SUMMARY:The Effect
DESCRIPTION:Is it love or just chemical? A dark\, razor-sharp thriller by Emmy-winning writer of Succession\, Lucy Prebble. The Effect dives into the chemical nature of love through the lens of a clinical drug trial. Connie and Tristan enter a study for a new dopamine-regulating antidepressant. They fall in love. Or do they? As dosages rise\, desire and obsession intensify\, and the boundary between genuine emotion and altered chemistry begins to blur. This provocative and timely co-production between Rumble Theatre and ITSAZOO Productions asks: If you can’t trust your heart and you can’t trust your mind—what’s left? \nRumble and ITSAZOO Productions unite for a thrilling production of Lucy Prebble’s The Effect\, from November 7 to 22\, 2025\, at Progress Lab (1422 William Street) in Vancouver. This provocative\, intimate thriller drops audiences inside a clinical trial where two volunteers test a dopamine-regulating drug under observation; as doses rise and attraction intensifies\, the line between authentic feeling and chemical manipulation blurs. \nTickets from $25 are available at rumble.org.

SUMMARY:Faye's Room
DESCRIPTION:Faye’s Room is the story of Faye Murphy\, an autistic lesbian who works at a queer cafe… and happens to have the power to summon and hide in a magical sensory room at will. When she becomes trapped in this room with her least favourite co-worker\, son of the founder and token heterosexual Chase McLure\, an unlikely bond forms\, and the two find themselves with a bit more in common than they had thought. \n“Faye’s Room marks a long list of firsts for us\,” says Co-Artistic Director\, Adam Grant Warren. “It’s our first play as Glitch Theatre\, and the first mainstage production we’ve put up since the pandemic. It’s Alex’s first produced work\, and the first time we’ve backed a D/disability-identified playwright with a team of a majority of neurodiverse directors\, designers\, and cast. That kind of representation – artists with lived experience of D/disability leading from multiple key positions and embedding access practice in the creative process – that’s the heart of Glitch Theatre. And Faye’s Room felt like the perfect opportunity to really embody that value right out of the gate.” \nFaye’s Room is a moving exploration of neurodivergent solidarity\, intergenerational bonds\, and internalized ableism. \nAbout Glitch Theatre: \nGlitch Theatre\, formerly known as Realwheels Theatre\, is thrilled to share its evolution with audiences and the national theatre community. Embracing a name that captures the moment of transformation\, Glitch Theatre is committed to creating works that challenge expectation\, spark innovation\, and invite new perspectives. \n

SUMMARY:Between Breaths | Firehall Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:The Firehall Arts Centre is proud to present the Western Canadian premiere of Between Breaths from Wednesday\, November 12 to Sunday\, November 23\, 2025. \nInspired by a true story\, Between Breaths is a profound play that sails through the extraordinary life of Dr. Jon Lien – known to many as “The Whale Man” – who devoted his career to saving whales trapped in fishing nets off the coast of Newfoundland. Over the years\, he rescued more than 500 whales\, bridging the divide between science and the local fishing community with empathy and respect. But as the play traces Dr. Lien’s legacy\, it also reveals his most personal struggle: a battle with dementia that slowly threatened the very core of his identity. \nSet to a hauntingly beautiful live score by celebrated Newfoundland indie folk trio The Once\, Between Breaths is a powerful meditation on memory\, loss\, and the deep connections that endure even as everything else fades. It is a play about hope\, endings\, and the human spirit’s quiet resistance against disintegration.

SUMMARY:Vitality: Iconic Images\, Hidden Stories
DESCRIPTION:Step into the streets of Vancouver’s Chinatown through the lens of Fred Herzog. A new exhibit reopening the Chinatown Storytelling Center\, Vitality brings together a striking selection of Herzog’s photographs\, capturing daily life in Chinatown\, Strathcona\, and along historic Hastings St. from the 1950s to 1970s. SUMMARY:The Polygon Gallery: Lee Miller: A Photographer at Work (1932–1945)
DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents the West Coast premiere of Lee Miller: A Photographer at Work (1932–1945) from Nov. 7\, 2025–Feb. 1\, 2026. This survey exhibition showcases more than 100 images taken during the renowned American photographer’s most intense and productive period: from her time as a highly sought-after studio portraitist\, to a commercial photographer for cosmetics\, then her time as the World War II correspondent for the British edition of Vogue. The collection of images reveal the behind-the-scenes dynamics of an artist managing a photography career amid the myriad challenges facing professional women at the time. Though Miller was previously best known for her collaboration with Man Ray and her close ties to the 1920s Surrealist movement\, the exhibition offers a richly layered\, complex portrait of this important artist and celebrated photojournalist. Lee Miller: A Photographer at Work (1932–1945) was organised in collaboration with the Lee Miller Archives (England)\, and was previously presented during Les Rencontres d’Arles (France) and at The Image Centre (Toronto). \nContent note: The exhibition features war photography\, including images Miller took of the liberation of the Dachau and Buchenwald concentration camps. \nAdmission to The Polygon Gallery is by donation\, courtesy of BMO Financial Group.

