SUMMARY:The Polygon Gallery: Star Witnesses
DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents Star Witnesses\, a group exhibition by Monika Szewczyk that assembles works by a constellation of renowned artists whose insightful observations of the cosmos bring new understandings of exploratory and migratory movements on Planet Earth. The title gestures toward each artist’s precise vision\, honed at the technical limits of photography\, and hints at how their work can turn viewers into powerful witnesses in turn. The found and newly produced images take inspiration from the skies while giving substance to vital\, human histories: one woman’s survival in an internment camp; one man’s narrow escape from a white mob; underexposed connections between a war in the Middle East and peace in a mid-sized German town; an artist’s moment of grace on top a moonlit mountain\, far from home. Each work offers the image of the cosmos as material evidence for a distinctive perspective\, worldview\, or imaginary — together\, they attest to the fact that there is no universal way of gazing at the universe. The exhibition features Daniel Boyd\, Vija Celmins\, David Horvitz\, Bouchra Khalili\, Judy Radul\, Thomas Ruff\, Urban Subjects (Sabine Bitter\, Jeff Derksen\, and Helmut Weber)\, Carrie Mae Weems\, and Paul Wong. \nAdmission to The Polygon Gallery is by donation\, courtesy of BMO Financial Group.

SUMMARY:GOD THE DAUGHTER/The Vancouver Fringe Festival
DESCRIPTION:Who’s got time to save mankind? Not GOD THE DAUGHTER; she’s too busy saving herself from the Catholic Church and a world view where girls can only dream of having the top job! \nThis mostly true\, autobiographical tale follows our hero/heroine from being ‘The Second Coming’ to exploring the ins and outs of life as a nun to losing her faith. Making sense of this religion is no easy task! But all is not lost … because as a Catholic in training\, you learn a lot and as it turns out\, it’s not ALL negative. Expect miracles\, laughter\, and just enough accordion to make you glad you came. \n

SUMMARY:A Doll's House
DESCRIPTION:A seemingly perfect life unravels as Nora\, a charming wife and mother\, grapples with a shocking secret. Hidden debts and societal expectations force her to confront a harsh truth—she’s been living in a carefully crafted dollhouse\, yearning for freedom. In a daring move that shakes the very foundation of her world\, Nora makes a choice that will change everything. \nUpon its debut in 1879\, Ibsen’s play quickly generated both acclaim and controversy as one of the first dramatic works to meaningfully address several taboo subjects. Nearly 150 years later\, acclaimed playwright Amy Herzog brings relevance to a story that astonished audiences and brought forth a new era of theatre with a thrilling and compact contemporary adaptation.

SUMMARY:Vitality: Iconic Images\, Hidden Stories
DESCRIPTION:Step into the streets of Vancouver’s Chinatown through the lens of Fred Herzog. A new exhibit reopening the Chinatown Storytelling Center\, Vitality brings together a striking selection of Herzog’s photographs\, capturing daily life in Chinatown\, Strathcona\, and along historic Hastings St. from the 1950s to 1970s. Known for his masterful use of Kodachrome colour\, Herzog documented the heyday of a neighbourhood in transformation — family-run shops\, vibrant street scenes\, and quiet moments of resilience and joy. \nEach photograph is paired with personal and historical narratives uncovered by the Chinatown Storytelling Centre\, adding new layers of meaning to Herzog’s iconic images. Scan QR codes throughout the exhibition to hear firsthand reflections that bring these moments to life. \nBlending photography with storytelling\, Vitality uncovers the hidden stories behind Herzog’s iconic images\, offering a richer\, more nuanced view of these historic neighbourhoods. By capturing the vitality\, creativity\, and resilience of the community during its heyday\, this exhibition serves as a powerful reminder of what these neighbourhoods once were—and what they can become again. \nVitality\, the companion publication to the exhibition\, is a striking\, full-colour book featuring Fred Herzog’s iconic photographs of Chinatown and its surrounding neighbourhoods from the 1950s\, ’60s\, and ’70s is available for purchase at Foo Hung Curios.

