SUMMARY:Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson – Apt. 2B
DESCRIPTION:Unlike any other Sherlock Holmes play\, Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson – Apt. 2B follows the iconic duo as they stumble through post-pandemic life\, solving crimes with chaotic brilliance. This feminist take is a must-see for fans of Sherlock Holmes\, mystery lovers\, and anyone looking for a fun night out with friends or family this fall. \n“Last season\, audiences adored Kate Hamill’s writing in our hilarious production of Pride & Prejudice and we are excited to present another of her adaptations that blends sharp wit\, emotional truth\, and a new look at these beloved characters. It’s an ideal way to launch what promises to be a season full of incredible stories\,” said Barbara Tomasic\, Gateway Theatre Executive Artistic Director. “I love how madcap\, fast-paced and funny the show is. With a cast of four tackling more than eight roles\, it’s going to be a bloody entertaining start to our season.

SUMMARY:Vitality: Iconic Images\, Hidden Stories
DESCRIPTION:Step into the streets of Vancouver’s Chinatown through the lens of Fred Herzog. A new exhibit reopening the Chinatown Storytelling Center\, Vitality brings together a striking selection of Herzog’s photographs\, capturing daily life in Chinatown\, Strathcona\, and along historic Hastings St. from the 1950s to 1970s. By capturing the vitality\, creativity\, and resilience of the community during its heyday\, this exhibition serves as a powerful reminder of what these neighbourhoods once were—and what they can become again. \nVitality\, the companion publication to the exhibition\, is a striking\, full-colour book featuring Fred Herzog’s iconic photographs of Chinatown and its surrounding neighbourhoods from the 1950s\, ’60s\, and ’70s is available for purchase at Foo Hung Curios.

SUMMARY:Vacant Lot
DESCRIPTION:The Firehall Arts Centre is pleased to launch its 2025-2026 season with dance/theatre production Vacant Lot by Nelson-based choreographer\, director\, and SAG Award-winning actor Hiromoto Ida from Wednesday\, October 22 to Saturday\, October 25\, 2025. \nBased on the Japanese play “SARACHI”\, by contemporary Japanese theatre artist Shogo Ota\, a long-married couple visit the vacant lot where their house once stood. They innocently share memories of their life together\, of the house\, and of their kids. Soon after\, they realize how short this life is\, and that our existence in the universe is so fragile. \nLindsay Clague and Hiromoto Ida (Homecoming 2020; Shōgun) embody the married couple\, storytelling through movement\, dialogue\, and at times\, stillness. This work balances on the edge between spoken theatre and dance theatre\, exploring elements of both\, revealing the loneliness of human existence and our longing to connect to each other and to the universe. \nWhile the overarching themes are existential\, Vacant Lot humorously celebrates the ordinary\, undocumented moments in everyday life. \n

SUMMARY:Vancouver Writers Fest: Visions of Chinatown With Dona Seto and Carol Lee
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver’s Chinatown is a vibrant cultural hub\, and these two locally published titles capture both its striking visual ambience\, which draws countless photographers and visitors to its streets\, and the rich and diverse histories contained within. Donna Seto’s gorgeous illustrations of the neighbourhood’s historical buildings are collected in Chinatown Vancouver\, alongside interviews with community members and information about these cultural sites. Carol Lee\, founder of the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation\, joins us with Vitality\, pairing stunning photographs of Chinatown in the ‘50s\, ’60s\, and ’70s with interviews and historical insights gathered by the Chinatown Storytelling Centre. This event will be a feast for the eyes\, while celebrating the resilience and contributions of Chinatown’s communities. Moderated by Anna Ling Kaye. \nPresented in partnership with Chinatown Storytelling Centre.

SUMMARY:DanceHouse presents Daniel Léveillé’s Amour\, acide et noix (Love\, Acid and Nuts)
DESCRIPTION:DanceHouse presents Daniel Léveillé’s masterwork\, Amour\, acide et noix (Love\, Acid and Nuts)\, on stage October 24 and 25\, 2025 at 8pm at the Vancouver Playhouse. \nThis emotionally raw\, full-length piece features four dancers\, performing in the nude\, who use the mechanics of their arms\, legs\, torsos\, and skulls to plumb the very nature of the human condition. Performed to a stirring musical score of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons\, pop music\, and birdsong\, the dancers move through a series of spellbinding entanglements. As the piece progresses\, the shock of nudity disappears\, helped along by a lick of irreverent humour that runs throughout the work. \nWinner of the Grand Prix de la danse de Montréal (2017)\, Amour\, acide et noix (Love\, Acid and Nuts) continues to resonate globally. \nDanceHouse offers a pre-show talk at 7:15pm each evening\, as well as a post-show reception following Friday’s performance in the Playhouse Salon.