SUMMARY:East Van Panto: West Van Story
DESCRIPTION:A West Van crew. An East Van gang. One wild holiday romance in the middle of a dance battle and a housing crisis. It’s East Van Panto: West Van Story – where love gets weird and the rent’s still too darn high! \n\n\n\n\nWhen a freak atmospheric tsunami strands West Van influencer Holly\, and her curling crew The Hurry Hards\, deep in the wilds of East Van\, she’s ready for disaster — but not the romantic kind. Enter Joes: charming\, striking\, and a proud member of The East Van Pets… their sworn enemies!\n\n\n\n\nAs Holly battles the expectations of her West Van mega-developer motherfather\, Boberta Rainy\, she finds herself caught between two cities\, two families\, and one seriously unexpected romance. Will she follow her heart — and Joes — into a new world of love\, dance battles\, and civic resistance? Or will Boberta’s towers and renovictions crush everything in their path? \nThis holiday season\, come watch Holly and Joes try to Second-Narrows-bridge their differences and sweep each other off their feet. Love\, laughter\, and low-income housing — now that’s a triple takeout! \nTheatre Replacement’s East Van Panto is back for its thirteenth (!) year — and this time\, we’re switching it up. Say goodbye to the classic fairy tale and hello to a Romeo-and-Juliet-inspired romp like only East Van can deliver! \nEast Van Panto: West Van Story brings together a mix of new and familiar faces: Playwright Marcus Youssef (Wizard of Oz\, Pinocchio) teams up with newcomer Pedro Chamale\, and making her Panto debut is Director Chelsea Haberlin. And of course\, no East Van Panto would be complete without our beloved Composer extraordinaire Veda Hille. \nGet ready for another year of East Van’s wackiest\, most joyfully subversive all-ages tradition!

SUMMARY:Thomas Anfield: Sock Monkey Pop Up Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver-based artist Thomas Anfield has found a perfect mix of tragicomedy\, playfulness\, and human truth in a subject he’s painted for over twenty years: the beloved Sock Monkey. In his latest exhibition\, Sock Monkey Scenarios\, Anfield explores the labyrinthine and tangled conditions of being human through these iconic\, anthropomorphic figures. \nThe paintings invite viewers into carefully choreographed scenes where Sock Monkeys pose singly or in groups\, spinning\, slumping\, or standing nobly as if thinking great thoughts. Sometimes they appear joyful and lighthearted; other times\, grotesque or melancholic. Their gestures and relationships mirror our own\, evoking both laughter and reflection. \nA contemporary figurative painter and performance artist\, Anfield has exhibited internationally across North America\, Europe\, Russia\, and\nAfrica at venues including The National Gallery of Senegal\, and Salon de Plastica Mexicana. He was the co-creator of the company Butoh-A-GO-GO\, who were invited by the Moscow Ballet to perform on three different occasions. They were also awarded a full production residency\nat Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity\, creating work which then premiered at the Vancouver International Dance Festival. His paintings\nhave been featured in Modern Painters\, Elle\, Maclean’s\, Vancouver Magazine\, and Preview Magazine. Anfield is a Canada Council\, Inter-\nArts grant recipient and a Dance grant recipient.

SUMMARY:Burnout Paradise
DESCRIPTION:The Cultch presents: Burnout Paradise — Equal parts celebration\, chaos\, and cardio. \nMelbourne’s inventive theatre collective Pony Cam takes the stage in the most unconventional way. Four performers mount four treadmills. As they sprint\, sweat\, and juggle life’s endless to-do lists\, they tackle an escalating series of everyday tasks—cooking pasta\, brushing teeth\, quoting Shakespeare\, even filling out a grant application—all while running in place. \nThe result is both a hilariously unpredictable night of fun and an unravelling realization that the chaos of modern life was not designed for us. \nPony Cam takes the daily grind and turns it into a wildly entertaining ride. You’ll laugh\, you’ll cheer\, and you might even join in. \n★★★★★ \n“It’s sheer bedlam in the most magnificent way” —Time Out \nFor more information and tickets\, thecultch.com/event/burnout-paradise