SUMMARY:The Queen In Me
DESCRIPTION:re:Naissance presents The Queen In Me in Vancouver for its final performances —and hometown debut— Sept. 12-13 at SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts. Tickets on sale now! \nAfter selling out its world premiere along with Canadian Opera Company in June 2022\, Nightwood Theatre\, Amplified Opera and Theatre Gargantua are thrilled to be touring The Queen In Me by interdisciplinary artist Teiya Kasahara 笠原貞野 (they/he)\, accompanied by pianist David Eliakis (he/him). Combining comedy\, drama\, and opera\, this electrifying show explores the many ways that race\, gender\, and sexuality are policed in the opera industry. Through the lens of The Magic Flute’s iconic Queen of the Night\, the show reclaims space for the multitudes of women\, trans\, and non-binary individuals excluded from the stage\, daring to imagine bold new possibilities for the future of the art form and beyond. \nThis all-ages event features a range of dramatic arias from some of the world’s most well-loved operas: Puccini’s La Bohème\, Madama Butterfly\, Turandot\, and Manon Lescaut; Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor; Verdi’s Macbeth and Rigoletto; R. Strauss’ Salome; and Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

SUMMARY:Long Table Dinner with Nero Tondo at the Sharing Farm
DESCRIPTION:The Sharing Farm is thrilled to partner with Chefs Devon Latte and Lucas Johnston for its final long table dinner of the season on September 14th. Guests will enjoy a five-course vegetarian feast celebrating the peak of the harvest\, brought to life with Devon and Lucas’ playful flavours and hyper-local ingredients. The evening begins at 6 PM with a guided farm tour\, followed by dinner at 6:30 PM. \nABOUT THE SHARING FARM \nThe Sharing Farm is a nonprofit community farm on unceded Musqueam territory in Terra Nova Park\, Richmond\, BC. Each year\, it donates over 20\,000 pounds of fresh produce to local food security programs—including the Richmond Food Bank\, the Musqueam Nation’s free farmers market\, and faith-based food initiatives\, reaching up to 2\,200 people weekly. The farm also runs a CSA program\, hosts Richmond’s annual Garlic Festival\, and operates a seasonal farmstand. \nA vibrant community hub\, the Sharing Farm offers events\, workshops\, and volunteer opportunities that bring people together to connect with the land\, sustainable agriculture\, and each other. In 2024 alone\, it engaged more than 9\,000 people through its programs and gatherings. \nABOUT DEVON AND LUCAS \nChefs Lucas Johnston and Devon Latté met at the Acorn restaurant in 2018\, instantly diving into and falling in love with the local concept. They ran the restaurant together for five years and along with the best staff in Vancouver\, collected a Michelin recommendation along with countless other accolades. They’ve been cooking together ever since and don’t plan on stopping! \nTheir food is ingredient-forward\, relying on strict hyper-locality and seasonal organic vegetables to drive their menus along with sustainably sourced seafood. You’ll also find many wild Pacific Northwest ingredients foraged and preserved by the two chefs throughout the year. Expect unique\, punchy and fun flavours! The duo opened Nero Tondo Restaurant in February 2025\, displaying an elevated yet fun approach on local cuisine.

SUMMARY:Sound Like A Sailor: Book Talk with Bruce Macdonald
DESCRIPTION:Join celebrated author\, sailor\, and artist R. Bruce Macdonald for an engaging evening exploring the colourful world of nautical language. In his latest book\, Sound Like A Sailor – The Book of Nautical Expressions\, Macdonald dives into the fascinating history behind the expressions we use every day—many of which have their roots at sea. \nDiscover how minding your p’s and q’s originates in how bartenders kept track of pints and quarts on sailors’ tabs\, how “going berserk” calls up images of shirtless Vikings\, and how the word “footloose” originally referred to an untethered sail flapping around like Kevin Bacon’s legs. Macdonald brings these phrases to life with captivating tales from the high seas and the rich tapestry of maritime history. \nMacdonald is the author of four acclaimed books\, over 200 published articles\, and a skilled artist whose works are held in collections across North America. Whether you’re a sailor\, history buff\, or simply love a good story\, this event promises insight\, laughter\, and a deeper appreciation for the language that has sailed through centuries. \nDon’t miss your chance to meet the author and get your copy signed!
