SUMMARY:The Polygon Gallery: Tania Willard: Photolithics
DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents Tania Willard: Photolithics from March 7–May 24\, 2026. The exhibition is Willard’s first since winning the 2025 Sobey Art Award — Canada’s biggest contemporary art prize — and is her largest solo show to date. Photolithics\, a portmanteau of ancient words for “light” and “stone\,” highlights Willard’s evolving photographic practice\, in which the sun and the land play a vital role beyond the surveillance or spectacle of nature. For The Polygon\, she devises a distinctive treatment for the gallery’s windows based on her research into Salish basketry. Passing through patterns of cedar root\, the sun’s rays cast a warm protective glow\, or “safelight\,” on all the works in the gallery and the people coming to witness. Other works in the 10-year survey include “Only Available Light” (2016)\, which is being presented inside a purpose-built c7ískten̓ (kekuli or underground pit house)\, “Anthro(a)pologizing” (2018)\, “Vestige” (2022)\, and more. \nAdmission to The Polygon Gallery is by donation\, courtesy of BMO Financial Group.

But beyond the headlines\, Chinatown is also a place where real people live\, work and play and where history isn’t confined to a museum. Chinatown has been a refuge\, and the community has consistently pushed back against racist policies and even outright violence. \nToday\, it faces drug use and homelessness\, development and displacement – and the fear of being forgotten. \nJoin us for an honest conversation about the challenges Chinatown faces today and the future we can shape together. \nA moderated conversation with Sophie Lui\, Andy Yan\, Doris Chow\, and Henry Tsang to follow.

DESCRIPTION:Esteemed novelist Joseph Boyden\, acclaimed film director Michelle Latimer and former University of Saskatchewan professor Carrie Bourassa have all made front-page news in recent years for the same reason: each is alleged to have been a “pretendian.” \nThe term “pretendian” has come to refer to someone who claims distant Indigenous heritage that doesn’t stand up to deeper scrutiny. But why would someone fake an Indigenous identity? \nThat question is the premise of The Pretendians (2022)\, a documentary from The Passionate Eye and the latest film featuring Anishinaabe author and playwright Drew Hayden Taylor. The documentary follows his cross-Canada journey\, revealing what really lies behind this explosive issue. \nRating: PG / Runtime: 44 mins\nPresented in partnership with CBC Gem.\n— \nAfter the film\, join Cee Peal\, the 2026 VPL Storyteller in Residence for a discussion around Pretendianism and the harm and division that it creates in Indigenous communities. \n— \nCee Peal is a theatre artist from the Nisga’a First Nation of Northern B.C. now working in Vancouver on the traditional\, unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-waututh)\, and sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) peoples. He brings to the library his experience in storytelling\, theatre\, and image making\, drawing from his experience working as an actor\, director\, writer\, dancer\, and producer on various productions.
