quest Is Up To You!\, Mary Saunders\, says “There’s something very appealing about a classic story arc to me\, and fantasy tales are a really fun\, limitless way to explore that. I wanted the format to reflect some predictable and nostalgic elements of storytelling while still being unpredictable in nature as well as rich and diverse in content. It has been exciting figuring out how to create a form that can both reflect those fantasy storytelling elements while being fresh each time. I’m looking forward to our ensemble getting the time and space allowed by long form to explore character arcs more extensively and dive into the richness of the world we build based on unique suggestions from our audience.” \nFor more information on The Improv Centre\, please visit www.theimprovcentre.ca

SUMMARY:Our Journey Continues: 100 Years After the Chinese Immigration Act
DESCRIPTION:On June 29th\, the Chinatown Storytelling Centre will open “Our Journey Continues: 100 Years After the Chinese Immigration Act”\, a new special exhibit dedicated to honouring the multigenerational families who pursued their dreams and turned grievances into success. \nThe exhibit shares the lesser-known stories of families with ancestors who lived through the period of exclusion (1923-1947) and the living descendants making their mark in diverse professions. In selecting the stories\, the CSC spotlights ordinary people who are making an important impact in our community today\, including teachers\, doctors\, athletes\, artists\, and community organizers. The majority of the families have a connection to Vancouver’s Chinatown\, the vibrant intersection point of their extraordinary stories reflecting diverse occupations and backgrounds.
